Blocking these compilations seems counter productive to me. I'm tempted to look up some soundtracks I don't have, to purchase them, after listening to these. Why aren't the marketing think tanks considering that? This is free advertising for them!
Alan Silvestri is just epic because his music, every composition, has epic and strong moments such as the part from Final Battle in this video. Pure awesomeness that causes every human being that listens to it to create some, again, epic pictures in his head. That's why he is one of the best! Actually, the best!
you can really see how his style has changed over the years. Still all of his music is amazing and I agree that he should have been on Pirates (though what we got was still pretty good) Didn't even know he did The Mummy movies. Though I miss his old style from Predator and BTTF. But I can see that that wouldn't work for most movies.
BTTF is MY number 1 personally! Great video though thank you, some themes that I didn't realise he had done. Watched Predator for the first time in years though and thought "this sounds like Silvestri" ...I was right! :-)
I'm sorry, but this a horrible list! I respect your opinion, but I personally would put Back To The Future as number one. I'd definitely add in The Abyss, Predetor, And maybe Forest Gump and Cast Away! And I'd also add in Death Becomes Her, just because I love that theme a lot lol
Hi there, great music selection! I was wondering, maybe you know the name of the theme music used on the GI JOE official trailer, its the same used in a "fan made" trailer of Captain America.
None of these tracks even come close to his composition for the 1986 film "No Mercy" starring Richard Gere and Kim Basinger. That should have been a clear #1.
I like Bill Conti the most myself. He always gives it that little detail wich actually makes the song awsome. Alan Sevestri just became my second best musician.
kinda sad that the mummy and the mummy returns were brendan frasiers best movies...*thinks of stuff like journey to the center of the earth and shivers*
Good call! I totally didn't consider Mousehunt when I made this video because I categorize it under "fun" rather than "epic" but it's one of my absolute favorite pieces by him...
It's a shame that everyone forget about his songs in the movie Contact. I personally think that "Good to Go" was the best piece from him. Along with Pandora's Box in the Tomb Raider movie.
great list, plus i agreed with the 80s pop-synth, it does give it a little less impact but i guess i never really lived in the 80s so i wouldn't know the popularity of the synth =)
good to see back to the future, but i would make sure chuck norris dosen't see this video because it will be the end of the world if u don't put "The Delta Force" as #1 lol
I made this list a while back, the first two would go on if I were to remake.
But Romancing the Stone? Urgh, no. I've said it often enough, Silvestri's 80s style is only epic when given to an orchestra (BTTF), keep the pop-synths out of it.
Even seen it? I've heard way worse scores. A lot of generic stuff nobody remembers, and sounding all the same from movie to movie. The score for Romancing the Stone did stand out.
#10 - was your last chance to make good for not including "The Abyss", #9 - nothing spectacular, #8 - that one surely got lost ending up in Alan Silvestri's epic top ten, #7 - by far not epic enough considering the rest of Alan's epic repertoire, #6 - excellent call considering the fact that the theme is usually neglected, #5 - comment not required (thumbs up), #4 - this one is not lost, #3 - yet again this one is lost too, #2, #1 - no comment. Tastes vary but the lack of "The Abyss" etc.?
What you infer to as annoying will nearly displace A MAGNITUDE OF 80'S FANATICS beyond your imagination. It's a gawd awful pity you see matters that way but after all - it's your world. Quite frankly the best works of the likes of Maurice Jarre, Alan Silvestri, James Horner, Giorgio Moroder, Jack Nitzsche, & others was in the 80's! So instead of confounding matters & making conjectural endless grounds with you - you can take your list & be very proud of it. The 80's is where it all happened!
Well, I like the 80s style when it's applied to an orchestra. Take the BTTF theme - in terms of the chord progression, that's as 80s as it gets. Or yeah, Horner's early stuff like Star Trek II or Krull or Willow has a lot of 80s mannerisms.
What I don't like are the bouncy synths. Matter of personal taste, of course - if you ask me, an orchestra playing the Delta Force theme would sound absolutely awesome, almost as good as BTTF.
Sorry Joe that's A No Go and I'll walk on your list anyday. A person that doesn't account for his scores and themes from films like Predator, Flight Of The Navigator, The Abyss, and Delta Force ............... well I'll I can say is "Mother Call Your Daughter Out!"
Flight of the Navigator is one of the most annoying synthy 80s scores this side of Vangelis, Delta Force isn't much better. Abyss and Predator are 11th and 12th, respectively; I find both a bit overrated.
The theme you put by Back to the Future is from John Williams, not from Alan Silvestri, I know that for 100%. But alan Silvestri is brilliant! Especially number 2! I am a fan of Hans Zimmer!
Don't throw figures like 100% around. Even though he was told by the director to write a "John Williams-esque" theme for BttF, it is definitely SILVESTRI'S composition (just go to the Wikipedia article, any source will back me up). Yes, he is brilliant, there's no better composer for an action-adventure movie IMO.
And Zimmer's in a league of his own (funny there's actually a movie called A League of Their Own that Zimmer scored, how very fitting :)
Back to the future is one classic theme...that's pretty much it. Van Helsing has several good themes and the action music is much more full-blooded and exciting. Just my opinion ^^
Apparently I think this vid title literally means epic as in epic. I thought you meant epic as in silvestris top songs in which you would be smoking crack not to choose the main theme from either cast away or forrest gump.
Finally, somebody who understands my reasons for making this video! You're absolutely right. I picked the biggest, most badassly orchestral Silvestri pieces, not necessarily the best - just the loudest. Obviously Forrest Gump doesn't fit that equation, though its Feather Theme is easily a contender for best Silvestri composition ever.
@MrAnderson234 Create a video and post it, you people know just how to denigrate who posts his own video, you are nobody to criticize and its obviously that everyone has their own preferences so what are you talking about.. However its not my problem, do what u want, all the world can do it so you can too people.. And just to clarify, this isn't a case but don't compared Justin Bieber's music to other musical genres, i dont like him but u can't compared him to Stevie Wonder (example), is stupid
Yes! Beowulf #1 for the epic win! I'd also have to say that 'Beowulf Slays the Beast' and 'What We Need Is a Hero' are incredibly awesome songs from the Beowulf soundtrack.
Hey, if you check out my Top 10 Hans Zimmer video you'll know that I agree with you...but I actually feel that Silvestri's music for The Mummy Returns has more of a "pirate-y" feel to it, more swashbuckle, if you know what I mean? Zimmer's music, while awesome, feels more like it belongs in a modern action movie (or else Gladiator...). It's not until the third score (At World's End) that the PotC music starts picking up a really adventurous swing...
@elunicocalvo Can I wholheartedly disagree with you here? Edward Cullen was the gayest vampire ever! Van Helsing is a good movie in its own right (could have been better), and its score is absolutely amazing!
True, I'd take Van Helsing over Twilight any day of the week. Kate Beckinsale is MUCH better-looking than that irritating Kristen Stewart person...as for Twilight's score, the less said about it, the better.
Richard Roxburgh's campy interpretation of Dracula in Van Helsing is one of those love-it-or-hate-it performances that most people tend to hate. It certainly makes an already-cheesy movie even cheesier, even though I kinda like some of his over-the-top-ness.
"Robot Romp" from Flight of the Navigator? Yeah, I'm not actually such a fan. For me, that one goes up with Romancing the Stone and Delta Force in the Silvestri's oddities collection. Again, I like Silvestri's 80s-ish themes when they're given to an orchestra (like in BttF). I suppose I'm not a fan of synths in general unless they mix nicely with the orchestra and choir like in Beowulf.
But thanks for the comment anyway :) Agreed, a top 10 doesn't come close to showing all AS's highlights.
Predator came 11th (and if I were to redo the list it might replace the Volcano cue), and I've explained my reasons for not including Forrest Gump so friggin' often already, see the description.
add Escaoe from the Wright Flyer from Night at the Museum. Listen to it, u won't be surprised why im asking you to post it. It's on youtube. just type the song name and it'll come up.
Yeah, I know Escape from Wright Flyer, it's a great piece of Alan Silvestri action, but it sounds surprisingly like Pirates of the Caribbean if you ask me. Might have made my top 20, but not the top 10.
This list is akin to saying Spielberg's best movies are Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Terminal over Raiders of the Lost Ark and Schindler's List. Your age is betrayed by the disproportionate weight given to stuff that came out over the past few years. I guess that's only natural.
I think it's because of Silvestri's maturation as a composer, and the increasingly ambitious scope of his scores. There are similar rhythmic patterns and ideas between Van Helsing and Predator, and sure Predator came first and is probably a "better" score. But Predator had piano, snares and a medium orchestra. Van Helsing has massive drums, a chanting choir and a huge, symphonic ensemble, which just makes the music that much more "epic".
hey it's your list, but mummy returns and judge dredd can't compare to predator; i notice your list has a lot of upbeat, "happy" tunes. don't like the scary stuff?
Dredd does have some atmospheric moments, and I do somewhat hate Angel Family. But what do you mean by upbeat and happy? I prefer adventure and choral stuff to straight-action music, and yes I do prefer both MR and JD to Predator for the more mature orchestral sound. Maybe its just the bootleg I own, but there isnt actually that much interesting action music on my Predator album. About ten, maybe fifteen minutes worth out of 60, 70 . Mummy Returns has much more, and Van Helsing is nonstop!
Predator is overrated. Good, yes, but overrated. I prefer Silvestri's more matured action style of the 2000s, as my over-pushing of Van Helsing and Mummy Returns probably proved. Predator has wonderful moments and the main theme closely missed the list, but it's too atmospheric otherwise.
The Abyss suffers from much of the same atmosphere. I do love the hell out of the choir in "Bud on the Ledge," though. In fact, if I redid the video, I might replace the NatM cue with it. But...I'm too lazy!
In my opinion, action music and big, sweeping themes translate far better onto album than suspenseful music, though it all works equally well in the context of the movie. Predator, being a tense, horror-action movie, has some great pounding tracks and a kick-ass main theme, but also some dissonant, synthetic stuff (underscoring the more nervous moments) that doesn't hold my attention as much on a CD.
I'm getting tired of explaining this...It's top 10 most EPIC. NOT BEST 10. Forrest Gump isn't epic, it's beautiful, lovely, what have you. Epic isn't necessarily a synonym for good.
Nice compilation here, you should also check out John Debney. Who, in my opinion, is the most diverse and talented composer in Hollywood right now.
Some of his scores include:
Passion of the Christ, Cutthroat Island, Liar Liar, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Lair, Bruce Almighty, The Jetsons Movie, Seaquest DSV, End of Days, and Sin City
What he's trying to say is James Horner reuses a TON of his work, and "takes inspiration" from other sources and uses it in his music. Thus not a very creative person.
There's a string of notes he's used in Aliens, Enemy at the Gates, Titanic, Apollo 13 and who knows what else.
Horner has made some memorable music but again, not a very creative person.
Yeah, I also forgot to give Jerry Goldsmith his wholly deserved place on there. R.I.P... And Steve Jablonsky, not because of Transformers, but because of Steamboy ;)
Van Helsing is my numero uno Guilty Pleasure OST, not just by Alan, but in the world. Mind you, I haven't listened to every single score in the world, but so far...
Yes, I have heard of Forrest Gump. The Feather Theme is my #1 feelgood music, if you have to know. But call me traditionalist, a solo piano isn't what I qualify as "EPIC"
You can always hear and recognize it's him. The great brand:)

And twilight is the gayest movie ever -.-

Nice choice.
Of course one can't satisfy everybody with a 10 song list.
In my case, I would have been satisfied if I saw "Robot Romp" on the list.
It's another 80s synth track, but it's not annoying, it's uplifting!
Alan Silvestri is a virtuoso.
AYRYZIGER 1 year ago
"Robot Romp" from Flight of the Navigator? Yeah, I'm not actually such a fan. For me, that one goes up with Romancing the Stone and Delta Force in the Silvestri's oddities collection. Again, I like Silvestri's 80s-ish themes when they're given to an orchestra (like in BttF). I suppose I'm not a fan of synths in general unless they mix nicely with the orchestra and choir like in Beowulf.
But thanks for the comment anyway :) Agreed, a top 10 doesn't come close to showing all AS's highlights.

why is predator not on here? or gump? but mostly predator :)
briank1ne 1 year ago
Predator came 11th (and if I were to redo the list it might replace the Volcano cue), and I've explained my reasons for not including Forrest Gump so friggin' often already, see the description.

add Escaoe from the Wright Flyer from Night at the Museum. Listen to it, u won't be surprised why im asking you to post it. It's on youtube. just type the song name and it'll come up.
starwarsworld 1 year ago
Yeah, I know Escape from Wright Flyer, it's a great piece of Alan Silvestri action, but it sounds surprisingly like Pirates of the Caribbean if you ask me. Might have made my top 20, but not the top 10.

Only Beowulf theme that is worth listening. The rest are more like 80s...
Thammasid 2 years ago
How on earth are ANY of these 80s, besides BTTF?
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
You say that like it's a bad thing.
scrumdiddly 2 years ago
It's not. Just not really true, in my ears. Now Delta Force...THAT'S 80s, and awesome to boot!
JoeSnyderwalk 1 year ago
this is definitely not the top ten. more like your top ten.
not my choice at all. except for bttf
Ducaz012 2 years ago
Sure, it's MY top 10. Whose else would it be?
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
why did you not put the delta force theme.. :(
epineprine 2 years ago
Because it's too 80s-synth and annoying. Trust me, if that theme got the Back to the Future awesome adventure orchestration, it would be on here.
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
This list is akin to saying Spielberg's best movies are Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Terminal over Raiders of the Lost Ark and Schindler's List. Your age is betrayed by the disproportionate weight given to stuff that came out over the past few years. I guess that's only natural.
WastedPo 2 years ago
I think it's because of Silvestri's maturation as a composer, and the increasingly ambitious scope of his scores. There are similar rhythmic patterns and ideas between Van Helsing and Predator, and sure Predator came first and is probably a "better" score. But Predator had piano, snares and a medium orchestra. Van Helsing has massive drums, a chanting choir and a huge, symphonic ensemble, which just makes the music that much more "epic".

judge dredd isn't atmospheric? lol
hey it's your list, but mummy returns and judge dredd can't compare to predator; i notice your list has a lot of upbeat, "happy" tunes. don't like the scary stuff?
simpathy4thedevil 2 years ago
Dredd does have some atmospheric moments, and I do somewhat hate Angel Family. But what do you mean by upbeat and happy? I prefer adventure and choral stuff to straight-action music, and yes I do prefer both MR and JD to Predator for the more mature orchestral sound. Maybe its just the bootleg I own, but there isnt actually that much interesting action music on my Predator album. About ten, maybe fifteen minutes worth out of 60, 70 . Mummy Returns has much more, and Van Helsing is nonstop!

Very weak list. where's the abyss and predator soundtrack. they should be number 1
Shenjin00 2 years ago
Predator is overrated. Good, yes, but overrated. I prefer Silvestri's more matured action style of the 2000s, as my over-pushing of Van Helsing and Mummy Returns probably proved. Predator has wonderful moments and the main theme closely missed the list, but it's too atmospheric otherwise.
The Abyss suffers from much of the same atmosphere. I do love the hell out of the choir in "Bud on the Ledge," though. In fact, if I redid the video, I might replace the NatM cue with it. But...I'm too lazy!
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
i dont really see how too atmospheric is a bad thing but fair enough. your list not mine
Shenjin00 2 years ago

JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
Nice compilation here, you should also check out John Debney. Who, in my opinion, is the most diverse and talented composer in Hollywood right now.
Some of his scores include:
Passion of the Christ, Cutthroat Island, Liar Liar, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Lair, Bruce Almighty, The Jetsons Movie, Seaquest DSV, End of Days, and Sin City

and what about Thomas Newman and James Horner? They're also great! :) Ennio Morricone is also fantastic! but Thomas Newman is my favourite one! :) x
CinderellaXXGirlXX 2 years ago
Newman is admittedly a pretty creative guy. Though the same cannot be said about James Horner...
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
Have you heard then the music created for Braveheart or The Peferct Storm? It's all by James Horner and it's perfect. Check it out. x :)
CinderellaXXGirlXX 2 years ago
Meh. Braveheart was perfect in 1916, when it was called "Jupiter", from The Planets by Gustav Holst :p.
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
What he's trying to say is James Horner reuses a TON of his work, and "takes inspiration" from other sources and uses it in his music. Thus not a very creative person.
There's a string of notes he's used in Aliens, Enemy at the Gates, Titanic, Apollo 13 and who knows what else.
Horner has made some memorable music but again, not a very creative person.

Alan Silvestri is an amazing composer. His BTTF, Mummy, and Polar Express scores are definitely some of the best scores in film.
My favorite composers would be John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, Bruce Broughton, Michael Giacchino, and Danny Elfman.
jasonflz 2 years ago
My favorite composers is: John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman and Brad Fiedel
MandelbudetReturns 2 years ago
That sounds like a good list to me :). Although I'm not so familiar with Brad Fiedel - Terminator, right?
To my list I would also add Harry Gregson-Williams, Howard Shore and James Newton Howard.
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
Yes, he composed the music in Terminator 1 and 2.
And Harry, Howard and James in your list are pretty good
MandelbudetReturns 2 years ago
plz don't forget Basil poledouris: He created Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers, Robocop, Hunt for Red October, Free Willy OSTs

Yeah, I also forgot to give Jerry Goldsmith his wholly deserved place on there. R.I.P... And Steve Jablonsky, not because of Transformers, but because of Steamboy ;)
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
I have never watched one of them. Sorry. But I think will hear some his scores soon. I like to hear movie scores which is new to me

You ever herad of Forrest Gump? Alan Silvestri is more then Van Helsing
BehnamLot 2 years ago
Van Helsing is my numero uno Guilty Pleasure OST, not just by Alan, but in the world. Mind you, I haven't listened to every single score in the world, but so far...
Yes, I have heard of Forrest Gump. The Feather Theme is my #1 feelgood music, if you have to know. But call me traditionalist, a solo piano isn't what I qualify as "EPIC"
:) Hope we're understood.
JoeSnyderwalk 2 years ago
Forrest Gump's slightly overrated. The Best Zemeckis-Silvestri collaboration is Back to the Future.
