  • i just threw up because i found out how much a really suck without actually watching them play.

  • I think they should try a 4

  • Comment removed

  • some gold from petrucci at the end! if you don't know what he's on about... come on, learn some theory

  • Enable subtitles and get ready to laugh!

  • I'm learning how to read music from a book...I hope that when I'm done I know what they're talking about!

  • The count would have a hay day with this...

  • It would be much better if they go:

    1, 3, 2 ,1 , g minor, 3 ,2 1, 32,13 ,31 24,1234 1241iugs187298712

    WTF?!?!??!!? O.o

  • It's amazing how they can argue, but still be respectful and open to opinion

  • Portnoy and Petrucci were having quite a disagreement in this video. 1, 2, and 3 was just their way of labeling the riff sections i think. But it seemed like Portnoy wanted a section were Petrucci and Rudess played their solos. So it would essentially be Rudess and Petrucci bouncing solos off of each other in one particular section of the song. What Petrucci wanted was a completely separate section for the both of them, which I honestly prefer. Makes the song longer and the solos more effective.

  • this vid make me dizzy

  • cool how they talk to each other with a giant rack blocking their view

  • Mike is so loud....... He needs to talk

  • Does anyone know what song they're talking about?

  • @Humandavid1 the 1's, 2's, and 3's are riff numbers that they have written for the song, and have been given specific numbers because you cant name a riff if you dont have a place for it yet. the Gminor and all that are just the key the riff/solo will be played in.

  • @TheRevProdigy777 Are you sure you're talking to me? Either way: "you cant name a riff if you dont have a place for it yet" I see no reason for this statement (I disagree).

  • @Humandavid1 oh, i didnt notice you said "song", all i saw was "does anyone know what theyre taling about?"

  • @TheRevProdigy777 hm, yep. It's whatever

  • You fucking idiots, that's how a BAND makes a song, that's not manipulation, don't be stupid. They're just talking about how they could make the song structure.

  • He sounds a lot like Lars. Its karma baby, you leave your band and now a band leaves you..

  • He's a drummer what the fuck does he care about harmony?

  • @robotsforever Obvious troll is obvious, or really really dumb.

  • @CjkinsProductions Dream Theater is my favorite band. It's merely an opinion and I don't expect anyone to share it. I don't need to insult you, you've already proved your own ignorance and insecurity by immediately becoming hostile at the sight of a different opinion. Perhaps you should spend more time working on your grammar instead of looking for fights on youtube.

  • @robotsforever

Saying "what the fuck does he care about harmony?" is not a normal way to express your opinion.

  • @robotsforever because he cares about how his band sounds. He's a songwriter too, so he wants everything to sound its best not just his drums

  • @robotsforever "what the fuck does he care about harmony?" thats arrogance. im a drummer, but i also play guitar, piano, keyboard, synth, and i sing. im really into songwriting as a whole, even though i am better at drums, i still like being a part of the entire writing process. being isolated to just percussive sounds is madening.

  • I would have never thought about this if not for MP's recent departure, but in light of recent events this video shows that MP was kind of being a control freak about the music. I love him, but I can kind of understand what the rest of DT is saying now.

  • speaking of manipulation... im excited now for you guys entering on studio.. im sure all your ideas will be implemented on a new album.. good luck and i hope you will find a new drummer soon.

  • lol mike is such a douche

  • good riddance to bad rubbish

  • what song and what part were they talking about?

  • @TheBuddyGreen A Rite Of Passage, the solo section from about 5:18.

  • they name their riffs with numbers???fuck that must get confusing!!!

  • recordings won't work without mike

  • They could've gone with 1 2 1 3 1 1... Right? xD

  • We won't be seeing this again for a while.

  • Counting with dream theater: 1, 2, 3, g minor

  • MIKE!!!!! PLEASE DON´T GO!!

    COME BACK!!!!

  • petrucci got JACKED

  • well JP now you can do what you want :)

  • I have shorts like portnoys wearing

  • ????!!????

  • @guitarguyjames94

Are you kidding me? No one can put on John Petrucci.

  • 1-2

    1-3

    ...1?

    petrucci is always right

  • didn't know dream theater were so into minors!

  • Wow...Didn't knew, that Portnoy knows some music theory :O

Even If He Didn't, He would STILL be A God.

  • @jeserty6 dude he went to burklee, he knows alot of theory

  • @compoundguy not for very long though. Dropped out.

  • @compoundguy :|

  • @jeserty6 he went to berklee -.- thats how JP and JM met with him -.-

  • @ikedaspike77

    LOL WTF?

    I know :D

  • the shattered fortress sucks jajaja

i expected some thing mora creative and blowing-minds thing ):

  • this aint the official jordan channel, thats JCRUDESS...

  • @allmetaliswelcome this is his old one

  • Do you think they're playing or real think about the music ?

  • i love listening to them discuss music...just seeing the way their minds work in song construction is fascinating

  • Myung is there, you can see him when Jordan appears :P

  • is that guitar small?? compared to his old Ibanez... or is he bigger too?....

  • @MADEINMAIDEN As he consumes the souls of lesser guitarists his muscle mass increases.

  • @rguitar87 :D:D:D

  • theyre talking bout rite of passage that strong metal part in the middle. looks like mike got his way cuz the riff comes in just like how he said and both jp and jr solo on top of it.

  • thats confusing. i think they might be talking about going back and forth between riffs 1, 2, and 3 but that would depend on the solo and song

  • Is Jordan behind the camera?

  • @gordieman yes

  • yes

  • I get it.

  • its forms binary and tenary in this case its tenarry

    binary =ABAB

    tenrary= ABAC

  • @darrenguitar Ternary*

and they have just labeled different riffs 1 2 and 3, its not hard to work out lol

  • I love these guys! By the way, can anyone tell me what they're talking about when they say 1 2 and 1 3 and stuff like that?

  • @Evanhalf riff sections

  • err... WTF.

  • god, this is how it goes with me and my bandmates...

  • ??!?? lol thats some confusing shiit XD

  • Is that Myung in the back ground or what?

  • this is a rite of passage

  • Oh, guitar players...

  • what song are they talkign about? is it nightmare because that looks like the guitar he used when i saw like him sponsoring it and it was like detuned to like A

  • That's because Myung doesn't talk.

  • Actually you're wrong...I heard him say "thanks" once. Barlely, but I heard it.

  • And...... where is Myung??? jajajajaja He doesn't appear on those videos!!! And he doesn't talk about the structure of any song!! Why??????????

  • lol what the hell is the 1,2,1,2,1,3,1,2,3 thing?

  • song structure im assuming

  • petrucci è enorme....

  • I wonder how many non-progressive bands are this serious about the music.

  • one two one three one four sixandahalf one one two.... somewhere I lost it...

  • JP stop using big words that i cant understand.

  • "the satisfaction coming back to that riff" :D

  • a Rite of Passage is NOT on a seven string or Drop D. It is is STANDARD "D"!!

  • Actually, i play it in drop D and it sounds fine, Petrucci probably does play it in D standard though.

  • yea JP NEVER EVER EVER uses drop, its always 7strings, and standard tuning no matter what, whether its in C, or D, or B...or Bb...

I was hoping to hear a really funny porgressive song on BC&SL with teh banjo thing hahaha

    guess not

  • Home and Misunderstood are in drop D

  • nope

  • It's not, it's just bad tabbing.

  • No, watch the Chaos In Motion DVD. JP's tech goes through all his guitars and he has one in Drop D for Home and Misunderstood.

  • i thought a rite of passage was in drop D?

i could be wrong of course...

  • yea, everythings standard...Open D, Open C. open B, open Bb, Open E...

  • I think it's D standard.

  • JP does uses Baritone, and actually on the chaos on motion DVD in the stage tour, guitar tech says he's tuning in Drop D

  • He uses a drop D tuning on Home from SFAM and Misunderstood from SDOIT.

  • you guys sure? I couldve sworn that he never uses Drop D. I could be wrong tho. I know MOST of the time he uses Standard open D

  • Yep. I'm sure. He also uses a Drop D tuning on Space Dye Vest. It has been a while since he's used a drop tuning. I think of it this way: Why Drop D when you can Baritone? XD

    Pity laughs would be appreciated.

  • Ha....ha.....ha............

I just love his new Dimarizio 2009 video. Omgsh the crunch and full depth of that sound and the Open C guitar is such a beast.

  • It's not Dimarizio, it's Dimarzio.. lol

  • uh...sorry?

  • You got one from me, buddy.

  • How is he?

  • ah ah ah ah!!!you right!!

  • Buying bread from a man in brussels...

  • Petrucci is on steroids!

    He is bigger and bigger!

  • actually "xthepatient" A rite of Passage os on a six string in standard D and A nightmare to Remember is on a six string in standard C.

  • Drop D

  • Lol it actually surprises me how shy John Myung is.

He's done countless live shows in front of massive audiences lol.

  • I think John Petrucci, Jordan and Mike Portnoy know that John Myung is there because

a.) Mike and John Petrucci think that he some Chinese dude that keeps following them.

    b.) He's a ninja.

  • HE IS KOREAN

  • Dude, I was refering to the parody where John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy were walking down the hall way and Mike said there was some chinese dude that keeps following them. Geez, dude I know he's Korean. It's a dream theater parody. Check it out yourself.

  • I wonder what Myung is doing at times like these.

  • Recharging...

  • There talking about 'A Nightmare to Remember'

  • you can tell it's A Rite of Passage at 0.02 seconds, Mike Portnoy sings the Gm riff of the solo where the guitar solo eventually enters.

  • doubtful. since he is using a six string

  • Petrucci has put on weight!

  • Yeah but it's muscle weight so it's all good lol

  • I love conversations like this.. It's so much fun trying to arrange a song in the best possible way to get most out of all the riffs that are available.. not that i've written songs quite to the caliber of Dream Theater... but still.. it's an awesome process and it's cool getting a glimpse of what it's like being in the studio with those guys ;)

  • Yea...i think its rite of passage

  • theyre talking about A Rite of Passage

  • WHAT SONG ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT!

  • cool progressive chat

  • you`re all wrong. what is the ultimate truth ? the "dream theater" are all the VALIS. they are all above all, they are hugeNotewhich gives us eternal information about the universe and about ourselves...:D P.K. Dick

  • fuck man my head hurts the only thing i can hear is "1 3 g minor solo you dont wanna share it lets go all on the same riff it goes" omggg but lol

  • i'm glad i've learned the theory; i can actually understand what they're saying =D

  • The only thing you could decipher using theory is what G minor is....

you still dont know what riffs they're talking about

  • the riffs themselves, no. but the structure they are discussing, yes.

  • theyre numbering riffs to identify them so they know how to arrange them in a the solos section, choosing which riffs or keys to modulate to underneath the leads

  • And that it comes out of D haha

But that ain't really theory lmao

  • i know what your saying man haha i understand, and it makes me wanna hear the riffs more!!!!

  • john petrucci's used to look so thinnn, now he's wearing tight clothes and buffing up?

he's still a pill at least XD

  • Comment removed

  • yea sure LoL ,, better then petrucci cuz he seems dazzeled at the end ,, I can say u made the song not them LoL kidding my friend ,, wut's hilarious is tht john forgot about tht ;-)

  • Don't proclaim yourself to be an incredibly musical geek if you're obviously wrong :D

3:20 into The Count of Tuscany starts a riff with a C bass and they never run any keyboard or guitar solos over it. The 1-2-1-3 refers to different riffs and they're debating which order to play them in. They're probably - like people have pointed out - talking about the solo section of Rite of Passage. At no point during the unison do they come from or go into D in Count of Tuscany

  • jp looks like an old AB member...

  • why is john myung always missing in action?? hahaha

  • is it just me or is Petrucci getting bufff

  • he looks like hes shooting the juice!

  • he is getting buff acually. but it's all muscle. iI read on wikipedia that he likes to do weightlifting.

  • Yes he is getting big. He spends his off-time body building and such.

  • Well, wiki creatine...

  • or just wearing tighter shirts

  • Actually it is the riff under the solo...the riff starts off in a different key, they just change the key to G when the solo starts.

  • Dude listen to the 1st riff Portnoy was talking about...it is A Rite Of Passage! Right before the solo there is a riff like that and then the solo starts off with that melody too.

  • Thats what she said!

No but you are right, they are deciding if they are putting in that part in the background of JP's solo

  • Is it me, or does it seem like Portnoy runs the entire thing?

  • He really does. Almost all the time. Fucking dictator... lol...

  • Well he does have the official title of "band leader" for a reason.

  • yeah hes obviously the leader in dt..

  • @asdfasdsfsa in dark tranquility? I didnt know he played for that band.

  • Petrucci has a great point.

The best DT solos (erotomania, under a glass moon, Lie) etc all have customised, bespoke backing that makes the solos so unique.

Just having guitar solo-key solo-guitar solo etc takes away the uniqueness of the solo. It makes the soloing a gimmick as opposed to a whole new section in the song of artistic expression that it should be.

Although, JR's best solo is the Home solo, which is back to back, but written very well.

DT: spend more time on your songwriting.

  • what about voices?! octavarium?! repentance?! kick ass solos.

  • Yep very true!

Kick ass solos that weren't suddenly followed by keyboard solos, that's my point bro! :)

The current style of DT is to just ram the guitar and keyboard solos back to back at around 3/4's into the song.

I prefer when each solo has its own custom made section; it's own space to breathe and bring the song to a climax

  • that's pretty true..

  • I'm sad. This used to be my favorite band. Last two albums...aarrggghhh... just stop trying so hard and make some good songs for a change...

  • I cant agree with you because it's the trying and the complicated badass-riffs that makes dream theater-music

  • I believe this shows that they have no idea what they're doing...

  • I believe this shows that you have no idea about what they are talking about....

  • I agree with everyone saying that the two songs leaked are friggin amazing. After being extremely disappointed with Systematic Chaos I didn't want to order the album before I had listened to it but now when I've heard the leaked songs I can't friggin wait! I want the album now! NOW!

  • systematic was awesome

  • " "just because their the best musicians in rock, it doestnt neciscarilly make them the best "

how does that even make sense? u think they're the best, but that doesn't necessarily make them the best..? "

Because there are these neat little genres called Jazz and Classical.

  • I happy mike pushed for this one, it sounds really awesome.

  • they're discussing a rite of passage's solo section

  • What's up with that shit!

why does dream theater all of a sudden have a bear deciding on their songs and touching petrucci's guitar!

goes to show you, only dream theater can find a guitar playing bear.

  • I love A Nightmare To Remember and A Rite Of Passage! ANTR reminds me of Awake during the breakdown. I love how erie and dark it sounds. I just wonder what song they are talking about here...I am so curious lol.

  • they are talkin bout rite of passage....i love both the songs till now!! cant wait for count of tuscany....its goin to be an epic like in the name of god!!!

  • Were are you guys hearing these songs. i want to hear, im pulling my hair out im going crazy i want a taste. :( please tell me

  • They were leaked. Those two particularly are rather heavy, I'm hoping the whole album isn't that way.

  • Wonder if the Jonas brother have such a musical collaberation?

  • i alredy heard 2 songs from the last album...i tell u all...it rocks..to me it sounds like a little bit of systematic and a dark and intese drumming from mike...is freaking awesome..

  • Again, sense of humour. Get one. It's not like they're standing there straight-faced, is it? Tool.
