My dad, also a drummer in the 50s with several bands, thought Louie Bellson & Buddy Rich were the amazing. Truly two of his greatest idols. I remember watching Johnny Carson with him as a kid and he would get so excited when either of these guys were on. Fantastic...thanks for uploading.
I was never a great jazz fan but this man crosses boundaries and transcends genres. I have this on both sides of a 78rpm disc and would therefore last for a lot longer than this does even taking out the orchestral intro! It was great to hear it again thanks for uploading it. Crazy to think this pre-dates video and even stereo recording.
@TheNigelc8 Joe Morello was the perfect jazz drummer in my opinion! He always had amazing sounding kits (and cymbals), he could swing hard and had incredible technique. I love the fact he would never overplay....just locked into the groove and stayed on the beat, finding just the perfect spot for fills.....I can't stand jazz drummers who solo throughout the whole song., stepping all over the other musicians........I can't say enough good things about Joe.Morello.......Great drummer, great guy!
Louie was doing that same sequence in an extended drum solo even way back in the 50's. Starting with the sticks then brushes then jingle sticks and finally back to regular sticks. In later years he added the two sticks in each hand as a fourth technique. The recorded version of Skin deep on Dukes LP is one of the best recorded drum solo's of all time. The solo on the song Carnaby Street on Louie's album Louie in London i think rivals it however.
every drum video i watch travis barker come up, why? there are so many better drummers, louie bellson, buddy rich, sean reinert, gene hoglan, martin axenrot, blake richardson, brann dailor, and theres A LOT more
how about everybody be open minded to everything, jazz has a place and metal does to. they unfrequently are competing against each other, you douche bags are the ones that set music onto music, when it should be all respect and loved cuz its all great. love the drums period.
I don't exactly see Lars or Joey or Travis playing in a SUIT. That for one should show how awesome he is. Do you know how hard it is to move in those things?
too many great drummers... frank beard, frost, igor cavalera, pete sandoval, bill ward, ginger baker, neil peart, john bonham, ....ALL of them will tell you that these fellows-- Krupa, rich, bellson, webb--- THESE GUYS paved the way.

@4against1 just because some dude can go hella fast with 2 pedals doesnt mean he ca go as fast as other guys with one pedal. also, just because he uses a double bass pedal doesnt mean he can work on a kit like guys like this, this is a workout man!
Very cool video! I had the honor of meeting Bellson (and his wife, Pearl Bailey). Both very warm, personable, engaging people. When I told Louis that I played drums he just lit up and had nothing but words of camaraderie and encouragement. He couldn't have been more gracious.
So many people knock drummers wanting to play fast but it's so evident that speed has always been a part of the drum set and music. Only u need to have a groove just as strong and being musical also.
This solo launched a million drummers. The skill, inventiveness, swing and taste of Louie is legendary. No modern drummer can claim to not be influenced by Louis. @jwklbm326 haha. I should ask him. I will say Bonham was definately a more technical drummer, i just like the beats Ringo has on some of their more experimental material. I apologize, Bonham is a good drummer, I've just been having bad nicotine fits lol. trying to quit smoking.

@brakatt You have got to be the lamest fucktard drum enthusiast I've ever seen putting negative comments to a legend that PIONEERED double bass drumming. Bet you can't even do a quarter of his licks.
Back then there was no Axis or Pearl eliminator pedals -, and the worst thing is that Louie had the "shit" pedals etc (I would donate my ass to even touch one of his kits), but still kicks Lars and Joey's ass!
I really dig, how Louie just chills, while playing that drum solo. I honestly doubt that any (and I mean ANY) metal drummer for example, could play a drum solo with such intense speed.

My dad played this to me when I was a lad and I stole the 78 disc (still got it)..!! Been playing drums now 37 years and still can't master this..I'll stick to playing metal!!
@Jaw6221 Your a fucking dunce and you know absolutely nothing about percussion or drumming. Saying something so uneducated and misguided was your first strike. Insulting this drum master was your second. And your third strike was even getting a youtube account. No one should have to hear the prattle your mouth vomits.
@Jaw6221 You know what, this guy is a boss. Not only can he tear up a drum set like noone's business, he can do it with a fuckin' tuxedo on. You suck ass.
@Dragonwatcher2008: he did it as an extension of his tap dancing. just came naturally, and this video shows didn't rest on the double bass as a gimmick. extremely gifted percussionist and band leader who was still relevant well into his 80's.
HA HA HA.......John Bohnam blows, love led zep, but he's just not in the same class as the greats ie: Rich, Krupa, Bellson, Peart. Are you kidding with the Lars comment, that guy can't play drums.
Amazing.... a lesson to be learned...... Bellson played on Blizzard of Oz also..... a small unknown fact. He played the charts in the studio and didn't know what they were for until years later......
What a great player! The drums back then were great, but the hardware was shit. Look at his cymbal holder fold over at the end of the solo. The foot pedals were awful too. There were no DW9000's back then, just clunky leather strap crap!
Hardware really toughened up in the late 60's as rock was progressing and hardware had to withstand the harder pounding drummer. Those heads that Louie played in this clip might have been calf heads, something many rock drummers in the 60's did not play on, as they played plastic heads, also to withstand the harder pounding drummer.
Bellson's technical skill was incredible, amazing, fantastic, pick your adjective:). I used to play drums, but could never have approached what Bellson does here. God bless Louis. Here's hoping that he and Pearlie Mae are resting in peace:)

God bless him for inventing the double bassdrum!!!!
Dragonwatcher2008 1 year ago
@Dragonwatcher2008: he did it as an extension of his tap dancing. just came naturally, and this video shows didn't rest on the double bass as a gimmick. extremely gifted percussionist and band leader who was still relevant well into his 80's.

@machias88 I like his Drumming very much

There were no DW9000's back then, just clunky leather strap crap!
fibes55 2 years ago
Hardware really toughened up in the late 60's as rock was progressing and hardware had to withstand the harder pounding drummer. Those heads that Louie played in this clip might have been calf heads, something many rock drummers in the 60's did not play on, as they played plastic heads, also to withstand the harder pounding drummer.

Bellson's technical skill was incredible, amazing, fantastic, pick your adjective:). I used to play drums, but could never have approached what Bellson does here. God bless Louis. Here's hoping that he and Pearlie Mae are resting in peace:)
