Those puppies could have been saved, in any event. You can buy formula and bottles for kittens and puppies. A friend's cat abandoned her babies as soon as they were born. We bottle fed them, and they not only survived, they thrived. I just figured I'd mention this in case someone's faced with the same situation, and has no other options.

My chihuahua Charro nursed our kitten, Cleo, whom we found at the pumpkin patch during Halloween....she's never even had puppies! Cleo was only 3 weeks old when we found her, and when we brought her home Charro immediately started carrying Cleo around the house trying to hide her! Charro ended up raising her to approx 12-weeks of age, and they're still the best of friends. :D

Those animals will grow to love each other, and that's a really special thing. Usually cats and dogs instinctively dislike (not hate) dislike each other and won't "hang out". But since those were bred together they might feel like brothers and sisters. I really hope they will get to grow together. Seeing a dog and a cat as best friends is just too adorable and very special, in my opinion.
