  • 'Why wouldn't I want you to be happy?"

    Because you're not.

  • I had to look up DMSO. Apparently in the novel Ingrid kills her boyfriend using a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide (a solvent) and oleander extract.

  • The mom is wise

  • i love how the cashsier smiled when paul turned around to look at astrid

  • I'm so jealous of her artistic ability! bah, need to start drawing again!

  • Astrid looks cute with short hair.

  • Cannot find a better looking kid he looks terriable. Looks are everything. but he is nice though.

  • Aww loved Paul.

  • 6:30...GOD her facial expressions are perfect!!

  • FINALLY THEY KISSED!

  • "A kid I used to know." Poor little Davey...I wonder what happened to him.

  • at least this time she chose someone her own age :)

  • paul seemed like a great guy.

  • what is the boy's name that she becomes friends with

  • @lbonista paul trout

  • I hate how it skips over her suicidal stoner phase at the one foster home and then her starvation one at the other -.- totally out of order

  • this movie is swum..n it shows so many different stages of Astrid's life...i found out afteri watched the movie there was a book....but ppl usually say the books r better thn the movie.

  • astrids mother is toally right with what she´s sayin about ppl. but she´s just too cruel and callously!

  • This movie is soul capturing. Thanks for such a great post !

  • Why is he so cute!

  • @kayandmak i kno hes not too good lookin but hes not ugly but the way he is an acts is

  • Aw man it skipped the part were she sucks the fat kids dick.

  • @98itachilover does that happen in the book or is this movie missing parts?

  • @lbonista yeah it happen in the book. but they must have thought it was to inappropriate to put in the movie. I dont blame them. I wanted to see if they put it in the movie but they didnt.

  • don't do it again Astrid...do what again?...attach yourself to anyone who shows you the least bit of attention because your lonley

  • @joriefoy Nice analysis :-)

  • i would also love to have a guy who i can draw with *-*

  • Parts of this movie remind me of my childhood, except younger. Great movie. I wish they made more movies about real life people instead of crap like homicidal robots. But it's a good question to think about (brought up in this movie... how do YOU define art?). Sometimes I think the tougher the life, the more you get out of it. It hurts, but if you persevere, eventually you win. Easy lives sound good, but your soul learns nothing, and if your soul really is eternal you're screwed....

  • @lexikalfanfic Beautiful way of looking at emotional pain.

  • i love the comic book store scene and when the cashier smiles. it's a perfect moment.

  • i like it better when she dies her hair brown

  • Ugh her mother reminds me of my father

  • the book is written soooooo well. such nice use of words!

  • loneliness is a human condition, get used to it..i think that's it..in the book.

  • @missKeila1985 You're right, it is :)

  • it's so sad when she says " a kid I used to know"

  • i wish this had subtitles

  • By saying to him he is an artist and not cartoonist she reminds him - there is always to seek for something more then what one has achieved. Cartoons can sell good if done properly, visual art is another story. The best way to become what u want to b is to believe u r already, but don't stay at that stage 4 2 long, cause u might end up in a self admiration the way mother did.

  • @jeenthough Sorry. I went to art school and laughed when she said she's an artist not a cartoonist. It was such a pretentious and douchey thing to say.

  • Good issues here:Artist is a relative term.To some you r,to some u r not.By copying u learn some of this mastery & your own way to draw.but can end up in doubt.Loneliness can b positive if u start discovering through it who u really r.It's like turning punishment to work for u and not 2 hurt u.Mother hurts everybody the most simple way by reminding common prejudices.Playing the smart one can end up in saying stupidities that hurt.

  • when they hugged eachother.... fucking cute.

also, a question to those who read the book (clarification), i am currently reading the book and i just wanted to know who is that Michael they live with? I dont even think they mention him in the movie... neways thanks in advance fellas!

  • @humpaloompa they don't live with him.. it's just a neighbour who astrid goes to when her mother's not there to watch some movies and stuff

  • @johanna601 THANKS DUDE!

  • I think one of the central messages of the book (less in the movie) is that you can learn from everyone you meet. Star really tried to be good, Astrids Mom was warped but tried to live her life fully. All the characters are so real. Claire was just depressed, not living the life she wanted either.

  • god, a mother is the worst institution. its one that never leaves you, no matter what you don't want from it

  • the novel was so amazing, I expected so much more from the film. the scenes are chopped off, loose ends, missing people/events eerhhh, seriously disappointed. On its own it would have been a pretty good film but compared to the novel... yeah not so much :l

  • anyone else think the owner of the comic bookstore is cute?? :-)

  • i wanna know what that song is at 2:24 <3

  • hmm i think Astrid's mother's not strong.. She let a guy/anyone/someone dictate her life. Astrid's the real strong one.

  • @ampedpumpedstokedout Astrid's mother isn't strong, you're right. She's afraid. Afraid of being alone and ignored. Intensity and dischord are what draw attention to her and give her power. She didn't kill Barry because he cheated. She killed him because he made her feel small and insignificant, so she used him as a vehicle to get attention. In prison, someone always knows who you are. Out in the world, it's easy do dissolve into annonimity.

  • @coralaisly yup. it's true.. usually most people are blinded by who you are when it's out in the world. -- glad you agree.

  • @coralaisly it's not only that, it's almost like...a front i suppose.

she is strong, she was able to put herself into her world for a while, of course special people come into your life and you love them and you don't like the fact that they have that power of you. ingrid's sensitive, and loves unconditionally. you hate this weakness you have for people and their power of you, you want to be the only one who has power of you, and then he didn't care for it and left her. so she killed him.

  • @coralaisly You're stupid...Way to try and draw attention to yourself through a sorry attempt at making yourself seem intellectual and visceral...YOU'RE WATCHING A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE, STFU AND ENJOY!

  • @HannahBeeNaNaZ ...? Seriously? Responding to a 3 month old comment? I wasn't trying to make myself look like anything, or draw attention to myself. I was excitedly taking part in a conversation about a part of one of my favorite book / movies. That's just how I talk. You're reading way too much into a YouTube comment. I'll discuss any part of anything I like any time and anywhere I want to, thank you.

  • @HannahBeeNaNaZ Actually, I don't know if you're responding to the 3 month old one or the year old one... Regardless, this IS my way of enjoying the video, so calm down and let me enjoy it. If you disagree with me, fine, but having an opinion and analyzing a story and character within that story doesn't make me stupid.

  • @coralaisly Definitely afraid of seeming weak.

  • DMSO!

    Check:)

  • @CheckinGagaiNagain what is it?

  • @WinterinWunderland

    Heath prOduct:)

    google it!

DMSO to Relieve Pain, Increase Circulation, Repair Tissue Damage.

if interested let me know and i will send a link tO a gOOd health site:)

  • they skip an entire portion of her life in the book that had a dramatic effect on her future. I forget the woman's name, but the one with the turquoise house, where she meets Olivia Johnston, gets addicted to pain killers and pot, and ventures onto the line of prostitution. I wish they had included this in the movie

  • @anhidog4ever Not me why show someone Murtle? if someone treated me like that I'd slit their throat not caring what happened to me let that bitch try to put her hands on me and see what happens she'd end up on the sick o' clock news in a body bag guarrantee that

  • I was really looking forward to seeing Olivia's character :(

  • does anyone know what music is playing at 3:00?

  • omg i totally forgot that kid was in this movie...he was totally in almost famous!

  • the story line is so screwed up at this point.

  • Her mom is fucked.

  • This is probably one of the few rare times when casting is absolutely spot. on.

  • Totally skipped the part with Marvel and the other girl who starves her BEFORE she gets to Claire. Lame -_-

  • @EvangeliumDiSilenti Yeah I was reeeally looking forward to Olivia and Amelia's characters. Guess they didn't have enough time.

  • @forblueskies274 Sadly.

  • sorry but it cracksme up he's got brand name shoes when he has no money.

  • alright so does her boyfriend alwaya such a small character in the book? cuz i watch the movie millions of times, cant find the book, wonderin if its like this.

  • @julianalbruno

the book's even better than the movie (:

  • are they on the beach in Santa Monica here?

  • wtf what does her mom want her to do be alone forever

  • I want to go to a theme park in winter...

  • I really love this movie always protect yourself, sometimes from ppl trying to reach you dont become too far away. I dont hate the mother she was living in a world where astrid was only there to continue what she believed was right. To mold her daughter in to someone that was exactly like her

  • "You're not ugly." Pfff yea he is. lol

  • @LittleAspasia mean

  • @LittleAspasia really? i think hes cute.

  • Am I the only one who doesn't want to kick Ingrid in the face? In my opinion she isn't as hateul as people perceive her. There is so much more to her than manipulation. Read between the lines.

  • ya know ive watched this film at least 11 times and ive always wondered; why the hell is the dude at 1:47 sitting on a really high chair??..its a mystery to me.

  • Astrid goes to mac AFTER claire's home, this movie is pissin me off

  • dont be pissed off, its just a film, it can never be as awesome as the real thing.bthey couldnt fit everything in other wise itwould be so long.

  • @TheMysteriousMeow so what does it matter if its before or after? foster care isnt predictable

  • @HannahHeartStruck But the book is predictable, because its already been written

  • 1:22:

Cartoonist aren't artisits?! Wtf? That is a stupid line to put in this film and does not follow her character. Astrid is way more intelligent than that.

  • @opticalfriends very much agree

  • She cut her hair, b/c she was beat up for being beautiful ("Don't ever look at my b/f again or I'll kill you"). Cutting her hair is an attempt to draw attention away from her beauty.

  • Does it ever explain exactly why she cut her hair in the first place?

  • I want to kick the mother in the face.

  • Isn't he the boy from "Almost Famous"?

  • I wish i had a guy to draw with, kinda jealous of her since she has one... Ah well they are a cute couple ^.^

  • My favorite part from the entire movie was 1:48 to 3:05 they both looked so calm and relaxed and it all seemed natural as if they'd been with each other for years, and the tune really sets the mood...

  • i love their hug.. and i love paul :)

i wish i had my own paul :'(

  • its so nice..when they hug..

    ;'[

  • I can draw really well too and it is so much fun to be able to!! Its like a type of meditation, you clear your mind and the art flows onto the page. You can't learn it - I could capture an image when I was 4. My nephew too. Its genetic. The best thing is to warp the image, create a new vision.

  • @Herstory4321 You aren't special, so stop bragging. You can learn to draw. It's called taking art classes. Sure, for a lot of people it's natural, but don't act so high and mighty because you can draw well.

  • @ChioCytosine thats kinda harsh. but i understand what you mean. when people just brag regardless if they are naturals. Can you really learn to draw tht well through classes? I'm not very good but i would love to be able to draw

  • ow she makes him so happy i can tell just after the kiss

  • @RubySohoLove hey can u tell me wat the boys name is?

  • @robluver411 Paul

  • whitee oleander is the best moviee of all timee<3

  • her draws are sooooo amazing, i wish one day i could draw like this... it's very hard actually to draw people wehen they're constantly moving!

  • HAH! I totally posted that comment before Astrid said "It's like you don't even want me to be happy." VVV (:

  • i'm getting tired of her mom. she's ruining what little happiness her daughter is finding.

  • 1:48 look at that sneaky smile of the counter guy lol

  • Lollolol

  • the book is a million times better. i advise reading the book and letting your imagination take you through it, its more aesthetically pleasing.

  • That's usually how things go. I don't think a movie could ever come close to capturing the depth of a story that a book can.

  • Well, Diary of Anne Frank was just like the book.

  • I haven't seen that movie, perhaps I need to take a look.

  • hmm i love the book too, it's amazing, but i could never pick one over the other. the book has greater imagery, detail, but the actors are amazing in this film and the emotional intensity is too much to pass up. i love them equally.

  • this movie is so amazing and deep.

  • i swear to god ur scaring me !

  • why?...

  • DUDE UR SCARY CREEPY , DONT SCARE ME STOP IT :P lol welll lthe words u say just scare the crap out of me !

  • This movie isn't anything like the book. It's on my summer reading list so it's a shame.

  • omg! i know now, hes frisbee outa spun!

  • There' wonderful chemistry between Astrid and Paul (or whatever his name is). That guy is just adorable - perfect for the role. 5:17 - their kiss is so sweet and tender. =)

  • There's so much to learn from this movie. It strikes right to the core of the human experience. Alison Lohman was born to play the role of Astrid, and Michelle Pfeiffer gives one of her best performances I've seen as Ingrid.

  • I saw her face on the movie poster and I was like "o.o she looks like a great ingrid"

  • 2:02 is that the santa monica pier?

  • there is a scene in this movie where the daughter went to go see the mother in prison and the mom was shocked that she cut her hair, i remember that scene when I went to go watch this on the bigh screen cause me and my cousin was laughing so hard cause the mom looked like she was going to kill the daughter for cutting her hair so short. I really wanted to see that scene right now!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't stand her mother. She seems like a sociopathic psycho who only cares about herself. I don't even think she truly cares about Astrid except for the fact that Astrid can pass on her legacy one day.

  • @Kjs88musiclover Do you understand the concept of being of a sociopathic mindset?

  • @MutantEnemyGirl Yes, I'm a psychology and human services major. To be a sociopath means primarily to lack a conscience. Therefore, sociopaths are egocentric and have no empathy or regard for others. They are not always violent, but they can be if it seems to them as if it suits their best interests. Most individuals in the human services field believe sociopathy is genetic; however, some believe that sociopathy is caused by environmental factors such as rejection during childhood.

  • @Kjs88musiclover Actually i think the mothers selfishness, along with the love she has for her daughter plays a great role in astrid's ordeals and struggles, along with giving her an option to believe her mother, the people she associates herself with, along with her own ideas and perspectives. I actually am glad Astrid had a mother like that. That shows Astrid's strength and love for herself and her mother as well.

  • @Kjs88musiclover this is true...

  • I'm always stunned by how beautiful this movie is.

  • @lolwtf92

    I agree.

  • I kinda wanted to see olivia and marvel!

  • i rly rly rly did. i loved olvia im upset. i also wanted to see The lady that starved the kids. Just because i think those were such big parts of the book.

  • you mean that part where astrid stole sticks of butter? i loved that part! it was really important

  • The drawing of the man kinda looks like an aged drawing of barack obama.

  • haha lol, ye it dus. im an artist 2 :)

  • paul's a cutie. paul and astrid are o cute together.

  • i dnt knw no placement were they dont run after you if you awol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol when i awold they were on my ass hahahahahaa but not fast as i was

  • I wanted to see olivia :[

  • i know what you mean. that was a great part of the book. this movie is excellent, but anyone who hasn't read the book should definitely. astrid's full story is great

  • 6:20 sounds like my philosophy, sad as it seems and as much as i'd like to imagine otherwise.

I guess it's a matter of time before i cap someone's ass- y'all better watch your butts! xD

  • renee zelwegger is fine, but im really dissapointed she played claire.

i thought she should have been just like she looked in the book. very thin and brunette, big eyed. idk i dont think it was right at all: (

  • I think Paul is wonderful! I could easily fall in love with somebody like him!

  • i like their (her and paul) realationship. its comforting.

  • I LOVE this Thomas Newman soundtrack. All the music represents the hollowness & longing of the characters. The scene at the beach carnival, it's very similar to the music in "Road to Perdition", another Thomas Newman soundtrack.

  • He plays Paul Trout perfectly. So loveable. I love them. She really does make a good Astrid. Exactly how I imagined.

  • why did this get 6 thumbs down?

the prosecutors are becoming the prosecuted.

    oh how times have changed.

  • It's true. It's that simple. For some people it's even to simple to believe.

  • I agree. Six thumbs down is ridiculous. Even if you are a non-believer, there is no reason to put down someone's opinion. If she wrote Alah or something I bet there wouldn't have been so many negatives, but people don't like to hear about the goodness of Christ.

  • I guess a lot of atheists and secularists get on here they remember the trailer trash scene and love associating that stereotype with Christianity..I guess you are the one everyone is complaining about your rating..sorry about that...just proves to me more that my faith is right. The point in the movie is that she was exposed to unbalanced situations such as someone using religion as a crutch and her mother criticizing anything spiritual out of arrogance.

  • its not even that really i dont belive in god if u belive then ok yay for u im not gana judge just dont spew bullshit in my direction like telling me god will save me will just piss me off honestly tell it to someone who WANTS to hear it and in all honesty it makes people a little wacky such as "please save my child" then they get mad at god or jesus or w.e when their child dies......> .> its rather annoyhing but hey its what other ppl belive in who am i to say otherwise

  • Obviously people are going to aim your way. However, I've yet to send you some holier than thou dogma and its not my style. I'm just trying to elaborate more accurate intention of what these scenes were truly meant to do. Also not all people get mad at God when he doesn't serve what they want and its not whacky...its a belief. Every race and culture has had a belief system and as long as you don't use it for negative purpose its not whacky. I'm sorry you are so annoyed with spirituality.

  • She was smart for pushing a woman toward suicide and trying to stunt her daughter's growth? She was manipulative and self centered which is what got her in jail in the first place. If she would have been thinking of her daughter and not her vagina then her daughter would have lived with her and not the rest of screwed up society. That really is the point of this movie. You know they show this to potential foster care parents to help them get a glimpse of what kind of hell these kids go through.

  • Who knows how Astrid would have turned out if she had stayed with her mom. This way she learned to think for herself which is something she couldn't do around her mom.

  • Actually sexygirlclare, when I was a Christian I was the most depressed I've ever been.

It's the only time in my life where I had to be put on medication for depression because I was suicidal.

  • the best movie ever!!!!! patrick fugit is a sexy beast!

  • Patrick Fugit <3<3
