The top piece around the instrument panel comes off as well. You want to pull that off before you remove the piece under it. Just pull it straight out. It's just clamped in like the rest of them.

thanks Hystria1. my 4 year old shoved 2 CDs into the player and i needed to remove it to get them out. you saved me a lot of sweating and cursing on 90 degree day.
