I live in Canada. Actually I live in Quebec and here we are supposed to be functional (if not fluent) in both French and English.
So I speak my native language, which is Brazilian Portuguese, French and English.
Here we also have that kind of problem - people immigrating from other countries and who aren't able to speak neither French nor English, which is a very bad thing for them, since they tend to become "ghettoized" if you know what I mean.
Hi there, I wanted your permission to use the video in my EFL website. Because I want my students to focus on the first interview only, would that be ok if I posted only that part? I will not change anything there.
the woman who disagrees well she sure has disagreed for many things in her life....you man really thanks for whatever you were talking there. Respect and bear in mind who made you. Thanks
I can speak Spanish (my mother tongue), English and French (although i have to improve my french writting), and I am learning some arabic now ;)
On the other hand, if you go to live to a foreign country, you have to learn the language of the country. It doesn't care if you go to te US or Spain or wherever. It was your choice to go, now it's your duty to get adapted.
0:55 not true... at least not in most cases. The people who founded most of America were English, or had already spoken English... It's been a while since I've studied this topic, but I do know that when they came here, they made everyone else learn the English language.
@22Cat22 I agree but when she says "our ancestors" she is probably thinking like I do: my 4 grandparents arrived on Ellis Island as teens in 1914 and 1917. These are my "ancestors". The pilgrims are not really my ancestors. But it is certainly true that she is not open like her future son-in-law is.
Even if it's not mandatory, it's kind of rude to come to a country and not intend to learn the language that is spoken by most. I'm moving to Japan soon and even though most people there know at least some English, I'm doing my best to learn Japanese.
Like I said, it's quite rude to expect others to adjust a situation around you simply because you didn't bother to learn their language.
@22Cat22 "Most people" That's based on where you live at..I if lived in chinatown then would i speak englis?..doubt it. but yet it is still in the US. If lived in little havana...the list could go on and on...Rude is a personal issue not a language issue. In this country, the US English is used more however Spanish is second than any other language, so by most could be either or...Good Luck with Japanese!
The first guy is pretty smart but the first women in this video I think is an idiot. She thinks that only people who come to America learn English but in fact in many other countries kids learn English as a foreign language in their schools.
"If you live in this country you should speak English???" Tell that to an old woman living in the heart of Navajo Nation territory. Talk about "arrogant".
@BaekYong313 i don't know why the woman is disagree about the opinion of the man, he is right, the NORTH americans should learn others languages, not only the english, that is all what the man said.
all people should learn Spanish and English, the rest of language must disapear, sorry
