  • EL ES EL CULPABLE DE QUE MUCHOS JOVENES NOS HALLAMOS ENVECIADO POR EL DOBLE PEDAL xD

  • RIP Louie thanks for everything

  • Awesome! one of my hero's! RIP

  • This is fucking groovy! Love it

  • My dad, also a drummer in the 50s with several bands, thought Louie Bellson & Buddy Rich were the amazing. Truly two of his greatest idols. I remember watching Johnny Carson with him as a kid and he would get so excited when either of these guys were on. Fantastic...thanks for uploading.

  • I was never a great jazz fan but this man crosses boundaries and transcends genres. I have this on both sides of a 78rpm disc and would therefore last for a lot longer than this does even taking out the orchestral intro! It was great to hear it again thanks for uploading it. Crazy to think this pre-dates video and even stereo recording.

  • this kind of drumming was exist in 1957? this guy is a god

  • @Jbams01 hi jb, pleaseeee unblock me!!!

  • Amazing!

  • thas jus fkn wow

  • 1:48 - 2:06 = MADNESS!

    I thought I wuz at a rave.

  • For subtlety & underplay with confidence & restrained power the Drummers

Drummers are/were MORELLO & MANNE. As for Morello, check out C jam blues

live & Far more drums--Castillian having been mentioned already. One who never

gets a mention is the flamboyant late BRIT Drummer--Ted Heaths,Ronnie Verrell.

  • he married pearl bailey the awesome entertainer

  • awesome playing

  • When you're looking at and listening to this you understand the history of drumming of the next half of the XX century. . .

  • WOW

  • kiss my axe, awesome

  • stevebul. I agree, but what do u think of Joe Morello 'Castillion Drums' part 2, in my humble opinion that is right up there with the best.

  • @TheNigelc8 Joe Morello was the perfect jazz drummer in my opinion! He always had amazing sounding kits (and cymbals), he could swing hard and had incredible technique. I love the fact he would never overplay....just locked into the groove and stayed on the beat, finding just the perfect spot for fills.....I can't stand jazz drummers who solo throughout the whole song., stepping all over the other musicians........I can't say enough good things about Joe.Morello.......Great drummer, great guy!

  • Louie was doing that same sequence in an extended drum solo even way back in the 50's. Starting with the sticks then brushes then jingle sticks and finally back to regular sticks. In later years he added the two sticks in each hand as a fourth technique. The recorded version of Skin deep on Dukes LP is one of the best recorded drum solo's of all time. The solo on the song Carnaby Street on Louie's album Louie in London i think rivals it however.

  • he is kinda, in a way, like a controlled Keith Moon.

  • See everything epic always leads back to jazz music O.o

  • Comment removed

  • Gravis is GAY

  • first double bass

  • RADICAL

  • Equipment wasnt built tough in those days

  • Who the f86k is travis Barker?

  • every drum video i watch travis barker come up, why? there are so many better drummers, louie bellson, buddy rich, sean reinert, gene hoglan, martin axenrot, blake richardson, brann dailor, and theres A LOT more

  • @phreestylesk8r Travis Barker how you say is the Justin Beiber of drummers which is why that happens

  • Travis Barker cannot compare.

  • LoL, the old film barely picks up his left hand, it's moving so fast ;)

  • Who said white guys don't have soul?

  • @st82nd It was something great back in the days... respect the guy.

  • Yogscast

  • @1994fishcake what about the yogscast?

  • BEAST!

  • to me lars is the worst drummer in a great band have you ever heard a drum solo from lars, lars is the ringo starr of trashmetal...

  • 1:50-2:14. Thats Buddy.

  • The KING

  • how about everybody be open minded to everything, jazz has a place and metal does to. they unfrequently are competing against each other, you douche bags are the ones that set music onto music, when it should be all respect and loved cuz its all great. love the drums period.

  • @AROBcyprus Well said Im sick of posting similar comments all over the place!

Maybe we should just let them get on with it. Not our loss is it.

  • @talbotvanman let em be close minded they'll end up not being much more than a shadow of someone

  • I don't exactly see Lars or Joey or Travis playing in a SUIT. That for one should show how awesome he is. Do you know how hard it is to move in those things?

  • @philconey11 lol for the record lars played in a suit at the rock & roll hall fame induction, just sayin.

  • the music being played at the end does not match this drum solo

  • and people think john Bonham is awesome.

  • 2:00

    BLOODY HELL!!!

  • And after, came metal...

  • lars in his PRIME maybe possessed about 1/10 of this guy's talent. and i fuckin love OLD metallica when lars was actually worth -a- shit.

  • too many great drummers... frank beard, frost, igor cavalera, pete sandoval, bill ward, ginger baker, neil peart, john bonham, ....ALL of them will tell you that these fellows-- Krupa, rich, bellson, webb--- THESE GUYS paved the way.

  • i AM a metal head and love metal drums. --dont know how but i was watching this on PBS when i was a young teen back in the 80s--- this blew me away... i had always been a fan of buddy rich and gene krupa thanks to some older cats telling me what was up, but i had never seen footage of any of them at the time.(this was before the luxury of the internet),,,, that double bass/snare roll stuff at the end of the clip--- that is nothin but pure death metal/black metal roots in the making. bow down!!!

  • Everyone saying metalheads need to see this: I'm from Moline (where he's from), and he's a hometown hero among metalheads. It seems like nobody else knows who the Hell he is though.

  • fuck everyone talkin shit on him.. hes so fucking good. and hey people lars sucks. what, is this 1995? there are way better drummers and this is just proof of that. your ignorant, hands down... if u agree with me ur on sum real shit but if not, get fucked :)

  • His fucking ride falls at the end he was freakin crashin it

  • thesie days no 1 can touch lars ulritch on a fucking doubel bass set

  • @4against1 just because some dude can go hella fast with 2 pedals doesnt mean he ca go as fast as other guys with one pedal. also, just because he uses a double bass pedal doesnt mean he can work on a kit like guys like this, this is a workout man!

  • @4against1 really? then look lup Gene Hoglan, Tim Yeung and George Kollias. they're all way faster and way better than Lars. Lars is terrible

  • @4against1 duuude...EVERYONE can touch Lars on a "fucking doubel bass set"

  • Bellson was a BEAST on the kit! Dude always looked like he was having the best time of his life too.

  • Kick ass

He uses double bass drums and blast beats 1957 FUCK YES

  • Very cool video! I had the honor of meeting Bellson (and his wife, Pearl Bailey). Both very warm, personable, engaging people. When I told Louis that I played drums he just lit up and had nothing but words of camaraderie and encouragement. He couldn't have been more gracious.

  • @jaws622 It might not be a song but its music to my ears! Whose this Barker bloke I keep hearing about?

  • @talbotvanman travis barker look him up dipshit fucking noobie

  • This mother fucker is crazy!!! All respect to bellson

  • Damn Louie definately had some game. I had no idea till now?

  • Wow, he got it !!!!

  • So many people knock drummers wanting to play fast but it's so evident that speed has always been a part of the drum set and music. Only u need to have a groove just as strong and being musical also.

  • omg love this guy!

  • 1:35 the beginning of a new genre

  • Also, Louie's single stroke speed is nearly impossible for most drummers to match. Just ask one who's tried.

  • This solo launched a million drummers. The skill, inventiveness, swing and taste of Louie is legendary. No modern drummer can claim to not be influenced by Louis. Modern drumming communicates from an unbroken chain forged by masters of the past, weather it's known to today's artist or not. From Gene Krupa, Chick Webb, Buddy Rich, on up to John Bonham, Dennis Chambers and Mike Portnoy, the drumming art form and this lineage of greatness builds the bridge to new discoveries for the future. Enjoy!

  • @jwklbm326 i dont get why you include john bonham in that. he really isn't that good. on a list of the 20 greatest drummers of all time, the only reason he'll ever be on it is because his death ended led zeppelin. man, id rather listen to ringo starr drum than him. at least his drum parts are catchy and unique.

  • @dudemanwhoathe1st

While I respect your freedom to think and say whatever you like, you are dead wrong about Bonham. Just ask Ringo.

  • @jwklbm326 haha. I should ask him. I will say Bonham was definately a more technical drummer, i just like the beats Ringo has on some of their more experimental material. I apologize, Bonham is a good drummer, I've just been having bad nicotine fits lol. trying to quit smoking.

  • omg hes so good, his cymbal started bowing to him at the end :D

    freakin awesome!

  • Absolutely outstanding!

  • I just love that back in the day, they could drum like that in a 3-piece suit and tie.

  • Bellson was a truly gifted musician and his joy while playing is evident. I love his playing and gift of music. Bill Richardson,Jackson,Ms

  • Hey folks, you could count on the fingers of one hand the drummers in the same class as Louis, an all-time great and recognized as that by his peers in the big band jazz scene.

  • The next Dave Lombardo.

  • @GuitarGOR

you mean the other way around Louie was way before Lombardo was even born

  • Great drummer, grazie

  • Sorry but this guy looks a right spastic

  • I communicated with Louis by email and he sent me his autograph. He was amazing and indeed the pioneer of the kick ass double kick drums.

  • I saw Bellson play and he was amazingly clean.

  • travis barker could not even hold this guys drum sticks let alone play like him

  • Youtube idiot #1: " Travis Barker will kill this guy"

Youtube idiot #2: " Fuck you. You must not know anything about drums. I hope you burn in hell ..........yada yada yada."

Youtube (not an idiot but still pointless in making an interjection that will settle nothing)#3: "Can't we just appreciate both drummers for their unique styles. Both of them are unique and talented..."

Just shedding some light on how halarious Youtube comments are to read.

  • I STILL USE MY WFL SPEED KING! Nothing wrong with the old pedals. They make you work harder.

  • @brackett, I've gotta song for you. It's called "If I Only Had a Brain". And even if you did, you wouldn't be qualified to carry this man's stick bag. YOU are a JOKE.

  • Looks like my dad on a drum-set, minus the incredible talent :P

  • my names louie and im a drummer too :)

  • Still amazing every time I watch this.

  • @brakatt You have got to be the lamest fucktard drum enthusiast I've ever seen putting negative comments to a legend that PIONEERED double bass drumming. Bet you can't even do a quarter of his licks.

  • @brakatt you are fucking lame.

  • Back then there was no Axis or Pearl eliminator pedals -, and the worst thing is that Louie had the "shit" pedals etc (I would donate my ass to even touch one of his kits), but still kicks Lars and Joey's ass!

  • that was pretty metal

  • I really dig, how Louie just chills, while playing that drum solo. I honestly doubt that any (and I mean ANY) metal drummer for example, could play a drum solo with such intense speed.

  • yknow i really adore jazz and have been a lifelong fan...but...i've always wanted to say....can you imagine guys like Bellson, Rich, and Krupa whackin it with that kind of speed? my god!! can you even picture what kind of self-adventures they enjoyed, and what that must have felt like to a woman?

and trying to follow Krupa's whack moves would be just as difficult as following his sweet drumming!! it'd be that fast and crazy, your eyes wouldn't be able to keep up!!! O.o awesome or ow??

  • 0.00-2.30

    good god indeed

  • 1:10-1:20

    good god.

  • before i saw this vid i would have never thought that i will see a man in the early 1940's playing fucking fast ass drums.omg öouis was really genius.thank god he invented the double bass drum.RIP

  • loui can blast!!!

  • wtf! what an amazing drummer he is! jesus.

  • The father of drums! inspiration for tomas haake! haha

  • 0'22 - first recorded use of a blastbeat :)

  • @zepromz Yeah, that's what I was thinking, except Buddy Rich was doing it too. But yeah, definitely some blastbeats in the 50's. :)

  • The god father of double bass! thanks for the post

  • his feet r so fucking slow its retarted lars ulritch can kick his fucking ass in speed and i can play this shit with 1 fucking pedal dude sucks

  • @BLINK4LIFE100 durr

  • @BLINK4LIFE100 Show us then... i bet you can play a bar of this solo. haha fucking Lars Ulrich. that piece of shit. His songs are among the first a rock drummer will learn. Go and listen to Travis barker you vagina!

  • @BLINK4LIFE100

This guy would blow Lars out of the water and KILL Travis Barker. Hate to tell you :D

    Barker SUCKS

  • @TheAtomicLad1996

yes!he probably is good at his style but he can't even imagine luie 's solos!

  • @TheAtomicLad1996 of course he would, they are both pussies....he has to try someone his own size like say...DAVE LOMBARDO!

  • @BLINK4LIFE100 u should acctully be boiled in hot oil, louie is orignial and if drummers with any sense unlike ur self they would acctully like good drummers, lars urlrich is possibly the shittest drummer to have ever sat on a drum stool and dont even get me started on travis baker there both overatted shit bags with both boring genric styles of playing and should be murderd for how shit they are. your oviously a unappreciative dick monkey

  • @BLINK4LIFE100 you is crazy dude

  • @BLINK4LIFE100 I saw your comment and i must say that you sir are a moron

  • hahahahaha

    yeah baby beat them skins

    RIP

    much love

  • My dad played this to me when I was a lad and I stole the 78 disc (still got it)..!! Been playing drums now 37 years and still can't master this..I'll stick to playing metal!!

  • @tms500s

37 year drummer and no drum vids? hmm

  • The original speed metal drummer,,you don't see today's drummer doing that ....just can;t compare

  • fuckin sweet

  • You know how many metalheads need to watch this?

  • @dodoheard do you mean that actually many metalheads watch this or that many metalheads should watch this ?

  • @hardcoreoma The latter.

  • @dodoheard ALL OF THEM?

  • @dodoheard

You know how many metalheads probably have watched this?

  • @TheInfamousAdrian96 i know, 5

  • @TheInfamousAdrian96

hahah no but probably alot more than that.

i mean metal did sort of come from jazz

  • @TheInfamousAdrian96

Yup this metal head and lovin it!

  • 0:25 BLAST BEATS!!!!

  • One thing you can notice about every accomplished drummer is the fun they have playing.

  • This is my favorite drum solo . Louie is always smilimg and enjying what he does the best.

  • Hes one of my favorite drummers from the jazz genre, along with buddy rich and gene krupa, and a little more modern Billy cobham.

  • The father of the double bassdrum technique! without this guy power metal will never exists as we know it today, god bless this guy!

  • Anddd thenn Lamb Of God cam around...

  • Cool drumming! The cymbal stand has died at the end! XD

  • @Jaw6221 It isnt a song, it's a drum solo.

  • @IXIBobOhIXI It's very melodic , though!!

  • @Jaw6221 Your a fucking dunce and you know absolutely nothing about percussion or drumming. Saying something so uneducated and misguided was your first strike. Insulting this drum master was your second. And your third strike was even getting a youtube account. No one should have to hear the prattle your mouth vomits.

  • @Jaw6221 you muat don't play jazz.........Ass

  • @Jaw6221 well he did study corp drumming

  • @Jaw6221 You know what, this guy is a boss. Not only can he tear up a drum set like noone's business, he can do it with a fuckin' tuxedo on. You suck ass.

  • Yea Lars is not even close to the styleish drummer that Louis was even by today s standards he dont hold a candle to him or a stick

  • damn!!!

  • He should live forever.

  • man drumming has come a long way. color video too.

  • God bless him for inventing the double bassdrum!!!!

  • @Dragonwatcher2008: he did it as an extension of his tap dancing. just came naturally, and this video shows didn't rest on the double bass as a gimmick. extremely gifted percussionist and band leader who was still relevant well into his 80's.

  • @machias88 I like his Drumming very much

  • HA HA HA.......John Bohnam blows, love led zep, but he's just not in the same class as the greats ie: Rich, Krupa, Bellson, Peart. Are you kidding with the Lars comment, that guy can't play drums.

  • fun to watch

  • Gretsch is Great...

  • Amazing.... a lesson to be learned...... Bellson played on Blizzard of Oz also..... a small unknown fact. He played the charts in the studio and didn't know what they were for until years later......

  • :45 - 1:10 is amazing.

  • what a great drummer

  • So great! BRAVO!

  • What a great player! The drums back then were great, but the hardware was shit. Look at his cymbal holder fold over at the end of the solo. The foot pedals were awful too. There were no DW9000's back then, just clunky leather strap crap!

  • Hardware really toughened up in the late 60's as rock was progressing and hardware had to withstand the harder pounding drummer. Those heads that Louie played in this clip might have been calf heads, something many rock drummers in the 60's did not play on, as they played plastic heads, also to withstand the harder pounding drummer.

  • Epic cymbal fall at 2:23.

  • Bellson's technical skill was incredible, amazing, fantastic, pick your adjective:). I used to play drums, but could never have approached what Bellson does here. God bless Louis. Here's hoping that he and Pearlie Mae are resting in peace:)

  • lol he basically has a modern day drum set

  • Or, you can say that modern drummers has got old drumkits!

  • lars ulrich is a disgrace to drumming. listen to some black dahlia murder then talk to me about double bass

  • wow. for the 50's, that drum set is huge.

  • juts imagine in that time, its bassicly the same patterns of modern metal drumming, sorry for metal that wasnt for that time

  • damn his snare fills

  • One of the great drummers and drum set/design innovators.

  • He's the best.

  • i had a dream and in it this solo was playing and i had never heard the song before 0_0
