  • hypermiling a caprice is like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound

  • To Hyper mile in my impala I just drove really slow.. It helped. The line behind me on every road when I did just the limit was funny. I Did get 3 MPG better overall than I used to. When the drive shaft is moving and the engine is not on a 4L60E you are running the transmission without the pump turning. No good for extended miles.

  • what a shame you didnt crash and die...

  • @steve560 thanks asshole

  • It might be under oil under pressure, but it's cold oil under pressure. That will not provide the correct viscosity. Look, at the end of the day, engines are built to be working with all the ancilliaries running and the engine up to operating speed and temperature. Anything else is an engineering error.

  • So you're coasting with the transmission engaged, the electrics off and the engine turning? Good luck with that one when the lack of oil circulating causes your engine to turn into a block of scrap metal.

  • The oil pump is not electric, it is mechanical, so with the engine turning the oil is circulating and at pressure. If I really wanted to cause a lubrication failure all I have to do is use ethanol adulterated gasoline.

  • Not to mention that power brakes or ABS won't work. Also it could damage the engine on some cars as the fuel pump isn't primed properly and the sudden firing with the incorrect mixture of fuel and air in the chamber can cause piston and crank wear over time.

  • Power steering and power brakes still work because the engine is still turning and still providing vacuum assist to the brakes. The ABS won't work because that is an electrical driven device. What this shows is that an engine does not need fuel to turn, so why wasn't the PCM programmed to do this manually. I have to reflash the PCM with a new program to save fuel.

  • I suppose you can choose to do what you wish, however I would not recommend driving the car without the key in the run position. I don't care if the engine is on or off. The problem here is by having the car completely off, you lose all the electronics, ie: air bags won't work (extremely important), odometer won't work, and your speedo' won't work. I coast with my engine off all the time, but I also drive stick. But, like I said, it's up to you to make the informed decision.
