Jeez that boss fight really is rough. For someone reason I manage to handle it well on this version, but I never recall being able to dodge those leaves on NES. I have two videos of this fight on my channel. You should check them out!

It IS a tough boss battle, i have to say it's more because Wood Man gives such little opportunity for you to hit him rather than because his attacks are fast and hard to avoid.
