I have been looking for a source of Musk Strawberries and so glad you made this video. Now, as soon as I have a little land to garden - I'm going to be ordering from you. (happy dance)
Would love to see more videos on how you recommend growing - what do you think of the 'square foot' method for Strawberries?
The square foot method is fine for garden varieties of strawberries. They generally have one or a few crowns so don't need a lot of space. Alpine strawberries need more space than a square foot as do musks. Alpines need more space because they grow by increasing the number of crowns, the more crowns the more production. Musks need more space because each plant is pretty large even with a single crown.
The key to growing ANY strawberry in your zone is to find ways to get them through the hottest part of the year. The easiest way is to grow in containers so they can be moved to more favorable environments. When growing in the ground fast growing plants can be planted that will provide shade during the hottest part of the day. Shade cloth works also. Good luck.
Thank you, Mike. I am raising them from seed under the lamps now, and they grow so slowly. They already have true leaves, but they are tiny little things. How long does it take them to get adult size leaves?
Yes, the white ones will grow in zones 8 and 9. You need to provide some shade during the hottest part of the year. They are afterall cool season plants. If you can grow strawberries in your area you can grow alpines.
