I am not sure that these aircraft were even equipped with radio, given that takeoff clearance from the tower to the pilot had to be made visually by flashlight. It is also said that the four Bristol Jupiter engines had to ben run gently for 20 minutes before takeoff to minimise risk of seizure when under full power.* Very comforting! I used to know the last surviving pilot of the HP42s from Imperial Airways, the late Captain Ronald Ballantine. He told me that the HP42s were the most reliable aircraft he had ever flown.
