its not a reinvisioning or remake or whatever of the cartoon one. It's supposed to be that sequel and thats why she had that flashback when the cattipillar was like "Dont you remember" and then he disapeared into the cocoon.
Are you kidding me? You clearly don't understand brilliant film making, I only wish I could see the uncut version. Before Hollywood got their mindless hands on it.
Good review. Average film. Disney's Alice in Wonderland holds the wonder and magic. Tim Burton's looks like a circus of eccentric characters, various design of animals and plants, expensive costumes, and cartoony CGI.
SHOUT OUT!!! Heard "WONDERLAND" song by band Pullman Standard on the "Alice" extended trailer at Hollywoodswan90 on YouTube. DEFINIETLY worth the listening.
I am so sorry of what humanity did to your classic novel Mr. Carrol . I wish I could have stopped them from doing this but I am just one man. I am petitioning this piece of filth remove its current title and rename it somethinging more appropriate like "Blonde B*$@? in Transylvania." I assure you that any resemblance to your book and this movie is a complete accident.
Mister Disney I am so sorry what this movie has done to your name
@deedee9960 the bad reviews come from people who have read and enjoyed the book. If you have read the book, it is hard to have an unbiased opinion toward the movie. The movie falls well short of the book, this is an undeniable fact.
they have taste and mature enough to not just jump on because its alice in wonderland. hell the movie would of been called alice in narnia or alice in harry potter.
Hey matt, next time you do a movie review on a children's movie try giving a non bias review from a childs perspective. Not a grown man expecting an action packed thriller from "alice in wonderland" I think this is a fascinating and unique approach on the classic tale and visually it is untouchable.
@typeais Whe did he say he was expecting an action packed thriller. If you ask me, this film as far more action-y than it should be. What is this obsession film makers have lately with takeing something that never, in a million years, should have been an action movie and making it one?
Cliched epic battle scenes have no place in Wonderland. That's not to say I hate the film, it was just so much less than it could have been.
@typeais It may be directed towards children, but many people saw the original when they were children, so as i would want to see the update. But Tim Burton sucks the life (and colour) out of it. Visualy it was okay, but the 3d which i saw it in seemed to be just another way to get money as it was very poorly implemented
Alice is totally miscast. She is too old and too 21st century. That incredible Victorian Age magic lantern feeling and that strange amazing 'ghastliness' of the book isn't there (pig baby, HUGE caterpillar - not this tiny worm). That glorious ending of the book ('you are just a pack of playing cards !) has been replaced by Alice simply 'getting back to business' in the real world, without any real climax in Wonderland, unless you consider a D&D like dragon slaying a 'climax'. Disappointed.
SHOUT OUT!!! Been watching trailer. Song "WONDERLAND" on YouTube at Hollywoodswan90 (iTunes) DEFINITELY worth the listening. Missing from the movie.
"Wonderland" song by band Pullman Standard--at Hollywoodswan90-- "Wonderland" is missing from the Alice movie. "Wonderland" is on the extended trailer on YouTube. What happened??.
wow! this movie isnt based on the book!!! so who ever thought it was must have obviously not payed attention!!!! this is alice RETURNING to wonderlnd!!!! not based on the book!!!!!!! and i thought it was amazing, it was fast pased and needed more explenation but it was still a great movie!!!!
I know, why does everyone think it's the book? it's part of it..... but like..... come on, the way I see it, is that an author can write their mind, and a filmer can film their mind....
Tim Burton pretty much did his job as a director and completely succeded!!! what were people expecting pray tell me? he did it! MASTERED THE ALICE! GOSH!
This movie was indeed inspired by the books. The original characters are the same, and duh! Where is Alice going back to? Wonderland, right? I'll say it again: I am completely awatre that this movie was not an adaptation of either book. It was an extention. The premise, I'll admit, is creative. I like the idea of Alice becoming a strong woman. I am not saying the story Burton told is rubbish at all, but there no connection between Alice and her audience or the other characters.
This review is completely on point. Visually it was amazing. But of course it had to be because the story and story telling was frustratingly bland.
I found too many dead moments, Alice was nonexistent. No strength in character and acting. The dialogue was a hit or miss as far as connection between characters. I walked out disappointed. I like Burton, but this fell completely short for a great movie.
THANK YOU! Mia is a true, natural beauty and based on her looks alone, she is exactly who I would've cast as Alice. However, her acting was painfully bland. She was not believable at all as Alice, and that thoroughly disappointed me. I am aware that this movie is an extention and not an adaptation of either book. The premise is interesting and creative. Although it wasn't completely terrible, it didn't do the books justice at all.
@SpunkyLamb Tim Burton has had a fun little sojourn into the world of adaptations and remakes, but I think it's time he got back to making origional films. I want another "Edward Scissor Hands" =(
Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice were brilliant! Two of my favorite movies of all time! I have yet to see Ed Wood. He used to be such a wonderful storyteller. I think he just got lazy and jumped on the Hot Topic money train. He knows his movies are catnip for "emo" and "goth" kids, primarily under the age of 20; so tons of merch is made and 90% is put into Hot Topic, so before opening day is even a month away, Burton is already rolling in the dough. Sickening.
@ajkl27 i agree. i knew what was going to happen next and the story did rush a little in the beginning. i wasn't that into the movie like everyone else.
the movies nothing like the book. The book was amazing and it doesnt jump around much at all but the movie does and it gives it a rushed feel to it like it was thrown together in a couple days. Alice in Wonderland is one of my alltime favorite stories but i consider this absolute drivel and an insult. Tim Burton was one of my favorite directors but after seeing this idk if ill be able to look at him the same anymore.
@huffnat Doesn't jump around as much? First Alice is growing and shrinking trying to get to the garden and next she's swimming with a rat. She's "playing" with the court then she meets the Mock Turtle. In a sense, there was more jumping in the book then in the movie. I will agree, it did feel rushed, but I got the same feeling while reading the book.
The movie is EXCELLENT. It's a movie with humor, action, great costumes, terrific special effects, amazing animal characters and beautiful painted backgrounds. The actors and actresses were cast perfect for their characters. Along with all that is a great story and fantastic music. ***** 5 STARS - GO SEE THE MOVIE
Again american reviewers miss the point. I went today with my children loved it. Yes from an adults perspectgive it has many flaws, but they didn't matter. And seeing Johnny Depp do 30 secounds of the Jabberwocky poem was a privelige. (Wonder where the mock-tutle was though). I suggest a child could and would have done a better job of reviewing the movie.
As always american reviewers show their inability to see past imperfection into the heart of the matter. The movie was very enjoyable because my children loved it. I wasn't bored and even chuckled at Tweedle dee and Tweedle dum (played so well by Matt Lucas) and the whole affair was well done. Seeing Jonny Depp doing 30 secs of the Jabberwoky poem was stunning! Maybe a child would have done a better job of the review.
I agree, it was stiff and boring! As every scene move from one to another, nothing exciting was happening until the end! The costumes were good, but the idea of the storyline needed to unfold way more.

well, the point of "Alice" is to be weird. Not necesarily exciting, just eccentric. I'm seeing it in IMAX 3D later tonight with some friends, and Tim Burton is the best director ever (I think), so I'm pretty excited.
Seen it. And it was bad. It was typical Disney non humorous humor mixed with CG.
I thought Tim Burton would have made it dark, but no. It was a let down. Then came Anne Hathaway. It got worse. Then finally to top off the crap cake, Johnny Depp starts break dancing at the end and we're lead out the door by crappy Avril Lavign music or something.
This is a RETURN to wonderland, not the same Alice and WOnderland story. Every alice and wonderland has been different and this is just a Burtonesque version of it. Although It would probably be pretty cool if he made this in the 80's or early 90's .(stop motion spectacle)

To me a movie is made to entertain you, and Alice in Wonderland did that.
It's not Burton's best work, but it's worth a watch.
It felt like a proper sequal to the book/movie/whatever...
Well, everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I give it 3.5/5
If anybody cares LOL
