  • I bought a light globe that has Sylvania written on the box, do Sylvania sell their own brand of light globes? Maybe I shouldn't be saying this, but if you were to chose between buying one of these things for your kids as you suggest or buying a cheap Google Android tablet or Chromebook, wouldn't you be better off buying the Android Tablet/ Google Chromebook? I know they cost more, but wouldn't they be more useable than this? I mean how much software is available for Windows CE these days?

  • It has how to download google chrome on it??

  • Why the video of weslife on t4 like 10 years ago?

  • my dad's got an Acer that runs Windows 7.... & it's not wireless G it's 802.11g

  • that is really small i was about to get it

  • I bet the battery life is excellent on it though right?

    I seen these for 69 xmas 2011

I thought about picking one up the small size could be a real advantage in some situations.

    Ultimately I passed cause it wasn't x86.

  • 06:46 - 06:55 close your eyes and think dirty minded. LOL

  • I was asked to look at this for a friend as it did not come with a power cord. Does anyone know what the specs are for the cord. I know you may say do not waste your time, but I do want to give them that option to try it for the first time.

  • can you run minecraft on it?

  • @zombiecake1 Are you serious!?

  • Factoid: This is the only computer you can get in North Korea. Seriously.

  • WINDOWS CRAP EDITION?!?!!?!??!!!

  • you sound so bored....

  • Hey, do you know where I can get one of these? I have a laptop core i-7 3ghz with 6gb ram so I want a super dirt cheap netbook that I can (literally) throw around for some....projects.

  • At first I was laughing at this laptop with how underpowered it was, but if there was a battery for it that could give it 16+ hours of battery and a WWAN card, I would totally be okay with it for email, light web browsing, text editing, etc.

  • Will it blend?

  • Finally! I am going to buy a cheap netbook like this, just in white and with Android 2.2 (haven't decided between android and windows yet). I haven't seen as detailed review like this any other place :D Thanks!

  • can i play battlefield 3 in this?

  • @SuzumiyaHaruhi321 No, not even Battlefield 0.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOO FIREFLIES!!!!!!! :U

  • if you're thinking to get this thing, just get a linux netbook, revome the hdd and put a smaller one with windows xp, sell all the hdd on ebay, and you still have a better thing at roughly the same price

  • can u get itunes on it

  • what is a better laptop you would recommend for that price?

  • @01pokemonster *Anything* is better than this. Even a 10-year-old laptop that you pull out of the garbage!

  • @vwestlife hmm.. can you install winXP on it? via USB?

  • @bjorn860 No.

  • @vwestlife actually i'm watching ur other videos, seems interesting how old hardware was so native nowadays. cheers from Iceland. =P

  • @bjorn860 I mean Windows XP 'Lite Version'

  • you can pick these up with android 2.2 and a 1ghz cpu and 256 mb ram for roughly the same price.

those things seem to use the same case as this

  • hello dude? what are the format of the application of this window ce ?

  • windows ce also run on sega dreamcast

  • that thing has much worse specs than my entry level android smartphone (except the screen resolution is 240-400 on my intercept and this has VGAish res)

  • could i get google chrome on it?

  • @vwestlife Correction Yes! i got rid of Windows CE formatted the Memory RAM and installed Puppy Linux on it, then downloaded all the drivers and used Puppy insted of Windows CE the problem is that windows CE was it's "copasity" and the fact that it't 90 USD is not fair to any of the comanies that help put this toghether to give you more, sorry for my english i live in mexico and all my family owns one, there the cheapest thing you can get here. and most conviniant.

  • @FragBase I know that you are lieing because puppy linux foes not support arm processors. Puppy only supports x86/x64

  • @crazycouisins28 you can get opera mini 5.0

  • It's at cvs for 59$ right now. I might get one

  • Think I could install damn small linux or Windows 9x on this thing?

  • @coffeeandsugar20 It's not likely.

  • i want one to put android on it but they stopped selling these :(

  • @SkyPirate600 They are all over ebay :)

  • does windows ce 6 have movie maker please reply

  • @BobbyBeak No. Windows CE has nothing like it. Windows CE is barley functional for a device like this in my opinion.

  • @thedarkone2134 thanks bud

  • @thedarkone2134, Windows CE is used in MANY GPS's. Tom-Tom, PB, Mio, all of them. You can unlock most and do most of this. On a GPS :3

  • could you download google Chrome or safari and etc.?

  • @ZWIGEDgames no. its like downloading chrome to a an old windows mobile 5.0 phone.

  • So its basically a watered down version of windows XP?

  • @Metallica3331 No, it's really most like Windows 95 or 98.

  • @Metallica3331 wow ur playing right

  • little help, when i try to watch youtube videos it just says error and wont do anything,do i have to turn on the player or something?

  • @KODAKCAR4 I don't have this computer anymore, so I can't help you with that.

  • does it have microsoft wordpad, powerpoint etc.. and could we download microsoft 2010?

  • @Cutie390 No. This is not a PC, so it cannot run PC software.

  • wELL IT LOOK NICE I JUST RECIVE THE AD FOR CSV NEXT WEEK AND IS 69.99 BUT I NEED FLASH ON IT MOST FOR VIDEOS AND VIDEO GAMES FOR MYKIDS SO I DONT THINK IT WILL WORK THEN FOR MY KID!

  • @CRUZPHOTOS Buy a 7" android netbook on eBay. Has flash and the youtube app.

  • could u play crossfire or minecraft? PLS RESPOND!!!!!!!!:D

  • @fpsgamerburner Hell no are you fucking crazy its a toy really

  • @TheRocker894 u mad bro? just asking geez cool it

  • @fpsgamerburner Sorry about that! Its really just a email checker its really not a computer. I would recon a acer aspire for about $200

  • i hope i can get one of these on ebay... but the one they have is unbranded but its the same thing and you can get apps for windows ce from freewarepocketpc(.net) using their omarket software i think... if you want one of your own, search ebay for "mini laptop" then go to other computers and then set price lowest first...

  • Dude I love your WCBS FM Sticker! I want it, i always listen to it's sister station for Philadelphia 98.1 WOGL.

  • I got 1 for $95.00 wasn't really thinking now im trying to find out how to use this thing!

  • @2003SCT lol, :P

  • How good is this as an ereader?

  • Note: Here's how to restore a bricked 7" CVS netbook. Copy Sylvania's Windows CE 6.0 "script" folder to FAT32 formatted SD card. With supply plugged in and powered off, plug SD card into slot. Hold power button about 2 seconds to power on. Allow setup to run until it asks to remove the SD card, BUT DO NOT REMOVE IT!!! Instead, click OK on the message, and click menu shutdown. When off, remove SD card, wait 1 minute. Hold power again about 2 seconds. It should power up just fine. Worked for me!

  • Wal mart has them for like $79 now...

  • Great! Just bought one at CVS for $69.00 Everything seems to be great!! Foe my 10 year daughter, it's perfect!

  • @geofftubeyou Are you sure it was $69

  • Ha, probably better than my laptop if you throw linux on it. My laptop must have paused for loading like 20 times in this 16 min video

  • if you want to torture your child, get them one of these!!! :/

  • Does that version of IE have tabs?

  • can it run minecraft

  • @Xxawes0mexX It has 128 GB of RAM. So it probably can't.

  • @NegaScoot 128 MB, not GB.

  • @vwestlife Ty for correcting me.

  • @Xxawes0mexX No.

  • do you know if you can test to see if you can use a external hard drive with that and download to that hard drive with that because i want to use it for all the stuff i download and upload

  • @dylbyl1234 I don't have this netbook anymore. I know that USB thumb drives will work with it, so maybe a USB external hard drive will work also, but I don't know for sure.

  • @vwestlife why dont you have that net book anymore

  • lol hack it and put Damn small linux on it. Even though these days you can get a decent netbook for like $200 US

  • lol

  • would a windows 95 game work on it through a flash drive or external harddrive?

  • @xXBlazeTheHedghogXx Maybe you can run some old pc games on this, with special winCE applications. You can run LucasArts adventure games(Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, etc) with ScummVM application. I think it is also possible to run some MS-DOS games with PocketDOS app. Also, there is a NES emulator, what can run old Nintendo games(Mario, BattleCity, etc). So, it seems winCE has tons of opportunities, even though it is not directly compatible with win32. Patience and some skills needed, though.

  • @xXBlazeTheHedghogXx Nope, windows CE is not built on the windows 95 base.

  • fileserve . com / file/bx3DCCv / Games For Windows CE

games for windows ce games like doom duke nukem 3d ect

NO PASSWORD just remove the spaces in the link

  • buying link ?

  • @LittleGuy536 Trust me, you don't want to buy this thing. I just sold mine because I had no use for it. Save your money and get a real netbook instead. They're getting cheaper.

  • Looks like they skinned the old open source TCPMP and included it with the cheap netbook. It looks like you can get Android working on this device since it runs on ARM devices. Then you'd have more modern software to choose from if you could get Google's Marketplace working in Android.

  • Will it run Crysis 2?

  • @blakegriplingph FK NO! Sorry but i doubt it

  • @eSgRevolution - I was being sarcastic about it.

  • @blakegriplingph oh sorry): i didnt mean to ruin the joke its hard to tell sarcasm in text

  • Does it support booting from a flash drive. nbecause i installed Full windows xp on a 2gb hdd,

  • @rockerboy12doglover It can boot from an SD card, but not a USB stick. And remember, you need an operating system which supports its special CPU. Windows XP will **NOT** work on this netbook!

  • How do i update this. i have one. How can i update it! i just cant figure it out. the msi wont run in it.

  • @averyaccordion Follow the instructions on Sylvania's web site.

  • can i buy it from you ??

  • do you still have this ?? i it good for 60 bucks

  • @WinbookXL3 Yes, I still have it, but I don't really have a use for it, because it can't run any normal PC software. This is basically a toy computer, good for kids only.

  • Cool!Want One!!!!

  • You have a generic branded netbook in US,in Malaysia, there are also generic branded netbooks, which have the CSL brand.

  • @vwestlife Does the YouTube app still work? I have heard that its has stopped working because of YouTube's script change or something like that O.o??

  • @vwestlife how do you back up the programs themselves, like the document creator, to re-install after downloading the OS update, like you did?

  • @SkyPirate600 I saved the contents of the Program Files folder before the update, and then copied back the files of the missing programs after the update. Also look for the "Windows CE 6 Freeware" archive which contains many of these programs, and more. You can download it from the "sylvania_netbook" Yahoo Group.

  • @vwestlife also what does sylvania's wifi update do? thanks for ur answer in advance :)

  • @SkyPirate600 See the Sylvania Digital Gadgets web site for details and tutorial videos.

  • Comment removed

  • can you stil watch youtube on it as of this date today cuse iam buying one tommarow for this reason only thankyou

  • @neonegro12 Yes, but it will only play YouTube videos through the provided app, as I show in the video, not through the main YouTube web site.

  • i wonder, if the OS can be updated to win ce 6.0 - the oe i have seen runs win ce 5.0 ?

  • @m134mr This model comes with Windows CE 6.0 already.

  • Well done on that review.. I liked it! I think I will go pick one up just for the hell of it. I need something like that to run my main computer with internet as I suppose I could get a wireless card for it for the same price or a little cheaper but heck this will do the same thing with shared internet and more.

  • should i buy this?

  • @ShipmentReviews How am I supposed to answer that question? The world is not black and white. Everyone has different wants and needs and reasons for buying something. So watch the video, read the comments, and decide for yourself if the Sylvania netbook is worth buying. The more you are informed, the more wisely you will be able to spend your money.

  • @ShipmentReviews

    If you're a student, no.

If you're using a computer at work, no.

If you're surfing the internet, maybe, but you can't download squat.

    The Mouse buttons are retarded.

Windows CE blows and as far as I understand, compared to anything from 2001 to the present.

This should be good for a child's first computer... not much else imho.

  • It's amazing how this video actually cost me money, the song you played about the Firefiies is now in my iTunes library. haha

  • How many watts does it use at full power?

  • @pamperchu I haven't measured it myself, but other people claim it draws only 4 watts from the wall socket when using the AC adapter.

  • I´ve found something similar with a 600 MHz CPU and 128 Mb RAM. I just need to know whether this is good enough for a student. I don´t need to play games with it. I just need a tiny Netbook where I can create/open PDF, word, excel files. That would already be enough. This thing´s cute though.

  • @PatriotGermanEmpire As a student you will likely be required in your coursework to use applications and web sites which are not compatible with this netbook. I suggest saving up and getting a "real" laptop which can run Windows XP or Mac OS.

  • @vwestlife Thanks for your answer. I´ve been waiting for your answer but I can´t see on the main menu of youtube whether somebody replied to my questions/comments. I don´t know why but it doesn´t appear there. I don´t know whether I turned it off. Can you tell me how to turn it on again? I´m allready saving for a real Netbook (one of those Intel Atom 1.6 GHz 1 Gb Ram 160 Gb HDD Netbooks) which can run Windows XP or Linux. I´d prefer Linux though. It just runs better imo. Thumbs up.

  • Nice review!

  • @vwestlife lol, i was about to ask you what you were doing with a picture of a teenage boy.

  • hi i have one of these and when i try to log in to my yahoo facebook or ebay it always says page cannot be displayed, and on the taskbar it says server cannot be found. i bought it used. so i dont know if it needs an update. like the os update you described. please help me. also i cannot watch any youtube vids with the app. i tried one that was shown on a youtube vid but it say something about the vlc player

  • @Danielb20989 Try installing the OS Update as shown on the Sylvania Digital Gadgets web site. They also have new tutorial videos there on things like how to get the wireless Internet working.

  • @vwestlife Thank You. do you think it could be the wifi or maybe the os update.??or maybe i should do both. because it's kind of weird it only does that when i try to sign in to my accounts. IDK i wil try that though.

  • What is ARM compatible mean? what does ARM stands for.

  • @LTF85199 Look up "ARM architecture" on Wikipedia.

  • @vwestlife thanks

  • I just got mine, it works great, and I have had very few problems. It boots up fast and connects to the internet easily, both at home and at WiFi hot spots. Web pages default to the mobile versions to speed up web surfing. I added an 8GB SD card where I store pictures, music and video . The picture viewer works great, as does the Windows media player. Unfortunately, It can only handle fairly small videos. The small size makes it easy to carry around. It is small mobile and fun. Two thumbs up.

  • My brother uses one of those (with 256MB RAM and a 4GB SD Card) as a satellite navigation system in his car.

i've removed most of the junk software that came with it, added a USB GPS mouse and installed a navigation software intended for a PDA.

it's currently running "iGo" with that external USB GPS mouse and it works just fine.

it's basically a PDA in a netbook formfactor, so almost all software for PDAs runs on it :)

89$ satnav with media player, wifi and whatnot.. :D!

  • that looks really cool! i have an expensive netbook (samsung nc10) but i'm thinking about getting one of these cos they're just so cute and unique, would be quite fun!

  • How long does the battery last?

  • Does the WinRAR version for WinCE happily unzip files too? (As the WinRAR version for "normal" Windows does)

  • @adrianjcc Yes, it unZIPs too.

  • @duranmedine Windows XP (or any other desktop version of Windows) will not run on an ARM-type CPU, since it is not x86 compatible.

  • Yes, Windows CE is very reliable. It's hard realtime to the millisecond. And it is used in nuclear instrumentation.

  • N900 is better but then again does cost a bit more.

  • Looks like a good candidate for installation of a lightweight Linux like Knoppix or Puppy. Maybe Android? How about using the mobile Youtube site? Can you watch vids with an external player app like Totem?

  • @wx1gdave Android 1.5.x does run on these. There are videos demonstrating it. So far I've only been able to play YouTube videos through the provided app. When I go to the regular video page in IE, it complains about an invalid SWF file format, even though I have Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC installed.

  • @wx1gdave linux puppy could run very well on these. I had a packard belll pc with a pentium 2 processor (200 mhz), and (I think) 96 mb of ram. I was able to watch 480p youtube videos, use email clients... it was a nice backup computer.

  • I wonder if you can get Chrome OS running on one of these things. I've been wanting to try a new Chrome smartbook but 89 dollars is probably the max I would ever pay for one..

  • I've seen something like this at our local "maplins" store, sort of similar design running windows CE. did some research into it and found it had a MIPS based SoC and not an ARM one.

  • Mine gets almost 4 hours on a charge. YMMV though. Ive tinkered with it alot. It gets online and plays mp3's with cover art and thats all thatmatters to me lol.

  • So would this be considered a NetBook?

  • Very cool! I remember Windows CE and those "Pocket PCs" it ran on back in the 90s. Nice to see it again. Could probably get Linux on that like you said if you wanted a wider range of programs, but then its still limited by the hardware capabilities. The ARM processor is used in a lot of things; in my last video I looked at a school bus music system which runs on one.

Strangely enough there is no KMarts in the city I live in anymore.

  • Wow, that looks like it could be an actually useful machine, especially for the price! Contrary to most Chinese stuff it looks half-decently built too. I had no idea Windows CE was still in use or even updated/supported by Microsoft anymore. I thought the last update of it was like, 8 years ago, until I looked it up.

What kind of battery life do you get on that, anyway?

    Great video!

  • That's quite interesting. I read on the web that it is in fact a 400 mhz processor (overclockable to 533Mhz), and the SD card slot can read up to 32GB.

  • Interesting little laptop. I don't know if you are familiar with any of the versions of Linux, but Puppy Linux would probably run extremely well on that machine (puppy runs in RAM).

  • what is that song that you played to test out the earphone jack?

  • @jose60674790 X-Dreams - "Mary Ann" (1984)

  • This really is an interesting device, but what with all the interest in the Android platform and the iPad I have to ask how much longer will devices such as this be around for. I looked at these things on eBay this morning, I saw one which I suspect was the same model as this one, it was selling at a buy it now price of $999 US, utterly ridiculous. How easy is it to obtain the update for the generic unbranded versions of this device?

  • @Lachlant1984 An unbranded Windows CE netbook should be able to use the Sylvania OS update, because the hardware is all the same.

  • You still have K-Marts there. Wow, I haven't seen one is nearly a decade. :P

    Very through review. Awesome job!

I don't see why the developer of Photo Viewer needed to have it make a sound every time it loads a photo by default.

    Nice chuckle. :)

  • @pcwalker There is a Kmart on Fort Hood Street in Killeen. :-) However, many Kmarts have been changed into Sears Essentials or Sears Grand stores, after the merger of the two companies in 2004.

  • Is there a way to load xp on that? if so that would make a great way to shair files in a network with a usb harddrive.

  • @bigjake52 Windows XP (or 95, 98, 2000, etc.) will not work, because normal versions of Windows do not support the ARM-type CPU it uses. It should work with any USB storage device that is formatted as FAT32. I just tried an 8 gig USB memory stick and it works fine with the Sylvania.

  • How does PBSkids.org look on this machine? I'm thinking about getting one of there for my younger sister...

  • Thanks for making that review. I first became aware of these July 2010 when they were mentioned on Low End Mac. Back then, you could buy them for $37 (and $39 shipping!) from sellers in Hong Kong. It was suggested that they were ASUS factor seconds. I almost bought one then.

I don't know if anyone got Linux working or not, but Android definitely does to some extent. Unfortunately, the Wondermedia (VIA) CPU is soldered to a daughtercard with RAM, so there's no expansion for that.

  • Did these come with Office Mobile on them? If, not it greatly limits its usefulness. Also is it CE 6.1 or 6.5 on that? Install Opera Mobile, way better then Pocket IE for browsing. I guess the CPU in this isn't as good as my Omnia SCH-i910, that can at least play DivX out of the box. I wonder if I can rip the apps off my WM 6.1 phone and run them on this. The included apps on my phone seem light years ahead of the crap they put on this netbook.

  • @NJRoadfan It uses Windows Embedded CE 6.0. As-shipped, it came with WordPad, SpreadCE (an Excel-compatible spreadsheet), and SoftMaker Office (with its own word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation programs). The OS update wipes this out and replaces it with the CKE text editor, and utilities to view (but not edit) Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) files. It also has a PDF file viewer (both before and after the OS update). Opera Mini works fine on it.

  • You hear so much talk about Windows Mobile, but not so much about Windows CD per se, I know there's some sort of relationship between Win Mobile and Win CD, but I'm not too sure what it is. You know that computer isn't too bad for the price, but I've got to ask just how popular these things are and how long Win CD Netbooks will be around for before they disappear. It's very unique for what it is, are there other brands of these devices? It's very interesting, I think it's pretty cool.

  • @Lachlant1984 It's actually Windows CE, not CD. You can find these on eBay as ' 7" Mini Netbook ' or 'Windows CE Netbook ', with no brand name on them at all. Sylvania just puts their name on them and sells them in stores. BTW, I'm typing this comment from the netbook right now!

  • @vwestlife That's my typo, it is called Windows CE. I remember a friend had a Cassiopeia Pocket PC, I think the model was A11 or something like that, I think it ran Win CE 1 or 2, I can't remember, but it used 2 AA batteries. I suspect it was one of the first Pocket PC's, if not THE first. Didn't CassetteMaster make a video of a Sylbania stereo tuner? I assumed these units were generically made and just branded with different names.

  • Wow, cheaply made! Only 128MB RAM, no hard drive capacity shown, to slow for me

  • It looks like a nice "toy", but I would become very fustrated with the apps. It just seems very limited compared to a netbook. Sound quality isn't bad, probably the standard Realtec chip is in it.

I wonder if there's a version of Firefox or Google Chrome for CE. And it might make a decent retro gaming laptop if a CE version of Mame or Stella (Atari 2600) is available.

  • You should put jolicloud on that thing. it would work a lot better.
