I love this song. My parents bought the album! This is a great version. Mike really was the only musician on the Monkees. He was a great innovator and guess what kids, he might even be the father of the music video!
I was 13 when the Monkees came out. I never took them seriously, which probably was the intention of their producers. 30 or more years later I was captivated by this tune as sung by Frank Ifield. Years after that - now - I finally downloaded the Ifield version and have been listening to it. I was surprised to see that Mike Nesmith is the writer! Great song, and Nesmith has a new fan. I'm very impressed.
I forgot all about this song, until I heard it on a rebroadcast of am.top 40 from 1970,on satelite radio, do I went to you tube to see if it was on here and there it was.
I forgot all about this song, until I heard it on a rebroadcast of am.top 40,on satelite radio, do I went to you tube to see if it was on here and there it was.
Looks more like the great John Jorgenson, late of Desert Rose, etc. to me. And the incomparable O.J. (Red) Rhodes on pedal steel, gone too soon. I'm only a modest fan of Nesmith's music, that is to say, I like most of it. But one thing for certain, it is unique, unlike anybody else's in the country/rock/Texas genre. Great video. Thanks~~!
Great quality video recording! I like that he slowed the song down to savor the lyrics. I notice alot of 70s bands during live concerts speed up their song which I don't like.
@starfish50 That is incorrect. Peter Tork was a musician before interviewing for The Monkees, and a music teacher after the show. He probably played more instruments than the others combined. (Also the most intellectual of the four.) That being said, Mike Nesmith is still my favorite singer of the four, and this song, so beautifully written, shows such insight for a young man.
@dellison58 - Your right. Each were talented in their own ways. My best friends use the MONKEYS as their thyme song, - LOL so we loved that group and the songs.
@dellison58 Google ' Mike Nesmith profile at Edge' and go there. Then reconsider your comment about Peter being the most intellectual of the four. He's a smart man but he doesn't run a bi-annual think tank called Council On Ideas like Mike.
Can someone tell me the meaning of this song? He was in love with Joanne and what happened? Did they break up and she went off with another man? He says,"...my thoughts of her are kind..." which implies that either she's not with him or she died. My e-mail is: scriptbird@gmail.com I'd like to hear explanations of this song.
This is from Austin City Limits. Not sure what year. Mid-1980's maybe? A most haunting, beautiful song. If he never wrote anything else (though he certain has), writing this would be such an achievement and contribution to the world.
Nesmith's mom invented WhiteOut...Mike put up little bottles in a garage. IBM bought her out,I think. He plays several instruments and was leader of The Monkees! Used to envy the band...Batman was also on TV at the time. He's still GREAT!
Michael Nesmith is by far my favorite of the Monkees, but Peter Tork is the most accomplished musician, and his solo work has been too often overlooked. His voice is not as good as his playing but check out his stuff, you might be surprised.
Have always loved this song; yes, a haunting melody and that melancholy love that many of us have felt for an "impossible" love. Even in a moment, someone can touch our soul, and it stays with us our whole life.
Yeah, he was the only serious musician of the bunch.
This is a great posting. Thanks for sharing. :) I have this Austin City Limits performance on VHS from when it originally aired. :P Could you post the other two songs that were played that night: "Laugh Kills Lonesome," and "Yellow Butterfly"? I would be most grateful.
@maximus118 Actually you're incorrect about them not writing their own songs. Check the credits on their albums, and you'll see Michael Nesmith wrote a large number of their songs, some of which were big hits. Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork also contributed quite a few tunes. You're entitled to your opinion, of course. But a little fact checking is always nice.
Always keeping close to his country & western roots (see that Hawaiian guitar?) mike could always sing a pretty country tune! Must be that Texas air...Jim Reeves had it too.
Hey Robert, If you're out there, this is Barbara. Think back to 1972 and the first time you told me about this song and why you wrote it. Do you still feel regret that your mom sold the rights to it? Are you still composing? Do you ever wonder what became of the fair haired Joanne?
so nice to really see him play and sing. was hoping to find a utube version of him singing "Sweet Young Thing" from the Monkee Days, but this song always touched me deeply. his presence exudes a grounded natural man, comfy in his own skin.
Suprised he and Ronstadt never paired up to sing, what with her doing his "Different Drum' song in Linda's Stone Ponies daze ;}
great video! Mike Nesmith is an awesome songwriter...The Monkees had 3 really good singers (sorry Pete) and lots of great music; but it took a solo hit to realize Mr. Nesmith's talent...thanks for posting this...a nice surprise
I don't think the Monkeys had any GREAT singers but, as novelty acts go, they did have a few very pleasant & memorable ditties. This might be the closest to a great song, though it never really rose to that level.

No need to say "sorry" to Pete. What he lacked vocally, he more than made up for musician wise. He played more instruments than any other member of that great orchestra (The Monkees). And, let's not forget his awesome song writing (although all 4 wrote pretty tough).
True - Nesmith wrote several enduring classics. If you are a fan, check out his "Tropical Campfires" album... some great originals there... it was also the last album with Red Rhodes (steel player). It contains an unbelievably excellent cover of "Brazil" sung by Nesmith entirely in Spanish... that song alone is worth the price of the CD. Check it out!
WOW!!!! Just like revisitng your all time favorite sermon performed by an awesome preacher at a far too cool Church! Michael Nesmith is outstanding, and his band is just plain awesome!!
