@VigilanteAgumon To be fair there's no such thing as a "real" Christian in the modern world. Just different denominations with varying degrees of adherence to the bible. In the end they all compromise in the name of 'modernity' ;)
@truvianni Someone who lives by Jesus' teachings as closely as possible. So someone who believes divorce and remarriage should be punishable by eternal hellfire. Someone who says it's better to gouge out your own eye than to look at someone with jealousy. Someone who believes it is better to live in poverty than comfort. Someone who believes in exorcism and evil spirits. In short someone who actually believes the New Testament.
@megamarsvin well again that is all a point of view some might see their way as being close to Jesus and in short there are many ways of interpreting the new testament and living by it. I am an agnostic who accepts all believes as being possibilities and basically does not care either way if there is a god or not as it makes no difference to me but like I said many things depend on how we perceive them
@truvianni I'm just saying, that's how it is if you read the bible. I'm agnostic myself, it's not skin off my nose either way but I've read quite a bit of the New Testament out of interest and Jesus himself doesn't really mince words. He's very much a "my way or the highway" kind of prophet ;)
@megamarsvin I have read the bible, all of it so I know about it but I believe after reading the bible that god (if he really exists is evil) and only created humanity to torture it, I even write articles about this. If you want to read them google "Truvianni,God" and you will see. My points of view are too complicated to explain here
Absolutely great. A great clip from a great series, made in a time when british comedy was witty and observant and not the nihilistic degrading rubbish that it is today!
@ThePsychedelicMoose Yeah, I'm not trying to go with the "its only a theory", that was my fault for saying that. I'm just saying that not everything said out there is 100% fact and true, there are lies and there will always be lies. Just take the electricity problem, where they said positive charges are the ones that move, that was taken for fact and in reality, its the negative charges that move, mistakes, especially big ones can be made.
I want to drop my theory argument, cos like you said
@ThePsychedelicMoose Uhm, bad example on theory of gravity because actually, gravity may not be a force at all but it may actually be due to a warp in space-time :P
I don't fully agree with evolution, I don't think we evolved from something else, although some aspects are interesting.
I know that there are a some links but I'm not fully convinced, it was bad on my part saying it was theory, I must have been tired (And I am now haha, its a bit late here :P)
I dont know about modernist, but I am certainly an atheist. Why would I want to worship a non existent tyrannical dictator like the god of the Bible, Koran and Torah.
@roac7777 Indeed, the Sermon on the Mount, had it been a government report, should certainly not have been published. A most irresponsible document; all that stuff about the meek inheriting the Earth could do irreperable damage to the defence budget.
@roac7777 Are you trying to start a flame war here?
I love yes prime minister as it is humourous and quite accurate.
But I disagree with your comment, God who is a creator cannot possibly be a tyrant, its a shame you have such hatred for religion especially considering that it does no harm.
@TheGrinningSkull The war started years ago when the depraved and immoral teachings of religion first infected the human race. Religion is devisive, fraudulent, stops independent thinking and is dangerous.
@roac7777 It certainly does not stop independent thinking, Islam (I can only speak for Islam) asks for seeking knowledge and constantly learning and doing work for society. Working is important in the eyes of Islam.
I don't think religion is dangerous at all, its just the people who are in it that can be dangerous. Like what happened with the race issue, black people are not dangerous, you have the minorities and these minorities got a lot of media and public attention. now its on religion
@TheGrinningSkull You are entitled to your opinion, I disagree entirely. Its not just the terrorists. Look at Saudi Arabia, the largest women's prison on earth. Islam's treatment of women and homosexuals is appalling. It is immoral to wish to be a slave to a non existent sadistic, homophobic, gynaephobic, capricious celestial dictator, eg: the god of the Bible, Koran and Torah.
I accept and believe in science, reason and secular law.
@roac7777 You too are entitled to your opinion :) , however, the laws in Saudi are based on Islamic misconceptions and also, based on traditional and local laws than Islam. Some of the laws like women not being allowed to drive are just stupid as it does not make any sense at all, its local law, not based on Islamic rulings.
Islam also prides in seeking scientific knowledge and learning, its very important.
@TheGrinningSkull Its not just Saudi. How is it moral to make women cover up? To stone single women to death for having a private sex life, to stone women to death for adultery, to kill men just for being homosexual. Like most religions, Islam is sexually repressive and oppressive. I believe it is also the death penalty for a muslim who wishes to become an apostate. Regarding science, why do muslims reject evolution?
@roac7777 Most of what you mentioned are misconceptions, it says nowhere in the quran that women must wear a viel, it also says nothing about a death penalty for commiting adultry, those are local laws and nothing to do with Islam. Islam has punishments, but not to death for the crimes you mentioned about sex.
Regarding science, there are a few scientific facts mentioned in the quran centuries before they were discovered, and the probability of guessing these is very low.
@roac7777 As for evolution, its still a theory right? Meaning it hasn't been proven fully, I really don't believe that human evolved from other creatures, however, some things did interest me like the mutation of the moth (where their colout changed from white to black) in the 1950s to blend with the urban industrial sooty environment and the mutation of some rats to become resistant to warfarin.
When you stand back and look at the world and universe, its just magnificent. Every detail of it.
@TheGrinningSkull NO, evolution is not a theory it is fact. The word theory in scientific term means, something that is substantiated after research. You are mistaking the every day use of the word with the scientific meaning. Look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary. We are all here because of evolution through natural selection. We primates share the same ancestor as modern day apes. This ancestor lived around 6 million years ago. Look up human evolution.
I second OrangeKarl7's motion, I may not be a so-called 'modernist' but I do believe that having a Church/State intimacy on the level of the CoE is a bit much...
This entire episode (one should see it in total) tells us 100% why government cannot run the Church or be tied to it. And why clergy should never be so cozy with government. Anywhere. The Church of England, as it is not independent, in no way serves its rightful purpose. And the big losers are: Everyone, frankly. Even if you do not believe. Great to see how this show always points out the utter follies of Big Government and egotistical leadership.
For a man of religion to command respect from his people, he has to be a sort of superhuman. In Japan, there are a few monks who put themselves under some very harsh training, so harsh that it can be almost life threatening. Once they complete such training successfully, they receive certain titles and continue to lead very religious lives which most people won't be able to survive.
The show was taped in front of a live audience. I laughed at the line too, though it's hard to tell you why it's funny. I guess it has something to do with the cynical, light-hearted approach to matters usually considered weighty, as well as the delivery. Hacker obviously found his own joke very funny, though it's a pretty poor joke. And surprisingly, Humphrey seemed to like it too, and his 'Very droll, minister' was honest, for once.
Can you guys take this discussion elsewhere, your taking up all the comment slots, really please... hehe
