Portnoy and Petrucci were having quite a disagreement in this video. 1, 2, and 3 was just their way of labeling the riff sections i think. But it seemed like Portnoy wanted a section were Petrucci and Rudess played their solos. So it would essentially be Rudess and Petrucci bouncing solos off of each other in one particular section of the song. What Petrucci wanted was a completely separate section for the both of them, which I honestly prefer. Makes the song longer and the solos more effective.
@Humandavid1 the 1's, 2's, and 3's are riff numbers that they have written for the song, and have been given specific numbers because you cant name a riff if you dont have a place for it yet. the Gminor and all that are just the key the riff/solo will be played in.
@TheRevProdigy777 Are you sure you're talking to me? Either way: "you cant name a riff if you dont have a place for it yet" I see no reason for this statement (I disagree).
You fucking idiots, that's how a BAND makes a song, that's not manipulation, don't be stupid. They're just talking about how they could make the song structure.
@CjkinsProductions Dream Theater is my favorite band. It's merely an opinion and I don't expect anyone to share it. @robotsforever "what the fuck does he care about harmony?" thats arrogance. im a drummer, but i also play guitar, piano, keyboard, synth, and i sing. im really into songwriting as a whole, even though i am better at drums, i still like being a part of the entire writing process. being isolated to just percussive sounds is madening.
I would have never thought about this if not for MP's recent departure, but in light of recent events this video shows that MP was kind of being a control freak about the music. I love him, but I can kind of understand what the rest of DT is saying now.

Petrucci has a great point.
The best DT solos (erotomania, under a glass moon, Lie) etc all have customised, bespoke backing that makes the solos so unique.
Just having guitar solo-key solo-guitar solo etc takes away the uniqueness of the solo. It makes the soloing a gimmick as opposed to a whole new section in the song of artistic expression that it should be.
Although, JR's best solo is the Home solo, which is back to back, but written very well.
DT: spend more time on your songwriting.
Ataraxian13 2 years ago 2
what about voices?! octavarium?! repentance?! kick ass solos.
Accavarium 2 years ago
Yep very true!
Kick ass solos that weren't suddenly followed by keyboard solos, that's my point bro! :)
The current style of DT is to just ram the guitar and keyboard solos back to back at around 3/4's into the song.
I prefer when each solo has its own custom made section; it's own space to breathe and bring the song to a climax
