At this point Billy is best appreciated for his influence. Without Billy Cobham there would be no Neil Peart, no Dennis Chambers, no Matt Sorum, etc., etc.
yamaha signature snare, really expensive. OH, and anyone who thinks he sucks is obviously ignorant of his 45 year contribution to music and drumming. He isn't as fast as he used to be. Listen to his solo on Stratus for speed and the fastest single stroke roll ever. Billy is a legend, and all real drumming fans honor his endless genius. One of the most important, influential drummers ever.
obviously you're just a fanboy. he was incredibly boring. the crowd didnt even get into it. the two stick thing was kinda cool but not that musically interesting. the whole time i waiting for him to take off and do something awesome and it just never happened.
@drjoha1990 I will admit this isn't my favorite Billy Cobham solo, but he is better judged by his work with Mahavishnu Orchestra, or even some of his other solos on youtube
The people that think that billy sucks need to check out his mahavishnu stuff.... some of the most ridiculous drumming of all time. He has influenced everyone after him.
As a set player and a percussionist I would love to set my kit from low to high (with the exception of one floor tom). It's odd switching from mallets and timpani to set because of the pitch reversal. Unfortunately, large toms are too cumbersome for myself over the bass drum
He dosent need to prove anything to any one hes always been better than peart bonzo lee or any rock drummer hes beyond todays music he simply the best.
He looks like he's just hitting random stuff and going crazy. But the sounds coming out of that kit is some of the most fluid and beautiful drumming I've ever heard.
THIS GUY HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST FEEL DRUMMERS EVER, HE WAS SO WELL KNOWN IN THE 70's LIKE PEOPLE FORGOT. HERE HE IS NOW, STILL CAN FEEL YOU UP. THANKS BILLY
well whats this about tapping him when he's in the middle of some intense creative work'. its a shame". absolute legend" inspiration personified" thats what Billy is". i don't need to say it, we all know it'.
I was wondering... Do drummers still get bashed on if they use double pedals or double bass? Like, one is better than the other, or if you use one particular, than you're a cheapskate? I dunno, but I've always seen people complaining about the two.
@HARON08 Some people prefer one to the other, but personally, I think it depends on the kind of SOUND you want. Two drums will def be louder and less prone to choking, yet the double pedal has a more consistent tone when it comes to tuning and also, is easier to transport. Unfortunately, there are some people who are stuck in the mindset that there is one supreme way to do everything when it comes to drumming and that all others are inferior and have no validity. That fact troubles me.
@MarvinSheats there when you make it look like your playing but no sound come out, or when you do light of note patters on the snare, like jazz stuff.
looks like his hats are going to chew through the finish on that big tom tom on his left side. oh well. he probably only played this kit once. wonderful solo too
Although I see it and hear it....I still can't quite figure out exactly what's going on when he does those signiture tom rolls. Someone please explain :) (roll at 2:05) Thanks!
Who agrees that Simon Phillips was influenced heavily by Billy. The ambidexterity, the super low hi hat, the kit set up, the amount of drums. I've seen 'em both in clinic & was blown away by their power. I was standing directly behind Billy once 25-30 odd years ago & he started to demolish his kit. Black Remo pinstripes were ripping out of the hoops while Louis Bellson and Steve Smith looked on in amazement trying to finish dueling and trading 8's and 16's. I had just bought Spectrum on vinyl.
@ThePbdrum yeah, maybe bc was the 1st but ive a couple people who do that: marco minnemen and vadrum [i think] on utube. bc seems a lefty but he can play trad l and r. these others seem rightys.
@ThePbdrum I always thought that was cool about him as well. He actually gave me some ideas/inspiration years ago when I had an electronic kit and how I had the triggers set up.
@ThePbdrum Yeah, it looks kinda cool. But I never understood why he aligned the rack toms like this. I just can't see the advantage of having the biggest tom on the left while the two other big drums (floor toms) are on the right side. Imagine doing a big fill using all toms from high to low.
@SimonBak90 It forces him to change the way he thinks when using the toms either melodically or in fills. Also, after playing drums for about 50 years, I'm sure he's over the idea of going from high to low.
who's that asshole that sits behind Billy and taps him at 5:09? He not only looks like he's bored at certain points, but he dares to tap him Billy while he's in the middle of something this douchebag wishes he could comprehend one day. Get him the hell outta there, what a dumbass.
