  • In order to be a planet a body has to check three boxes in it's paperwork to be a resident in our solar system.

    1. It must be round. The round shape of the planets is caused by the force of gravity which doesn't allow them to be any other shape once it's reached a threshold. Pluto checks this box.

    2. It must be the primary body orbiting the sun. That is to say it cannot be a moon of a larger body. Pluto also checks this box.

  • 3. It must have enough gravity to clear the path of its orbit of other bodies. Pluto does not check this box until it collects the Kuiper belt objects in their entirity.

Add the facts that Pluto is more than half composed of ice, would grow a 100 million mile long tail if it entered the inner solar system, has a much more eccentric orbit than any of the 8 planets, and has more in common with every other Kuiper belt object than it does with the rest of the solar system and you get the truth.

  • Pluto is a comet.

  • I like the debate, it makes people research pluto...

  • o.O erm... what about Dysnomia, Makemake, Haumea and its two "Moons", Varuna, Quaoar, Orcus, and Sedna... don't they too deserve "Planet Status"

Lets step back a minute here, its still a planet, only now its called a "Dwarf Planet" or small planet. Nobody seemed to complain when we called it the "Smallest"

    People need to grow up...

  • @hutchings000 You need to grow up and learn some things. The astronomers set up a rule saying that except everything you said , a planet ALSO needs to have enough gravity force to pull away any other object in the around it in the space.

  • @AnGrYGrEeKGuY

Erm? Your comment isn't that clear. I don't think pluto should be considered a "Planet" it makes no difference to me.

And Haumea has two moons, so... your comment further confuses me.

I say people need to "Grow up" because the response to a change of definition seems quite childish.

  • @hutchings000 There is a small but still difference betwen "moon" and "rubish in the space".Moons have gravity force to resistance to the planets , when some other asteroids and other things out in the space just dont have gravity at all.

  • @AnGrYGrEeKGuY

What are you arguing here? That pluto should be classified as a planet? If so, I agree with you. If not, then fine, call it a planet if you like, I'll just continue calling it a "Small Planet" or in other words, a "Dwarf Planet"...

I was only trying to illustrate the absurdity of the issue...

  • of all the things to protest over, war, foreign policy, oil drilling, deforestation, colonisation, they chose this.... my faith in mankind has just sank to a new low

  • pluto is not a planet you people have no sense if you believe is a planet.

  • PLUTO IS A PLANET!!!! Dwarf planets are planets too, you know!!!! listen to the ending: PLANETTT!! Stupid science needs to leave our Pluto alone!! :(

  • @UndercoverAgentD Stupid science is the one that gave you food , stupid science is the one that let you live , stupid science is the one that keeps you warm . There IS a difference betwen a planet and a dwarf planet. It's like SMALL WEAPONS and BIG WEAPONS , they have MANY differences betwen them

  • this protest was pretty freaking weak.

  • I like how no one uses facts to back up WHY they believe Pluto should still be a planet.

Oh and nice job using a picture of the cartoon dog Pluto to help convice people that it's still a planet. Maybe we could prove the existence of Bigfoot with a picture of the monster truck?

  • @sanctusdead people are stupid.

  • who really gives a shit

  • screw the person who said pluto is not a planet. next they will be saying that jupiter is not a planet because it's too big.

  • Objects in space must meet certain requirements to be categorized as a planet.

    1. They must have a moon.

    2. They must be a certain size.

Since Pluto is not big enough, it can't be a planet.

But with that said, Mercury doesn't have a moon.

What do you think, blade1550? It confuses me.

  • having a moon does not grant an object planetary status. learn what the definition of a planet is.

  • you don't understand the definition of a planet

  • @blade1550 and why does it matter what its called, its still there, so no one really cares what its classifications.

  • @blade1550 YOU ARE OFFICIALY STUPID !!!!!!

If you DONT know something KEEP YOU MOUTH SHUT !!!!!

  • @blade1550 sorry for being to offensive by the way , didnt mean to.

  • @blade1550 So... how many planets are there in our solar system? At least ten by your logic, maybe 15?

  • Keep your definitions off our celestial bodies!
