@jscorpion000 She wasn't that bright. For Stanford White, she was just a plaything to be enjoyed for as long as he wanted her; she didn't have the brains to realize that. He didn't "corrupt" her; she was a CHORUS GIRL, but God's sake. As for Harry Thaw...well, the fact that she married him was further proof she was an airhead. Thaw was rich, but he was also revoltingly ugly and criminally insane. Of all the guys she could have married and she picks HIM? Yes, she was dumb as a tree stump.
@HotButterOnToast No, that doesn't let him off the hook. But she wasn't exactly an untouched innocent when she became Stanford White's lover. She became his mistress; she would have married him but he lost interest. I think that may have been why she told crazy Harry that she had been "ruined" by White; she wanted to get back at him and figured nutty Harry would have him beaten up or something. Instead looney Harry killed him, and got off with a minor stay in a posh mental institution.
recently, a book written by white's great granddaughteer claimed that child molestation runs in white's family of kennites and that she was molested repeatedly by all the males in that family while growing up.
@atfatw The book I think you are referring to is Suzannah Lessard's Architect of Desire . She is a great-granddaughter of White and offers her own personal observations about her family history.
Too bad she did'nt play her cards right. She should have made Standford White beg for it and also Harry Thaw. She could havae gotten all of their money
There's actually no evidence that Evelyn ever became pregnant by Barrymore. She was sent to the school in NJ to get her away from him, not because she was pregnant. There's a lot of urban myth surrounding her - the book clears it all up - and the truth is stranger than fiction.
the It Girl existed in one way or another even before Evelyn & Clara Bow. There was Lily Langtry a generation before Evelyn and Lola Montez a generation before Langtry. All involved in show business in some way.
I want to read the book cause i hear it has great & rare photos. I am more interested in her relationship with Barrymore, the two pregnancies by him and rumors she may have given birth to one of the babies. If that's true that's a revelation. According to a Barrymore biographer he made love to Evelyn while they lay on one of his father's old theater coats. Her affair with Barrymore was as close to an innocent young love that Evelyn got and they tearfully re-met 40 years later. Just touching!!
The original photos are available for viewing and are in the archives of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.-absolutely beautiful photos..and so well preserved!!
I have just read the book and it is wonderful I am so glad you wrote it I have been interested in this subject sence the film "Crime Of The Century" a few years ago Thank you for writing a great book
Paula, Congratulations on your book! Chris told me (showed me) the last time he was home. I'm getting a copy and will read it soon. All the best....Jim V.
The piano music is by Marvin Hamlisch. It was actually from the soundtrack from the movie "The Sting". I agree she is beautiful. In fact I am enraptured by Evelyn Nesbit.
Paula: I'm almost done w/your book and I love it! I especially enjoyed the way you described the relationship between Evelyn and Stanford. There were so many details that I have never read before and I can see how she would view him as a "wizard" of sorts. Anyway, I think you're a great writer and I will recommend your book to my friends/family. Thanks for writing it. :)
I am reading this book right now and it's excellent--very well-written and engaging. The Evelyn Nesbit-Stanford White story is fascinating and tragic. If this had happened today, Evelyn would be a star like Britney, etc. She was very beautiful. It's a shame that she had to suffer so much. She deserved better!
she was very beautiful
and i dont think that she was gold digger
i think she had bad mother
but she lived different time where were other options than today are like s before marriage was forbidden

@cynthiacher so she was a "chorus girl" and that excuses a 47 year old man getting a 16 year old drunk?
