The Saturn Version doesn't even use the BUILD engine! It uses the same engine that made Powerslave. The funny thing is, Powerslave was on the BUILD engine when it was ported to PC. Whoever ported this, did a good job at remaking the levels.
@jackrabbitslim26 Yeah Powerslave was awesome, I've only played the PSX and PC versions, but I plan to get a Saturn soon so I'll try it out there too.
@zackfowler19601: Nope, he doesn't even say that phrase atall in the Saturn version, because there's no episode 4, The Birth, so there's no Pigsty mission, where he says the line, and therefore there's no line.
@PencilPusher93 thank you for the clarification, my friend. i'm a huge duke fan and cannot wait till duke nukem forever hits the shelves thanks to gearbox. :)
Considering the Saturn was made a 2D system, with 3D just put in at the last minute of development, this blows the PSX out of the water for 3D quality.
@Tigrou7777 well i hate to admit it but 3d was added late in the design process of the saturn .it seemde that sega was well on its way finishing up the hardware untill they saw the specs of the psx and therefore added a second chip for handling 3d.
Isn't there a secret door right next to the end of the level (where it's all red)? I think that is how you access Duke Burger, but I'm not sure if it is in the Saturn port.
@PencilPusher93 there definatly is a duke burger part in first level i dont know how to get there tho. i remember i think on the n64 version seeing it through one of the cameras.
@PencilPusher93 search for duke nukem 64 on youtube. click on second video down. towards the end of the video you see the area hes talking about. only in duke nukem 64 i beleive
@Monacomaverick In the N64 version only, it takes you to an office and a super market. Duke Burger is in Gun Crazy, the level that replaces Red Light District (same level, just strip club is replaced with a trucking site, and the bar is now a kitchen for the newly added Duke Burger restaurant.
@nintendoboy17 I stand corrected. There is something in the 64 version. Thats because 64 came out after the atomic addition which had duke burger. Never played the 64 version.
D3D on the Saturn used a completely different engine and not the original Build engine that D3D was made on.
It had the potential to be something great with the dynamic lighting, 3d model capability, true level over level, etc. but they did a half assed job.
All of the levels are mutilated, game logic went out the window and the entire game looks like rats maps galore. Not to mention maligned and squished textures.
I think there weren't any 3D models for Duke enemies until the later Duke games on PSX and N64. Much easier to port the game and add some more pezazz.
It's already impressive since the Saturn's 3D capabilities were lacking.
@Rajahgaming I have Duke3D(This game)for N64.I'm going to get the complete version from ebay, because I have only a demo of the PC version.I'm a big Duke Nukem fan too.
Maybe they should have done the same with the ps version. This uses the Powerslave engine, which was perfectly identical on both psx and saturn. I see on walls where the textures warp on angle.
The psx version uses the original graphics, but the engine doesn't do the perspective mapped textures (the un warping kind we see today) as well as the psx Doom port's. This is probably what lagged it.
Your absolutely right, it's those warped textures, as you said they only appeared on the Saturn version. They also appeared on Exhumed/Powerslave for the Saturn.
Yeah, I saw a facinating GBA 3d texture mapping demo of a 3d rectagle with a surface, which shows this very clearly. It has two texture modes, linear (warping) and perspective (non warping of course).
With linear on, it ran pretty smoothly. With perspective, it became lightly chuggy. In some spots it chugged alot.
Yes the netlink still works. It direct dials instead of connecting through a server. So as long as you know someone else with a Saturn and can place a longdistance call on a regular phone line, then yes you can play with the Netlink still. I've got video of an online Duke match I made last week.
This is a good version of "Stalker", better synth than the PC version (I'm guessing that all the audio was recorded on a SoundCanvas and converted to Redbook, the title track definitely was) but it's rather vanilla compared to Mark Knight's remix, which is what is in Total Meltdown for PS1.
Absolutely, the Stalker track thats in this version is actual music, unlike the PC version which was all MIDI music, so they made the right descision by remixing the music :). Yeah, Mark Knight's "remix" was really cool, kinda Techno type. All in all, the music is much better than the PC version. :).
This version is using Redbook, or CD audio, but it was still the PC MIDI played via a Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 sound module and recorded. If you hook a SC-88 up to the PC, DN3D will sound he same.
Preferably I choose the PC version better because that's the first one I played when I was 5 or 6. I think the PC version is better personally but that's just my opinion.
Considering that this was done on the Sega Saturn, it looks really good. Its better then the N64 and PSX versions. But not better then DOS. But still a great port!
does he say anything other than ' hail to the king baby' in this port?
