  • Indigo Girls, "Go"

  • Amen. Thanks for the comment. Peace.

  • the date on this video is 2006 and it is more relevent than ever. i don't think anyone, woman or man, can underestimate the enormous gift these women gave, their bravery and vision is almost too incredible.

  • U GO GIRLZ! listen im making a histoy fair project on susan b anthony, so do u think u could fill me in on some info about her? oh and nice vid! keep on the good work! GIRLZ RULE!

  • Thanks for the comment. Susan B. Anthony was an incredible suffragist. Her father was a Puritan, cotton farmer and worked to abolish slavery. She belonged to the Unitarian church.

  • Nice video 5 stars! Do you remember the name of the woman on the bus who refused to give her seat up to a white person? I can't remember her name :(

  • Rosa Parks. Thanks for the comment! Make sure you vote! Peace... 8-)

  • thank you sisterhood of woman

  • What terrible music *urchhh....*

  • Thanks for your comment. Peace. Vote.

  • Women were treated as Chattle, the sufferagettes fought for freedom- not just equal rights. Thank God men today understand that. Thank God in the eyes of my wonerful fiance, I am his equal and his best friend. Thank God for liberty!

  • Point well taken. Thank you hmh!

  • Nobody has to respectfully disagree and move on...next you'll be wanting us to call you "Sir"! A healthy debate is what is required. You seem to think you have the right to come on here and voice your opinions (over and over again), yet you want other people who express a differing opinion to move on? C'mon...YOU show some class!

  • What the? Paris Hilton and Britney Spears havent ruined anything...they are rich, successful women. Jealous? Feminism is about the right for a woman to choose their destiny and they seem to be doing that! I am a woman...and very VERY proud of my gender. Not one person that knows me would say I'm subservient. I support myself and my children without help from a man...and you say the suffragette movement was a failure? Too shallow to vote? You're absurd!

  • I'll tell you MY story.I suffered years of domestic abuse at the hands of my ex(the father of my children). He physically, sexually and emotionally abused me.I was considering suicide. One day I woke up and thought,'If I'm not afraid of killing myself, why am I afraid of fighting back?'.I became violent and caused him injury a few times. He went to the police and they took his statement, but it didn't take them long to work out that my violence was merely a justified reaction to my situation.

  • you need to do more research...look into the topic further. Why do men kill their wives? Why do women kill their husbands? What are the reasons behind these murders. Many of the women given lenient sentences for killing their husbands, did so after suffering years of torture and abuse and most courts would deem it inappropriate to make them suffer more. Men who have suffered extensive abuse and then go on to commit violent crimes also often receive lenient sentences for the same reasons.

  • i am a man but these woman are inspirational!

thank you for what you have done of the women of britain!

now they all have the chance of real future!

  • Finally, any true feminist will tell you that the expectations of patriarchy can hurt men just as it hurts women. Actually, people often have more similarities based on class than gender anyway. I highly, highly recommend an essay by Scott Russell Sanders called "The Men We Carry In Our Minds."

  • Part of the issue may also be with the jury. A jury may be reluctant to give the same degree of punishment to a woman as to a man, so the judge mitigates the sentencing in order to increase the likelihood of a fair trial.

Regardless, gender biases, especially in the courtroom, are never a good thing.

  • The discrepancies you mention are likely the result of strong societal factors; which are inclined to protect women when possible. Particularly if the judge feels that way.

Also, it's true that violent women were often (but not always) provoked by the violence their husband or father did against them in the past. I don't see why it's unfair to take that into consideration. Our court system always takes into account circumstances and motivation when sentencing.

  • There have been times when the justice system is sexist against women. Times when children automatically went to the man in a divorce, regardless of the ability of the woman. Times when "what was she wearing?" was considered a legitimate question in rape cases (it ISN'T).

Today women are generally favored in custody cases, though the father does have parental rights and cannot lose them unless he is deemed unfit.

  • In truth, if we're letting the criminal populace represent all men and all women respectively, then the logical choice would be to take the vote away from men since women commit significantly fewer crimes, especially violent crimes.

  • It only makes sense to bring up skewed sentencing if significantly more women commit crimes than men do; but the opposite is the truth. Far more men commit crimes (especially violent ones) than women do.

Can you show me ... What percentage of criminals are women? What percentage of men have a criminal record, esp. for violence? Is this a higher or lower percentage than women with a criminal record? What proportions of violent crimes are done by men versus women?

  • For me to believe that women are "too shallow to be allowed to vote," you'd have to prove that women are incapable of critical thought regarding politics. Myself being a female highly motivated to learn about and participate in politics (never mind that more and more women are being elected to positions of power), you have quite an uphill to climb with that issue.

Can you demonstrate that ALL women are unpolitical and shallow? Or that men are innately superior in their political understanding?

  • Hear hear, I agree whole heartedley! I like all the woman in my family from my mother downwards have a degree. I am the first woman in the family to achieve a masters. Trust me I had to work hard intelectually for that one!

  • It'll take me awhile to sort through the info but I will look through it. I'm always grateful for more things to research (seriously), so thanks.

But even supposing you're correct that female offenders are treated unfairly in the court system, that doesn't prove that "Women today are TOO SHALLOW to be allowed to vote." Not only because it fails to prove the alleged "shallowness" of women in general, but because it's grossly unfair to judge all women based on the treatment of female criminals.

  • He got off easy for the same reason that the girls you mention above did: celebrity and money. It had nothing to do with gender. Why do you think OJ wasn't convicted? What about Ben Odierno, Robert Blake, Alberto Izaga, etc. I can find more for you.

More responses will come later, when I have time. I will read through and consider the other information you mention.

  • You didn't address my point. If you have such a huge problem with these "starlets" getting off on light punishments, then why do you have no serious problem with what Mel Gibson did? It wasn't just a matter of him acting like a sexist, racist asshole; it was also a matter of him *drunk driving* and mouthing off to a cop. Did he get a harsh punishment? No.

  • I invite and appreciate anyone's perspective and opinion and you are welcome to vocalize it on my video. Generalizations are a dangerous thing, though... my intent was to encourage my fellow women to vote and use their voice. It is shameful not to after all the work that was done to give it to us. Have a good day.

    Peace

  • Wait, so if a woman (say, Linsday Lohan) got completely smashed, was pulled over for drunk driving, then let loose string of grossly sexist and racist remarks, and threatened cops ... you wouldn't have *any* problem with that? Because that's what Mel Gibson did, and he got little more than a slap on the wrist for it.

  • Finally, I would point out that while Britney and Paris and the like's behavior is tastelessly stupid, it isn't often illegal. (The only exception being Britney's negligent parenting skills, which caused her to lose custody of her kids; a fair punishment which takes her kids into consideration, not her looks or fame.)

So what punishment would you propose for them, hmmmmm? And for what specific crimes? Or what criminal behavior do you see women regularly committing which goes unpunished?

  • In a word, yes. MANY people idolize Pat Robertson, to the point where they not only watch the 500 Club regularly, they also give him lots of money and vote for the people and ideas he supports. That's way more dangerous power than Britney would dream of wielding.

  • Got statistics on that? What kind of crimes? Do you seriously see lots of women committing crimes and running around willy nilly all the time. Wherever you live, I'm glad I'm nowhere near there. The women and men I meet are generally WAY more rational than that.

  • The bottom line is, it's unfair to hold half the population of the earth accountable for the stupidity of certain celebrities.

  • Um, Mel Gibson is still a successful moviestar and director, Tom Cruise is still a famous movie star, and Pat Robertson still owns his own TV channel. Looks to me like they get away with insanity just fine.

Also, Mel Gibson used his supposed weakness (drunkenness) to excuse grossly anti-semitic remarks. No amount of alcohol can make a non-racist turn into a racist. That's a pathetic excuse. Yet he remains successful.

  • Nicely put together. I subscribed. Come check out my channel for a bit of humor. Happy 2008.

  • Fantastic list of women, great song (which I hadn't heard before), and wonderful video overall! Brava!

  • Thank you! I'm glad you liked it...

  • Seriously, when will the public quit equating all women with the most famous celebrity idiots? Does Mel Gibson's break down, Tom Cruise's craziness, or the existence of a creature so mindbogglingly wacko as Pat Robertson mean that men should lose the vote? There are just as many male morons screwing up their lives (and often everyone else's too), so let's not play the double standards game.

  • this is an awesome video! kassady is cool. so is elizabeth. hahaha

  • shocker!

ps. lil freudian slip there? ;p

  • for every 'airhead' this country has, there are at least 5 douches like you to compliment it on the 'tool' side of the sexes so stfu ;p

  • love it, 5 stars!!

  • Thank you so much! Peace... 8-)

  • Thank you for your comment. I don't think all their work is destroyed, but it sure seems that way sometimes. Alot of women today are slapping the suffragists in the face. They would be ashamed of us.

  • I must agree with you on that their work is not destroyed. It is just that as a culture we worship these crazed gits and don't care much about anything that matters. Not many want to go back to the times when a man's power in a family is the final words, a women could not get a decent job or hold land, and a father can just marry off his daughter to a jerk. But no one does anything to prevent. Besides America seems to be heading that way with Bush's new policies.

  • I liked this video and song. I'm writing a paper about women's suffrage for school (some of this stuff is actually pretty interesting). =] it bums me out that my sis dosn't want to vote though..

  • wanna here a funny joke?!

    womens rights

  • I don't find that humorous, but thank you for commenting. Peace.

  • Thanks, it goes straight to my playlist.

  • You're welcome!

  • i'll post my documentary when it's done.

  • I would LOVE to see it! These are incredible women. I can't believe we don't see movies made about them (commercially). Our daughters need to know who to thank for our freedom and rights as women. Peace to you.

  • thank you so much! i'm doing a documentary on alice paul for a national history day project, and im glad that she was the second person on your video! make more.

  • women have a major role to play if we are going to sort out this global situation and as you say, that's only if you stick together and stop attacking one another... so... how is that going to happen? got any plans?

  • Well, it starts in my own backyard, right? I try to support women I see out in the community. I think it starts with patting people on the back when you see them doing a good job. On a global level... wow, it's overwhelming, is it not?

  • nearly overwhelming yes hehehhe... but it is like diving into the sea, taking one wave at a time...

buddhists say respect the low and honour the high... which is about local, practical real action as well as keeping sight on the ideal... doesn't harm thinking about it... and youtube does offer a rich medium for communication...

  • I would like to note that it has been brought to my attention that using the term, "Suffragette," was actually considered deragatory by these women who fought for us. I apologize for this and have been informed that the term "suffragist" is the preferred term. Thank you and peace...

  • yeah, awesome!!here in Greece we got to vote in 1953!it's only 53 years ago.there are so many things still to be done, but i'm afraid women are not interested any more.

  • ... and not being interested is such a slap in the face of the women before us who fought SO HARD! History is important to know. Thanks for your comment and peace...

  • Excellent work!

  • Thanks! 8-)

  • Thanks for the comment. Peace.
