@scotty261gfd I would love..LOVE to have seen you jump that fire with two men and a 1 3/4 line. You wouldn't have been in there long, I promise you. I have 25 years paid and 10 years volunteer. Just so you don't think I'm...uh...blowing smoke.
Since I'm a Chief I should not ever do any "work" at a fire, if command has been established I always watch out for and supervise from the "front line".
Seems to me they did what they were supposed to do given the shortage of personnel on scene. They established a water supply and attacked the fire with the 2 1/2. They also pulled another 1 3/4 line the white hat was using. Good job with the resources they had.
May be wrong but it sure looked like the fire got pushed into the office by that initial attack kept expecting an interior crew for the office but it never happened.
vfd's do a great service to the community they serve, however, I must agree with gekkothegreat1. big fire big water, ppe on All fireman, vent that roof no matter how hard it is. They should have used a deck monitor also. It would have made a big difference. Theyshould be pushing the fire out to the burned areas already if possible rather than push it to new fuel.
@bigcityff8131 That is very true in an ideal situation. However, that luxury is seldom, if ever, afforded to a volunteer department in the early stages of an incident. In fact a Chief Off icer who isn't willing to hump a line when necessary isn't worth a damn. If you had actually watched this video with any intelligence you would have seen other Chiefs on scene. Most likely one of them had command. If you would like to break this fire down point by point I'm here and ready. Stay safe.
I think that you guys did a nice job for it being such a structural sturdy building! How many guys do you have on this Dept? But to TOXICKAVENGER: I am on a VFD and we only have 33 guys and no matter what time of day it is we always get there quickly and get the job done! Thats how any Dept. should be and this Dept. showed a good response and initial knockdown!
Seems to be a few blind critics here. I see multiple firefighters wearing SCBA. A volunteer dept. might not have access to multiple air tanks initially. The Chief on the handline didn't need one. Save it for the firefighters. Old building, heavy fire load and, most likely short of initial manpower yet great positioning of apparatus and damn good choice of initial water on the fire. Some of you know-it-alls should post some of your vids for scrutinization. NICE WORK!
Wow, the only one in a BA is the lone guy at the master stream. Why is command running around with the nozzle? Sketchy fire to not be wearing proper PPE.
Yeah it was a good stop considering the occupancy and the fire load. If we fail to properly wear our PPE, we aren't much more than highly trained spectators waiting to get hurt. Stay safe brothers, scar tissue has a really long memory.
haha good stop? That is just the kind of fire that kicks your ass. Good work though getting the big lines deployed but maybe send a crew in from the unburned side after blitz and try to hit the inside. Note the attic on fire. lol good job
I am a Chief of a rural area, and we have a saying "Big fire......Big water". I suggest a few more folks wearing SCBAs might be a good idea. Just a suggestion.
There are hundreds of youtube videos of jobs with heavy fire showing, commercial or residential, and the "inch and three-quarters mentality" dominates. It is a two or three room interior line, at best. GOOD JOB with choosing the right size line, and it looks to be pumped correctly, and THAT is how it works when you use it right!
You get these experts in firefighting they either have ben to a couple of schools or they work for large city and they all think they are experts. They dont realize that 80% of the FF in this country are volunteer, Many communities have only 2 or 3 people near the station or avalible in the day time. Those of us who understand say you did a good job. The kibitzers, they dont understand.
Tough fire. Once the 2.5 went into the garage it was all over, pushed it to the whole building. Wasn't much to do at that point looks like it had a pretty good head start. might have popped a hole in the roof when they had the stick up though. I know i've never been on a fire that i didn't say "maybe I could have done this". Good job guys.
@dug2fire On that note, GREAT job leaving the front of the building open for the truck. Engine stayed far enough back, and laid their line to the side of the street!
Did everyone go home at the end of the day? Then it was a good job.

"The Chief on the handline...." EXACTLY...Chief's don't belong on handlines. They are are supposed to be in Command.

Police were incompetent, tear gas should have been used against the rioters. Rioters should have been shot in the leg.
