Andy, does this fuzz have annoying oscillation when a wah is placed before it? I can't decide whether to buy this MJM London II or the MXR Classic 108 fuzz.
@The1970sInfatuate - That is entirely dependent on the wah. The fuzz pedal doesn't have anything to do with it. Many newer wahs have what's called "fuzz friendly circuitry"...google the Foxrox Wah Retrofit for more info. Hope that helps. Thanks!
@whenmonsterswalk IMO, any fuzz pedal sounds best in front of something slightly distorted or overdriven :p
For vintage tones, check out the london fuzz or the london fuzz II. I bought the germanium one, liked it so much that I decided to try the other one too xD they're both still a bit different in sound as you'll hear. Second, the silicon fuzz II is a bit easier in use, since it doesnt require a seperate power source, is less temperature dependant. the II's got more high end, not in a bad way
I think the MJM Foxey Fuzz is better for White Stripes sounding stuff, and that the Red London Fuzz is better for that early Hendrix sounds. Think the "Are You Experienced" album with that pedal. I'm getting both. :)
i do agree , fuzz pedals and fender amps are not friends, i have a BOYC fuzz , and plugged it to a Twin reverb ...not a good idea !!! i am able to get a good crunch as a booster but the fuzz that is coming out is way too trebly , but i also noticed that if you hook cab the fender to a 4x12 speaker cab , it will overdrive fuzz more .
The difference is that there are vacuum tubes in the preamp and amp circuitry. This is older technology (versus solid state), but provides for far superior tone. Everybody who's anybody plays a tube amp (and anybody who has good tone). Any good or famous amp is a tube amp (with the exception of the JC-120). However, tube amps are usually 4 to 5 times the cost of "comparable" solid state amps. But it is well worth the money.
i have one of these new london fuzzes from mjm, and they sound awesome, very thick and harmonically rich, and they sound best through a tube amp right on the brink of overdrive, sweet stuff
That's what I was thinking too. But then I realized that it's part of the charm of these videos. It's fun to try and name the riffs. Plus most of the time people leave comments saying what they are anyway.
i disagree. big muff is FAR too distorted-its a distortion pedal! this one really emulates the fuzz of the 60's. i'll admit though, i use a russian big muff reissue for fuzz :/
i got the London(germanium) gonna get the London II just because, the mjm fuzzface clones not only covers alot of hendrix tones but in the right amp-guitar-pickups,.....his fuzz pedals are truly great.make your guitar feel more alive than any overdrive pedal.with a strat or tele, woah!!!!!
But made differently, in a more modernized way. . . If you listen to this, than the Hendrix, this sounds much more like Silicon-era Hendrix. The Hendrix pedal is much looser and brighter. . . It still sounds pretty damn cool, but this one sounds more like Hendrix
Get either the Dunlop Fuzz Face (If you can find an original Arbiter Fuzz Face, you'll be real lucky, 'cause that's what he used), or get the MXR Classic 108 Silicon Fuzz (It's pretty much the same as the Fuzz Face, but in a pedalboard-friendly box, with a buffer switch to limit oscillation). But I honestly think any silicon fuzz pedal will do, especially something with a BC-108 transistor.
This is an exact replica of a late 60's early 70's fuzz with silicon transistors. This, a Strat, and a Marshall, and you'll be wailing out Spanish Castles Magic all day. Be warned though, although they sound decent on recordings such as this, silicon fuzzes normally don't cooperate with Fender tube amps very well.
This is a great fuzz, I love smooth fuzz pedals. I have a question for you, I hope you can answer. How come on your channel, on the standard and little big muff, it sounds so grainy, but on say, GearManDude's demo of the muffs, they sound so smooth? Is it the mic, the amp, the settings, the axe? What is a good way to get a smooth sound from a fuzz- especially a muff.
Yeah, it's the mic. It's a cheaper mic into a cheaper audio system, causing MASS compression. But, Muff's sound good into non-Fender amps (like nearly every fuzz). Germanium fuzz pedals are creamy on their own, but to get a creamy Big Muff tone with, say, a Marshall, just twiddle the tone knob until it sounds good to you

I didn't know a silicon Fuzz could sound that GREAT through a Fender amp.. fuzzes into Fenders tend to sound like a bee in a can sometimes.

That's true sometimes! The secret is keeping that tone knob on your guitar back.

idk, i like them both.. i think it will depend on what gear you are using which one sounds the best
bloodgulge 2 years ago
i think either of the two london fuzz'es will get you closer to hendrix than the dunlop jimi hendrix face..
bloodgulge 2 years ago 3
@bloodgulge the germanium is closer imo, i find the silicon, although more reliable, doesn't have the same dark sound.
