He sure does hit the nail on the head. Remakes suck. it's all gorier, bloodier, more nudity, and as much as they can do that wasn't over killed in the originals.
Bay needs to die in a massive explosion.... I like the whole tarantino/rodrigeuz grindhouse esque cinema... death proof wasnt all that , but robert rodriguez's Planet Terror is a dumb classic.............. remaking texas chainsaw massacre is a crime against humanity
whats wrong with the remake = the new school of american actors, it's the hills 'oh my god' generation, were everyones stupidly beautiful and vacous. You cant relate to these people, If the remake was made on old 35mm and got normal looking actors, that acted like real people, and the script was not a laughing stock, it could of worked. Of course this would never happen because of the words hollywood and micheal bay
what was so suspenceful on the 1st one, was, that u were trying to figure out who was doing the murders...the bummer part was, the person doing the murders was introduced in the 10 to 15 minutes of the film.

Kermode's reasoning is flawed ,as per usual. What a pompous windbag he is; he truly believes his own nonsense. Friday the 13th was designed to cash in on the Halloween slasher craze, and was supposed to be a mainstream commercial movie, not a grindhouse in a plush theater. Just because it was gory and nasty doesn't make it so. In any case, one would almost wish for Jason Vorhees to take an axe to kermode's skull, but I doubt he'd find much grey matter inside.
@gingerbreadface A little hostile there man :p. I think that Kermode's point is that the slasher craze itself was obviously descended from grindhouse roots (HALLOWEEN was an exploitation movie that struck mainstream gold), and Wes Craven himself has said that Cunningham's interests were more in shock value than in anything else, a grindhouse aesthetic if ever there was one. I think his point was that it took grindhouse techniques and content and packaged them with a more mainstream sheen.
The original Friday the 13th wasn't exactly a great horror movie when it was first released but even though it was pretty poorly made you could still get a kick out of watching it. The remake on the otherhand sucks donkey ass.
I always remember my Grandma saying she thought Pyscho wasn't scary and was actually boring, but she thought Halloween was the scariest movie she ever saw (and she saw it when it first came out and she was 46). She refuses to watch the Rob Zombie remake lol.
I must be the only person on earth who can't find any value in Carptenter's Halloween. I've probably made a lot of enemies with that comment though ;)!
Friday the 13th (the original series) really is not about bringing Last House on the Left and Texas Chainsaw Massacre to "polite surroundings." Not at all. Not to mention, I doubt Cunningham was trying to make Friday the 13th any kind of grindhouse film. He produced Craven's Last House, yes. But Cunningham also knew first-hand how hated Last House was for being too gritty and hard-edged. In fact- if anything, credit him for trying to make a "scary" movie and making it as "nasty" as Friday was.
Agreed. He really deserves to have his head bashed in. But Kermode would never say that. That's why I think he hinted at - we the fans will already say that.
I also love Kermode's honesty about how bad the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre was. Too bad he didn't mention about how Bay's also producing the prequel or remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
i am agree with him on these remakes.

These kind of remakes does not have to be a good movie if we are to enjoy it, just enjoy the characters and all the crazy stuff that will appear.

This Guy is my favorite critic in the whole world...his opinion is the only thing he lets out....no big studio side money talk

He's so good (opinionated but without being trite or pointless) that I don't even consider him a critic.
