"He took care of other people"?!?! He Dumped his first wife, who he had 3 small kids with. The oldest of those kids had such a low self-esteem from being neglected by his Father, he became a drug addict and died of an overdose. But because he was a Wannabe-Brando and did a little activism in the 60's, put his skinny face on salad dressing & pasta in the 80's(After his Son OD), and gave the proceeds from that juck to charity; oh that made up for the Evil he did before that...OKAY..If you say so.
@JohnAndRowForever Anything you say, pal, you are the judge. He get married young - and made a mistake like the lot of people. Then he found THE woman and stayed with her and in love with her to the rest of his days and (except one slip) was faithful to her. Of course he had not enough time for so many kids with all the activities he had (and it doesn't excuse him, but it is explanation), but he didn't cut any connection between him and his kids from the first relationship.
Paul Newman was a rare individual. He could have easily wasted his fortune and fame on selfish acts and self promotion like most of our socialites (you know who they are and they're not worth mentioning here). Instead, he spent his time, fortune and fame on helping the less fortunate. He may be remembered for his movies, but his true legacy will live through the people he helped. We are fortunate to have had someone like him. Rest well, Mr. Newman and thank you.
Paul Newman left a legacy for not only his acting, but for his humanitarian efforts. He changed the lives of many children through The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Thanks for coming along Paul Newman, and for making the world a better place.
@MRoy01 Shut up. Everybody who's ever been in the Late Night talk show business, from Steve Allen, to Johnny Carson, To Conan O'Brien, to Jay Leno and David Letterman, all across the board, has made fun of politicians. His jokes about Palin were not only not the worst or meanest thing any one of those people have said about a politician, the weren't even the meanest things that a late night host has said about PALIN HERSELF.
This was a brilliant tribute to a great man, and I'm glad Dave did it
@MRoy01 Sarah Palin is just an attention whore, and deserved whatever jokes were made on her expense. She needs to get a life, and Bristol needs to get a real man... and the other underage daughter needs to prepare for a teenage pregnancy just like her stupid fat sister.
I absolutley hated hearing that Paul had passed. Watching that clip really made me realize that the last respectful person in hollywood is gone. When my time is up after my family, he is the 1st person I'd like to meet upstairs....
@larrymcg421 It's very telling that Paul Newman and David Letterman were great friends...both very private, very brilliant and very compassionate men.
paul newman was a true class act in everything he did, my personal favortie was the sting...i could never see anyone else playing that role(not even the legendary jackie gleason) RIP Mr. Newman!.......also, did anyone else notice that jaime and adam from mythbusters were in the video during the balloon trick?i wonder when that took place and if that is where they began working together
Paul Newman, died last year folks.. the actor, the racecar driver, "Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" one of the best movies ever, the entrepreneur- Spaghett sauces etc. Paul Shafer is the bald canadian guy on Letterman,
This made me so sad. I know the Golden Age (Altough Paul's talent endured for many many years after that) ended long ago, but the fact that all the stars are gone now really means that whole time is dead.
i know you are not the kinf of fellow who is proud or pleaced with himself but you really should be, thats a wonderful thing you've done for this world, paul newmann ladies and gentleman
Being one of the campers from the camp's (Hole in the wall gang) first few years, i can honestly say that meeting him has changed my life. He had a major role in the running of the facilities, and the world is just a little lesser without him.
I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Newman at the 12 hours of Sebring way back in the late 70s. I 15 was years old and was in the company of other teen friends. My buddy's dad introduced us to him.I had heard he valued his privacy and rarely signed autographs. Well he was very cordial and friendly with us kids.He enjoyed showing off his race car and even prepared some delicious phily cheese steak sandwiches. We were so happy we forgot to ask him for his autograph!
Paul Newman was for me not just the greatest and most under rated film actor of them all, but one of the greatest human beings to ever walk the earth, if one was to judge an actor's legacy by the degree of sadness felt universally by his passing then there would be no question as to who was - if nothing else - the most loved Hollywood actor of them all.
I loved Dave's tribute to Paul Newman....the story about the car is too much!...thanks for sharing

@astroboirap - No doubt, as the king of cool yourself, you're in a perfect position to offer that assessment.
I just love it when no-name losers so freely criticize popular, accomplished people.

This wonderful tribute is a perfect example of why Letterman is better than Leno. Leno tells simple jokes. Letterman is a broadcaster.
