If someone has invested millions of dollars in a race horse, do you really think they're willing to let it become a Big Mac? They're put out to stud. I've seen pictures of wheelbarrows-full of dead greyhounds (with their ears cut off to eliminate the identifying tattoos). Where are the semi trucks full of dead horses? I don't think horseracing is humane either, but because dogs are 'cheaper' investments than horses, they are more expendable.

Racehorses that are not good racers are not put to stud, as obviously they are not genetically favourable. Yes, some racehorses are if they have good genetic lineage, but the same proportion of greyhounds are put to stud also, where do you think greyhound litters come from?

And obviously you have proved my point that the disposal of horses is much lower key, 'there are no semi trucks full of dead horses' that's exactly what im saying

The trouble is, greyhounds are not racehorses... they are not heavily invested in. If a dog is not fast enough, they are replaced. Some dogs are adopted, but others are not so lucky. Greyhound racing may seem safe and great for the dogs (who spend 20 or hours a day in a small 'crate' or wire kennel), but dogs die, and there is abuse, too. Greyhound racing needs to end.

Obviously they are able to run for play. There are many animal sports. In all of them there are the majority who treat the animals humanely, and the morons who abuse them. There are people who abuse children, too. Shall we outlaw families?

You realize that if you are successful in closing down any animal sport or usage, that the animals in that activity will rapidly be put to death. Does that make you humane? Or just another Moron?

@ldygwedion A lot of greyhounds who are given up end up in veterinary surgeries as blood donors, where they are kept in small kennels and have blood taken from them periodically. Do you think this is better for the dog then living in a racing situation? And i'm sure the 'doggy things' you are referring too are all anthropomorphous actions, no dog, unless its in the wild, does what a dog is supposed to do.

Also i would think Hare coarsing is a lot worse when they are allowed to run through thorn bushes and the thorns cut in to their muscle because they have very little body fat.

All hare coursing meetings in Ireland are run under strict rules by the ICC and are fenced off.

Maybe a bit of research before you make comments such as running greyhounds through thorn bushes, rabbits have nothing to do with this at all.

Whilst i am not big on racing greyhounds (even though they like running) i can't seem to find the idea of being stuffed in a small race trap fun. Any way as for the abuse thing. It's only the few idiots that mistreat the poor animals and then expect them to win races that need to be dealt with. However ther are people in the racing industry who know how to look after the dogs, they are the ones who will get results. A greyhound could be abused weather they are racing or not. Problematically, the abuses and mistreatment of greyhounds being referenced here are very unusual and rare. It's simply not accurate to say that greyhound racing has significant track record of animal abuse. lmakely is upset and indignant over the very concept of animal abuse, which is fine, but it's not realistic to then assume that isolated cases of its occurance are indicative of the sport as a whole.

But, they are only allowed to do that a very small % of the time, most of the time they are crated. running is not the problem and you all know that. got a dog in with a severly broken leg. not uncommon. just left there, no food, no h2o. you guys just DON'T care. yes, that dog was one of the lucky ones, and he is doing well after his very expensive surgery in case you're wondering. as far as the greyhound ind. finding homes for 20,000 a year is lie!.

Get off the soapbox and realize that eliminating an entire industry which generates a great deal of money isn't the way to stop abuse to Greyhounds. We all know that smoking has no positive long term effects but there is no way that will ever be abolished. Why? It makes money. It keeps people employed.

Im from ireland and over here when a dog is retired from racin we keep them and let them live their lives out we dont shift them off to homes and no greyhound owner would send their dogs into these homes with broken limbs dont degrade us

i fully support dog racing, but not the industry itself, i think that dog racing should be allowed but the industry needs to change, the only thing is that people aren't going to become less money orientated over time, until money itself is gone. but i dont agree with banning something because some dogs are mistreated, the vast majority in this country are treated well. Racing greyhounds are the only dogs allowed to be dogs. They are raised with their littermates, learn true pack behavior, and do what they love to do best: run and chase all day. They are not raised like 4-legged humans, so they don't learn to compete with humans in a household. I've helped adopt out hundreds of greyhounds since 1994, and the abused/neglected ones we adopted out were one removed from adoptive home. They didn't come from race kennels.
