Pity Agassi didn't take his tennis so seriously early in his career. He gained quite a bit back 1992-1995, but then went away for almost 3 seasons after winning Olympic gold in Atlanta. I shudder to think how many slams he could have won had he been as professional as Sampras and done his work earlier!
@johnjohns65 No, he quit drugs in 1998. You are so out of the loop. Get with the program, loser. He runs the best college prep school in Las Vegas now. He founded it.
@dura1mater Hit a good shot like that and what are you going to do, give the standing ovation a finger? Come on man, have some common sense. I think it's the appropriate thing to do. Even the guy he hit it on could do nothing but smile; that's how good the shot was...
@cleanplasticchild His dad is Iranian so he is partly, yes. His dad was an Olympic boxer I believe, and his mom is American. Iranian pride right there.
@darQrrR I respectfully disagree. I've seen MANY players pull tweeners (including Agassi). I've never seen any other player hit this shot for a winner. To me, that speaks to the difficulty of this shot and to hit it right in the corner with that type of velocity? I rank this as the best shot I've ever seen, hands down.
sure do miss watching him play. the best tennis player their ever was. he made the most amazing shots even when he wasnt looking. didnt just have one weapon in his arsenal. Like this new guy who has just his strong forehand nothing else.
Samprasisthebest...you must be pretty young, Borg was an international superstar the likes that Tennis had never seen. Not taking anything away from Agassi. I cried when watching this as it happened but you clearly have no clue whatsoever about how popular Bjorn Borg was. I'm hoping you're just young and ignorant. :-)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I played competitive tennis in high school and used to hit this shot once in awhile. The "tweener" (between the legs) is a MUCH tougher shot for me. I think it is for just about everyone when hit well.
Ummmm.... No. High school tennis is nowhere close to semi-pro. And what the hell is "semi-pro" anyways? James Blake is one of the few to even make it big on the ATP tour after college. If you go to college, that pretty much means you won't become pro.
I've played in Futures, with guys ranked in the 700-900s. And I was top 10 in the PacNorthwest as a junior. I was lucky to get 1 or 2 games off those guys, and they're the lowest pros in the world.
grande, la penso anche io come te, mcenroe per me è sopra tutti, ma poi c è andreino che ci ha fatto divertire per altri 15 anni dopo il ritiro di supermac!!!ciao
You cannot be serious. Where are all the fangirls that are melting over Agassi/Sampras in the stands? It's because there weren't any. Crowds went nuts over Borg.
Just because Borg made more girls horny doesn't mean he was anywhere near the legend Andre was. Like prod1gy3000 said, Andre and Pete resurrected this sport from the abyss that Borg lead it into.
@AceGuitarR7 Yes, Brad Gilbert noticed that when Andre played at Stratton in '86 too. Center-cut Andre. Andre's life was all or nothing like Bobby Fischer's. There's only one thing Andre could do by age 18. Same with Bobby. And both were ranked number one in the USA, in their field, by age 18. Chess & tennis. That's why Andre's wrist injury was so serious around '93.
I've never knew what the buzz was about with Agassi but now I believe this guy is good. Though it would be nice to see some of his actual matches. i'll search youtube later. =D Amazing shot though. You don't see many pros make shots like that these days. Federer is amazing but not nearly as exciting as the well known pros in the 80s.
I agree with kaash83. Agassi might only a have 8 or 9 slams, but don't forget he won on ALL 4 SURFACES; something only the great Rod Laver accomplished. I put him ahead of Sampras right next to Federer (depends on how Fed ends his career).
actually 5 people have won a career grand slam including Agassi. however, Agassi is the only man to have achieved a Career Grand Slam by winning on at least three different surfaces. I think Laver, Perry, Budge, and Emerson all won only on grass though, but still amazing. Laver was amazing cause he won two calendar grand slams not just career grand slam.
I don't care who wins the most Grandslams or who is titled the GOAT, cuz there never ever will be any tennis player more loved than this man right here. Andre is a true legend and will forever be the most loved man to step out on the tennis court, past or present.
He us nowhere near the top list as far as number of grandslams is concerned, hell he hasnt even spent that much time as #1 player in the world....but i doubt there's anyone that would disagree on the fact that Agassi is the biggest star tennis has ever produced.Yes, thats right...Andre is the most popular, entertaining, and humble tennis player in history of this sport. Greatest returner off all time, that went from a rebel to a positive role model over his long career.....True Legend indeed.
Actually hes tied for 4th place for total grand slams in the open era. Thats pretty close to the top of the list. Only Borg, Federer and Sampras have more.
Awesome. Agassi at his finest. You may not like the bow, but tens of thousands of fans certainly liked it. Always play to the crowd, not to the internet naysayers.
