  • I find it curious, even pathetic, you don't see overseas chefs competing on ICA, when ICJ brought on all challengers. Siegal won over the Japanese critics because he had talent.

Food can break the language (racist) barrier with a qualified chef. Of course, that requires chefs that think ICA is the appropriate forum.

  • @CynicalGenius There's been a few foreign chefs on ICA. And honestly, ICJ doesn't bring in that many foreign chefs other than from China.

  • This shows that with Japanese people, even if they come off rude, or arrogant, they still uphold their honor, and are honest without any gimmicks.

  • The "I wasn't expecting much from him" is so incredibly rude. Even a child would have enough sense to know better than to say this. The Japanese have accomplished so much and then people like this just have to ruin it for everyone and make them look like a bunch of xenophobic, rude, stupid people.

  • @robotpanda77 I don't think it was very rude at all. She was being open and honest. They didn't know his skill, and he was up against Sakai, a very talented chef. I personally prefer people to be honest with me, even if it's harsh. :)

  • @CrystalChord2010 She is implying that she did not expect much from him because he is an American chef as is clearly illustrated by their other comments. The Japanese people have done many great things but for them to be racist against whites and America just makes them look stupid. We invented air travel, television, the internet and countless other things including youtube. If they want to act like they are better they are in for a serious wake up call.

  • @robotpanda77 Well, I think they did get a wake up call with Chef Siegal, I think. ♥ He did very well, and I'm glad he surprised them. :)

  • 0:13-0:30 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID

  • congratulations on that win Ron Siegel over Hiroyuki Sakai. i would have love to see him battle with the other Iron Chefs but that will never happen now. Iron Chef America is ok but it no where near Ryōri no Tetsujin(Iron CheF) was.

  • He didn't look too excited about winning...

  • Anyone beating Sakai in a sweep is consider the candidate of best chef in the world even though Sakai's Achille's heel is lobster.

  • It's seems there is a prejudice against Americans in the cooking world or maybe it was the Japanese Judges.

  • @picjusbro I think there was a bit of racism on the side of the Japanese judges, but I think some of that is the fact that Siegel is an American chef specifically.

Up until the 2000's, American chefs didn't have much respect on the world stage. It's been mostly remedied today in that America now has Chefs respected worldwide, but that wasn't the case in the 90's. Siegel was not only working against the insular nature of the Japanese, but the poor reputation of US Chefs at the time.

  • One of the greatest battles in Iron Chef history!

  • "when i first put it in my mouth, I thought, o this is just ordinary" hahahahahaha

  • Wow, didn't realize this was a sweep! Siegel took it to Sakai on his home turf!

  • what the heck where are the usual judges

  • i really like the outcome of this battle, even though I usually root for the one that lost...haha trying not to spoil it.

  • "bisque for the 21st century"... Wtf is that supposed to mean?! Is a no nothing trying to pretend to sound like some sophisticated gastronome?

  • "His dishes have taught me a lesson...", and after that speech, look at the chairman's face....PRICELESS! lol...

  • these judges are really close minded

  • Siegel is what Iron Chef America needs to be taken seriously. He's quiet, humble, yet extremely skilled and precise, unlike Bobby Flay.

  • Another thing, the chefs in ICJ are so humble when they win. No high fives or cheering. Just hand shakes, smiles and bows. ICA, way too arrogant.

  • :18 "when i first put it in my mouth, i thought..oh! this is just ordinary"...... and yes folks, that is what she said. :D

  • good job american!!

  • Chef Ron Siegel should compete on Iron Chef America.

    Siegel vs Morimoto!

  • lol its funi, his interview XDD im jus glad i beat sakai...and yeah u know, i beat him... XD u can tell he's sorta surprised i think lol

  • "Best taste buds?"...."Quite good?" wow. I didn't expect those judges to say that. Buddy, you can't even taste real hot food XD

  • He's so much more humble, noble and more skillful that Bobby Flay from the look of it.

  • I agree with you Julalaxsa, nothing against Bobby Flay, but he lacks personality. Ron might not be overwhelmingly charasmatic but theres something about him that draws me to him. Ron is unique.

  • Sean Penn will play Ron in "Iron Chef The Movie"...

  • The first American to beat an ORIGINAL Iron Chef. You are the man, RON!!!!

  • Mr.Kato

    R.I.P.

  • I really want to go to Napa valley now.

  • "when i first put it in my mouth"....CLASSIC!!!

  • Spoilers follow below this comment.

  • Iron Chef Sakai has an advantage for knowing the taste of the judges, and he has won most of his battles by a landslide.

To think an American won over Iron Chef Sakai is ironic but soo surprising. The Judges didn't expect much from him because he was american, thats soo mean but he made those japanese judges shut up. Its not what culture they are, its what they bring onto the dish from their culture or style. Gooo SIEGEL!!!

  • Dude, ron is the fucking man

  • Siegel > Flay.

Flay has his own assistants on ICA and he STILL can't win half his battles. Some "Iron Chef".

  • It's not arrogant just thinking positive of course if you want to face them again you want to win. If he said he will surely beat then you can say that it's arrogant and if he said he will 100% sure beat them that's the time you can say that he's way too arrogant... :)

  • Arrogant? what about the way he was treated- with the judges saying they didn't expect much from him based solely on how he looks. I applaud him for saying what he said.

  • yes i have to agree with this

  • The judges make me uncomfortable, as a Japanese.

"We Japanese have the best tongue in the world" oh man... give me a break.

I don't think that guy even worths being a judge.

    I feel embarassased.

  • @sjtaku I admire how humble you are :]

  • WOW, he beat the KING of iron chefs! :] I usually want sakai to win, but i am happy for siegal.

  • i know ron!!!! he made chili for the 2009 superbowl and it was gooood

  • lmao 8:01 "and I look forward to beating him either him again or another one of them"

  • Regarding my prior comment, the guy with 5 dishes, 4 commented on, is Siegel.

  • What the hell? He had 5 dishes according to video 4/5, but now they only commented on 4?

  • wow an AMERICAN with no ego beat an iron chef i'm impressed and from the san fran bay area WHOOHOO sorry to thoses who hate spoilers

  • About the battle though. Siegel picked a tough opponent, the ingredient was ambiguous, and the language barrier took away whatever slight advantage American vs. French lobster may have given the Challenger. The dishes presented were somehow both similar and vastly different. Excellent battle from both an eye-opening cross-Continental stereotype and from an Iron Chef/foodie viewpoint.

    Bravo to the uploader. :)

  • It's less ignorance than arrogance. Honestly, I'm glad this episode was posted. It shows that Americans have sophisticated palates and kind of, no offense, takes the Japanese down a peg on their pretentious views of their own palates. It shows that just because someone's taste and traditions in food are different doesn't make them any less refined or skilled. Regardless of geographical and cultural differences, people are people. Every ethnicity has its good and bad. :)

  • Of course. We all (at least most of us) get your point. However, you just contradicted your point when you said "Japanese down a peg on their pretentious views of their own palates." Somehow, I find it hard to believe that being Japanese would automatically cause someone to hold pretentious views. Perhaps it came out wrong, but if that was what you really meant, I doubt that you wouldn't be offending people even if you meant no offense.

  • Yes, I didn't mean to go stereotyping myself, and I apologize because it did come across as such. The insensitive comment I made was supposed to only refer to those on the show and posting comments on the Iron Chef videos who are being pretentious and saying that Japanese have the most refined palates and cuisine, traditions and cultures, etc. It was most certainly not meant to encompass all Japanese people nor to offend anyone.

  • lol Ron looked kind of pissed after the women said they weren't expecting much from him. I assure you, not all of us Japanese are as ignorant as they are. They make me ashamed of my country.

  • I don't think you should be ashamed, the fact he won and changed their minds, plus the style of american lobster is so radical that during prep they probably were a little worried about what he was doing, but in the end the taste said it all, shame for Sakai though his dishes were amazing too

  • Yes, Sakai is the best Iron Chef imo.

  • yeah man, its really rude and an asshole thing to say about someone who is so highly skilled

  • is it just me, or does anyone else notice that we never see the judges taste ron's lobster ravioli with corn sauce?

during tasting, they go from the avocado salad right to the dish with the port reduction.

we watched him roll and fill the pasta, and during the presentation segment, it was one of his 5 finished dishes.

i know it's all in the past, but i think that of all his dishes, that one was a huge contributing factor to his victory, and it's kind of a shame that it's been cut out.

  • probably cut out in the editing process, show is only an hour ya know :)

  • the italian iron chef is MY FAVOURITE!!!

  • Welcome to the Bay!

  • finally the iron chef iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai lose a battle.

  • This is the first time I've seen a challenger win. His dishes must've been really good! At first I wasn't sure what to think when the women said they didn't expect him to be that great but after a while, I appreciated their honesty. Great battle.

  • it amazes me how much racisism is found in these iron chef videos comments.....

  • I don't mean to sound Xenophobic, but...

    USA! USA! USA!

No, this was a great battle, and I LOVE the Japanese Iron Chef. It is probably the greatest cooking show ever.

  • IT IS THE GREATEST SHOW

  • 1st time in japan and he won.

  • seigel is awesome, poor sakai though, third time losing on lobster battle (he gotta hate lobster now lol) but that just make the show more interesting, seeing the iron chefs always win make it boring and kinda unfair. Love the show. Both sakai and seigel are great. sakai only 4 points behind, 1 point from each judge

  • HAHAHAHAHA..."I look forward to beating them again!" You gotta realize that wasn't all the guy said, he obviously answered a lot of questions but the producers are certainly going to cut in the most stereotypical american bit of the interview. don't bag on the guy...

  • I agree with forza599...they went out of their way to make Seigel look like a jerk. I love the show though...Im sure Seigel is a really good guy.

  • Man.. I'm a proud American but there's no way to take that one out of context. Dude's kind of a prick any way you slice it.

  • I was at the taping on assignment for a Bay Area newspaper. The producers had me sit in on that "press conference" at the end to do my interview on camera w/Siegel, and he was quite humble with his responses. (None of that was aired.)

After we were finished with our pretty extensive Q & A, they then coached him in what they wanted him to say — entirely different in tone from his and my chat. That's why his speech sounds a little awkward: he was trying to remember what they'd told him to say...

  • Stop making excuses for their ignorance you fool.

  • You say that as though you've never won a high stakes competition. The chefs have their reputations on the line when they compete, of course one could honestly have a swollen head after winning. I didn't sense any kind of hostility in what he said or any '*grr* me big American smash competition,' as you seem to think there is.

  • you are the low class scum, learn how to spell "live" since you spell it "leave" lol...idiot...

  • What you fail to recognize is that Ron's in a different country, in a setup he's never worked with, with assistants who he's never met before much more worked with AND a language barrier. He's not being racist, he's being what he is, a person in a country that's not his own.

  • I loved this episode! I've never heard the judges praise an opponent's dishes so much without a single negative remark. Poor Sakai. What was up with the musician's hat? Wish I could've tried the food. The judges were so funny talking about how they hadn't expected much, and their new realization that Japanese taste buds might not be the best.

  • Come on, people. Ron Seigel is a chef. He is not a person who does interviews or is in front of the camera constantly. To accuse him of having no tact or to call him arrogant is ridiculous. You could see he was very nervous being in front of the camera and talking to the press so he just said things that came to mind.

Get off his back and stop being so damn smug.

  • I do think Japanese people have exceptional taste though. Especially in food presentation!

  • it's not a lack of humility, it's just a competitive spirit. And it would be naive to say "Japanese people" have exceptional taste, more than any other race. This panel seems particularly, sadly disillusioned and flat out naive, in regards towards the greatness of cuisine from America. Especially the man who looks like a pirate.

  • its also quite amusing they're so impressed with a royale cooked in an egg shell. To be impressed is fine, but to show such a haughtiness and arrogance of the royale "that would be served in a top japanese restaurant" is sadly delusional and much ado about nothing

  • lol you crack me up. the pirate looking guy is kaga. haha

  • definately not an ass like bobby flay. and even though he said he looked forward to "beating" the iron chefs again, it doesnt seem like he was being arrogant in the way he said it.

  • You know, I love this show, and I have been watching so many of the episodes lately! Thanks so much for uploading them. In this one, I think that the challenger had to overcome a real handicap in the language- but he showed a remarkable lack of tact and diplomacy in his interview at the end.

  • agreed. i misread your comment and was shocked at his arrogance and lack of humility after the win.

  • Ron's gonna get better he still got most of his life ahead of him!

  • Archo, thanks.

  • whats noticible for me is the oriental vs western response to victory/defeat. here all ron talked about was his victory and how he would relish beating the other chefs. sakai and the other oriental chefs always praise the battle and opponent win or lose. the oriental graciousness is truley admirable in my humble opinion. thanks archo for great uploads. inspiring!

  • Nobody is better than the other. Just different according to where they live. Life in the USA is not the same as Japan. Japan is almost entirely Japanese people. The USA is so diverse that people have different attitudes. I would not really qualify anything as broadly as "oriental" and "western." Europe is very different from the USA as much as Vietnam is from Japan.

  • Oh Cmon now. That really makes it sound like everybody is like that from those respective countries. Remember Inoue from the Stingray challenge?

  • sakai is my fav iron chef! hez so smiley and cute, even when he didnt win =) a gracious loser ^^

  • I remember reading that IC Chin was in the studio at the time (waiting for his taping), and he was practically licking the challenger's plates after this - this is a testament to Siegel's skills during this match.

  • From Wikipedia: Flay has said in interviews that he was asked by show producers to play up an ugly American stereotype.

It was what Flay himself said, though there is no confirmation that this was the case or not.

  • Truly great works of Picasso!

    siegal's very artistic!

    Yet so modest!

    I've seen Bobby's shows; he's pretty flamboyant.

Don't think the producers of Iron Chef would ask him to appear that way.

As for the Iron Chef assistant; whn foreigners appears. They do have english speaking assistants & translators. Most Japanese do learn English just that they don't speak it that often. It's same as in France; English understandable but not widely spoken.

  • Please dont compare Ron with Bobby. I somehow doubt the producers DID tell Bobby to play an arrogant american and even if they did, they would NEVER tell him to stand on a cutting board which made him look more like an idiot. Ron shows class. Bobby is probably that way without even being told to be.

  • of course he won. They were cooking european food.

  • Watching this one, I keep thinking about how different it was from Bobby Flay's battle. The Iron Chef producers asked Flay to appear as an arrogant American, even stepping on the cutting board. They let Siegel be polite and courteous. I wonder why.

Anyway, great battle. Both chefs are amazing. Thanks archo89.

  • I think it's because Bobby Flay is from New York while Ron is from San Fran that they make Bobby the arrogant one plus that is usually the stereotype most people outside the US have of New Yorkers. Just a guess.

  • you been to new york?? new yorkers are arrogant and loud. lol

  • i'm allergic to shellfish, and i probably would gag on 85% of the dishes made on this show. thanks for the post archo, splendid as always!

  • Ouch, you're missing out!

    I would die!

  • From what I recall from the time, Siegal felt frustrated because his assigned kitchen assistants could not speak any English, or understand his directions. Siegel rocked, as did Sakai-san. Watching the best of the best battle out with my favorite food--it can't get better than this!

  • That was a great battle. Although Sakai is my favorite Iron Chef, I feel the battle was won fairly.

  • i agree. Siegal is the better 'french chef'

  • /cheer for the US!

  • astonishing

  • This was an amazing battle. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, Leon. I couldn't sleep, so this was an excellent surprise.

  • i agree i could go to sleep and this was such a good episode!
