I can't see anything which would make this cartoon banned. To be honest, some of the old cartoons that have been banned are silly, look at what's on instead! Mindless, alien hunting kids that don't know how to live life without consumerism. Yeah, we sure made sure nothing BAD would happen....Ever....
Isn't the chance of something bad happening what adds to the spice to life?
I think the reason it was banned was that the three ghosts sat on the the electric chair and the prison officer turned on the switch to kill them . I think that is nothing what kids have to see ore am i wrong ^^
This was probably banned because it could scare young children, but it is a wonderful tribute to the great Cab Calloway, and should have been followed up similarly with Papa Celedin's "Marie Laveau", which is just as creepy and cool.
Woah...maybe it's just the animation, but I think this song has a dark tone to it which really makes the animation fit. Kinda reminds me of Agents of Oblivion's "A Song That Crawls" (an even darker bluesy song).
It's easy to admit this was creepy, but CAB CALLOWAY was the bomb! I love his voice, I love his moves, and I love the rotoscope animation of those days. Of course, rotoscope was the reason why Flescher was Disney's main rival.
So...Why'd they put that song to Betty Boop running away from home? o_O Doesn't make sense to me...But I did like it. Cab Calloway is pretty awesome. <3
I really don't get why this was banned. There's nothing scary or offensive about it. There's no reason to be scared by the ghost's dancing, because he is dancing like Cab Calloway, just like in the intro. Suffice to say, if you are bothered by this cartoon in any way, you are indeed, an idiot.
I quite agree with somegirl4's commentary--this cartoon is rich with cultural and social elements of the time it was made in; it is a true zeitgeist highlighting the waning time of the 20's Jazz Age. When it was made there was nothing offensive or derogatory about it and to cast the mores and values of today onto this cartoon is senseless at best.
I can understand y it was banned...the elecric chairs...they we're kinda bad. too bad for kids to see you kno? and the face that pops out like all the sudden and stuff. i'm glad it was banned. i do like the Home Sweet Home thing in the end tho. that was cute. =]
C'est génial !!! St James Infirmery reste une obsession et une constante pour les auteurs de betty boop (je ne comprendrais jamais pourquoi). Good job.
actually, if you listen to the song, it's about a hooker who does drugs. This cartoon actually frightens me, I bet a kid would be really freaked out by it.

During the rotoscoped ghost (walrus) dancing, notice the background and what's in it. That's probably why the ban, it's all demonic.

its probably banned because of the content of the song. i dont get it because that was part of the generation, but it is a bit inappropriate for kids

The part that really gets me is the cat's kittens sucking the life out of it. o_O That's fucked up.
This whole cartoon is excellent though, it should not have been banned.

I think it was banned due the singing ghosts at the end.
They are executed in the chair while they are singing, and it´s evident they are a "coloured" ghost chore.
I hope you understand my english.
I also think Betty's parents are sorta Jews or something like that.
;)

Oh, ok.
I´d thought that explanation, but it seemed too obvious to me (too much drug consume, hehe).
Thanks for your help.
I thought it was something about racism or else.
