Another reason why Bush should never had the title President in front of his name. I live in Canada and donated to several animal organizations to go and help these poor animals. Animals the government said the people couldn't take with them. Katrina was the best example of a government that didn't care! About the people or their families and families do include pets. I gave what I could and had I been able to go to New Orleans, I would have been there helping. May the souls of the lost RIP!

Dear lovelimyran, you are absolute right, there was a lot of animals abandoned, but I just went for three months to New Orleans and other minor cities where dogs and cats where the most. I Know in some rural Parishes cows, pigs, horses were abandoned but I also know that people with more experience in large animal rescue were there trying to help. I have to say, that I just was a truck driver, animal lover, with zero experience in animal rescue.
RE TO One of my friends adopted a dog that was rescued after Katrina. He is very loved and taken care of. He's such a great, happy dog. They are wonderful people for helping saving him.

I love animals so much and i have to say that some of these animals were left behind because they would not allow animals to accompany their owners to a different location. Very sad and my heart goes out to all of those that lost so much. My heart goes out to the families that lost a pet during this tragic event.

@Armywifegurl It is absolutely fair. Our pets depend on us for everything food, shelter, and companionship and yet some were left locked in houses or chained in back yards. They can not open doors or windows, unchain them selves when waters rise or get their own food. Can you imagine for one minute what they felt, how confused and sad they must of been? Would you leave your child behind in a natural disaster? Pets are like children, we make a commitment to them for the rest of their lives.

You'd love to smash their owners in the face, but they just don't get it. They don't get that animals feel pain like they do, and they never will get that fact. To them, animals are a possession, and if it's a choice between their couch or their dog, they'll take the couch because it cost them more. Breaks my heart, but you just have to face the fact that most people in this world are selfish assholes, then plan accordingly. I know it's cynical, but it's life.
I'm sure those people would bring their babies with them. Dogs have just as much value as a baby and should not be left alone to die . I would rather die then leave my puppies.

after watching all the amazing rescues of animals in Japan by the military and coastguard this makes us look like an embarrassment to animal rights....How are you going to rescue me by helicopter out of a flooded city and tell me I have to leave my dog on the roof to die??? This is truly inexuseable....I rather them put me back on that roof w/ my best friend!!
I do not, even for a minute, believe that homeowners could not put their pets into their vehicle with themselves, and drive everyone to safety. Those acts would have saved maybe 75,000 animals. But, I realize that public buses were and shelters were different circumstances; where unconscionable decisions were made by authorities not save pets.... an act of genocide to shame the authorities and those who choose to cave in to their wishes.
I am hoping that these pictures are by rescuers who eventually went in and rescued as many as they could. I remember seeing footage of people on roofs having to leave their dogs behind when getting picked up by a helicopter.
I hope that the pics are not just hearltess journalist trying to document the damage and pets left behind. I truly believe that a lot of these dogs were rescued. There was a big effort a week after Katrina to focus on pets.
the sadest part is the eutnize when its healthy enough dog. just to intentinally let them die for no reason is sad. i feel so sorry for these dogs, epsically the ones chained or caged in these hard times. imagine being one of them.
I have 16 dogs! yes i said 16, because i can't bear the thought of them being killed. I also live on 6 acres of land and have 5 horses. I would have taken them all had I been able to get there. They are all like children to me and my husband and my kids. I take all I can and feed them all myself but donations are great too.
I cried though the all video I love dog i have 10............At least they got saved by Dogtown................Dogtown Had 345,000,000 people saving dogs!!!!!!God bless those people who saved those dogs in this video
I can't imagine the fear, loneliness, desperation, and confusion felt by those abandoned animals. Does my family love me anymore? Why did they leave? Will they come back? I'm hungry... Such heartbreaking video that left me bawling. Animals are like family. Bless those involved in the rescue efforts-- you are heroes!

I'm sorry but it is unfathomable to think leaving without my dog and cat. They are a part of my family and I would never leave them behind. I do think that many people did not think it was going to be as bad as it was. They thought if they left food and water they would just return in a day or two. I at least hope that is what they were thinking. The same betrayal goes on every day in our animal "shelters" where animals are abandoned by their families to whatever fate awaits them.

Because of the tragedy of Katrina & all the stories of people who tried to save their animals, laws have now changed and people must be allowed to evacuate with their pets. Many animal welfare groups like Noah's Wish, Pasado's Safe Haven, Best Friends and more are prepared to set up shelters for pets or people with before a storm so all can bbe safely evacuated. Many of the pets left behind were not left at the owners' choice. Many were forced to leave pets. Please don't judge. Help educate.
Last summer we were threatened with evacuation due to wild fires around us. The first things prepared were my 3 rescue kitties with their things before even our own personal belongings...
The authorities would have to shoot me dead before I abandoned any animal of mine to die in similar circumstances.
I know that alot of the people living there did not have cars to leave in but I do and no matte what I would not leave my kitties behind. If I knew a hurricane was coming to my area, I would pack up my car, take my cats and leave the area until it was safe to come back.
People didn't just run off and leave Fido they had no choice! I don't see any video or pictures inside those houses the owners could be dead inside the house ever thunk of that? Or perhaps the people thought hmm maybe my life is important and the leeves weren't on their minds! The people that own them feel as baddly as we do about it even more I'd imagine. So stop whinning about it and be thankful of what good there is.

I have read numerous posts about people leaving pets behind.
First of all it was against the law to evacuate a pet to a shelter.
The police seperated many people from their pets at gunpoint.
It has become a lessons learned by the nation and the Humane Society was able to make a law allowing for the evacuation of all pets from future disaster areas anywhere in the U.S.
This is the real truth now.
God Bless and look over those who survived and take care of the ones who didn't.
Yeah the securities told the owners to leave their pets and will come back for their pets,but they didn't come back to security the pets for over a month and caused the pets straving ,but the others are dead of straved and lonely .....Stupid Securities!!! We shouldn't forget our little animal friends, too. Like the hamsters, gerbils, etc. They lost their lives, too.
i hate to say this but they were told to leave 2 weeks before that thing hit they didn't. And futher more didn't have the guts to stay with their pets while they where rescued and taken to savety. I could'nt leave my dog... she'd be petrified. She would need me to comfort her, if i abandoned her then i would'nt be doing my duty as her owner but would be doing an even worse injustice as her friend!! Live or Die... i'd be there every step beside her!!

Animals should be our FIRST priority since they cant help themselves especially ones who have been born into captivity and who are domesticated animals. They are just like young children or the elderly and need to be guided and helped and looked after all of the time regardless of what circumstances may occur. I pray that more people will start loving their animals the way I do and take better care of them and realize the improtance they have and how they teach us all to love unconditionally!

RE TO One of my friends adopted a dog that was rescued after Katrina. He is very loved and taken care of. He's such a great, happy dog. They are wonderful people for helping saving him.

you could not just drive away from your home with a pet in the car. If you where at home your house flooded in minutes. Steets where flooded in seconds Many owners stood on the roofs. Read about what happened .YOU could not leave the area or get back in. .Many people died staying with thier pets. When the boat or bplane came for you theresaid no room for pets . I love animals so much and i have to say that some of these animals were left behind because they would not allow animals to accompany their owners to a different location. Very sad and my heart goes out to all of those that lost so much. My heart goes out to the families that lost a pet during this tragic event.

People left their animals behind WHY???? I dont understand that and they were turned away several other times by people too... TO DIE. This was a disaster who had the right to leave them behind, i could never. IF I GO THEY GO!! I have 4 cats & 3 dogs i'd find a way...i never realized they were left like that!!!! @Armywifegurl It is absolutely fair. Our pets depend on us for everything food, shelter, and companionship and yet some were left locked in houses or chained in back yards. They can not open doors or windows, unchain them selves when waters rise or get their own food. Can you imagine for one minute what they felt, how confused and sad they must of been? Would you leave your child behind in a natural disaster? Pets are like children, we make a commitment to them for the rest of their lives.

I pledge to my pouch Shadow MC ! He eats what I eat, He goes where I go if we have to swim crawl or eat bugs ! We live together and we die together! Everyone of them dogs, their eyes just bleed sorrow and hunger. I feel so so sorry for every living thing that has or will ever feel that ! You'd love to smash their owners in the face, but they just don't get it. They don't get that animals feel pain like they do, and they never will get that fact. To them, animals are a possession, and if it's a choice between their couch or their dog, they'll take the couch because it cost them more. Breaks my heart, but you just have to face the fact that most people in this world are selfish assholes, then plan accordingly. I know it's cynical, but it's life.

after watching all the amazing rescues of animals in Japan by the military and coastguard this makes us look like an embarrassment to animal rights....How are you going to rescue me by helicopter out of a flooded city and tell me I have to leave my dog on the roof to die??? I do not, even for a minute, believe that homeowners could not put their pets into their vehicle with themselves, and drive everyone to safety. Those acts would have saved maybe 75,000 animals. But, I realize that public buses were and shelters were different circumstances; where unconscionable decisions were made by authorities not save pets.... an act of genocide to shame the authorities and those who choose to cave in to their wishes.

I am hoping that these pictures are by rescuers who eventually went in and rescued as many as they could. I remember seeing footage of people on roofs having to leave their dogs behind when getting picked up by a helicopter.
I hope that the pics are not just hearltess journalist trying to document the damage and pets left behind. I truly believe that a lot of these dogs were rescued. There was a big effort a week after Katrina to focus on pets.

I have 16 dogs! yes i said 16, because i can't bear the thought of them being killed. I also live on 6 acres of land and have 5 horses. I would have taken them all had I been able to get there. They are all like children to me and my husband and my kids. I take all I can and feed them all myself but donations are great too.

I can't imagine the fear, loneliness, desperation, and confusion felt by those abandoned animals. Does my family love me anymore? Why did they leave? Will they come back? I'm hungry... Such heartbreaking video that left me bawling. Animals are like family. Bless those involved in the rescue efforts-- you are heroes!

Most were forced at gunpoint to evacuate and leave them behind.
Rex and I survived the hurricane we were lucky to not flood.

I'm sorry but it is unfathomable to think leaving without my dog and cat. They are a part of my family and I would never leave them behind. I do think that many people did not think it was going to be as bad as it was. They thought if they left food and water they would just return in a day or two. I at least hope that is what they were thinking. The same betrayal goes on every day in our animal "shelters" where animals are abandoned by their families to whatever fate awaits them.

sad for me to watch this cuz my 180lb dad kicks and beats my 15 pound dog, and he is tied to a chair allll day longggggggggggg, my dad dragges him by his leash, my dad beats him and says things like "shut up u Piece of shit" "bite me i dare you i will kill you dog"he is lying down and purposly steps on his tail, *accidently kicks him in the face cuz he's in his way(because he is tied to a chair), we all tell him to stop, but he just says "shut up" i hope he dies and buns in hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because of the tragedy of Katrina & all the stories of people who tried to save their animals, laws have now changed and people must be allowed to evacuate with their pets. Many animal welfare groups like Noah's Wish, Pasado's Safe Haven, Best Friends and more are prepared to set up shelters for pets or people with before a storm so all can bbe safely evacuated. Many of the pets left behind were not left at the owners' choice. Many were forced to leave pets. Please don't judge. Help educate.

Last summer we were threatened with evacuation due to wild fires around us. The first things prepared were my 3 rescue kitties with their things before even our own personal belongings...
The authorities would have to shoot me dead before I abandoned any animal of mine to die in similar circumstances.

I know that alot of the people living there did not have cars to leave in but I do and no matte what I would not leave my kitties behind. If I knew a hurricane was coming to my area, I would pack up my car, take my cats and leave the area until it was safe to come back.

I just don't understand what everyone expected these people to do. They had to worry about their "human" family FIRST!!!! This was a situation of life or death..... I doubt they were allowing animals in the relief efforts.... if it comes down to either saving your child or your dog, which would YOU choose???? I'm sure it was heartbreaking for those who had to leave their dogs/cats!!

I have read numerous posts about people leaving pets behind.
First of all it was against the law to evacuate a pet to a shelter.
The police seperated many people from their pets at gunpoint.
It has become a lessons learned by the nation and the Humane Society was able to make a law allowing for the evacuation of all pets from future disaster areas anywhere in the U.S.
This is the real truth now.
God Bless and look over those who survived and take care of the ones who didn't.

Yeah the securities told the owners to leave their pets and will come back for their pets,but they didn't come back to security the pets for over a month and caused the pets straving ,but the others are dead of straved and lonely .....Stupid Securities!!! Animals should be our FIRST priority since they cant help themselves especially ones who have been born into captivity and who are domesticated animals. They are just like young children or the elderly and need to be guided and helped and looked after all of the time regardless of what circumstances may occur. I pray that more people will start loving their animals the way I do and take better care of them and realize the improtance they have and how they teach us all to love unconditionally!

@luvtowin don't forget a lot of owners would have been killed and their pets were left behind stranded. Nobody would leave their pet to die. I would've thought that would be obvious.

What many people outside of Lousiana don't know is the Governor refused to allow pets in rescue shelters.
I know this because I survived Katrina and I didn't leave me pet behind he was a rescue I adopted I have one simple rule I can lose almost everything.
But as long as my dog and I are together we will be fine,
Most owners were forced to leave thie dogs behind due to the NOPd and the LST both refused to alow pets on buses with their families.
That is the real truth about Katrina.
