2006 was a great year for Latinos, especially for Mexicans. I'm glad the Oscars took notice and got them nominated for Oscars. Sadly none of them won, but it was a great year. I almost reacted the same why as Salma....I'm Mexican American and we never hear that many Latino names at the Academy Awards! We're lucky to hear at least one Latino name at the Oscars each year.
@mattbernabe Actually, Guillermo Navarro (Mexico) won best cinematography for Pan's Labyrith- movie which also won best makeup (Mexicans)! Santaolalla (Argentina) also won for best score!
Everybody talks about how Salma was excited for her friends, but you only mention the obvious: Penélope Cruz, the Three Amigos, etc. What about Will Smith? They worked together in Wild Wild West and she looks excited for him too :) listen to the way she says his name.
El Laberinto del Fauno fue una coproducción entre España y México. Fue la España quién cedió los derechos a México, este pasado año pasó lo mismo con Biutiful. Pero si España hubiera querido el Laberinto hubiera ido por España.
Pan's Labyrinth n Babel were fuuucking amazing movies n really deserve the oscar, n Adriana Barraza was PHENOMENAL on Babel, she really really was meant for the oscar. n im not even Mexican but it makes me angry how all that talent didnt got what it really deserved! soooo not cool
A fantastic year for Best Actress. Mirren was a little underwhelming, but still very good. Penelope was great, Meryl fantastic, Kate amazing! But Judi Dench deserved it. What a performance!
alfonso cuaron's best performance at the oscars...'children of men' (cuaron directed), 'pan's labyrinth' (cuaron was one of the producers), babel (Gael García Bernal starred in the Cuaron hit film 'Y tu mamá también')...pan's labyrinth defeated children of men for cinematography, babel was a best picture nominee...

Ahhh, you dont think that reaction to Cruz's nomination was rehearsed? She obviously knew she would be nominated and decided to make a scene when the name was called. I know it is silly to say that anything is a sure thing with these nominations but there was very little doubt that Cruz would get a nomination
salma is not happy for penelope because she is spanish!! Spain is NOT latinamerica, you know? Really don't understand what you mean about Babel being artsy fartsy crap, it had 4 seperate yet intertwined stories which were all very personal and potent in my opinion. Didn't see what was artsy fartsy about it at all, I loved it. Just because it doesn't hold your hand and tell you what's going on every 5 minutes through dialogue doesn't mean the story is any less present or effective.
Peter O'Toole so richly deserves an Oscar for "Venus"!
What a performance, moving, well-crafted, honest. He is still our LION of the silver screen: a silver-tongued, golden talent of a man. It's CRIMINAL that he didn't win before for "Lion in Winter", "Becket", and "Lawrence of Arabia". O'Toole deserves an award for what he calls "a piece of work", not some token lifetime achievement Oscar. Honor him properly, Academy.
That would be an ultimate cruelty. This time they have no excuse for leaving Scorsese without an Oscar. Not even Clint is much of an excuse, as he won 2 Oscars just 2 years ago, one as director, one as producer, and he has 4 Oscars already.
And it's the first time ever that a Scorsese-directed film wins both the DGA and the WGA. Pretty good sign, don't you think? I really hope his time has come at last!
Well, to be fair to Clint (though thank God Marty finally won), if he had won, it would have been more for the whole Iwo Jima films in general, as a congrats prize for undertaking such a hard project.

Meryl Streep should have won, she did an excellent job in The Devil, though the competition was very strong.
Kate Winslet and Judi Dench also were fantastic in their roles, great actresses both.
Penelope Cruz did the best performance of her career.
And the winner Helen Mirren worked really good too, but I think she was a little overestimated that year, as she won almost everything.

Yeah I root for O'Toole too. But unfortunately I think Forest Whitaker will win.

Let's see if they can overlook Scorsese yet again. Clint Eastwood sux.
