  • Still my favorite Mike Nesmith song.

  • Mike should have gone into country music instead of playing that Monkee's crap music.

  • Is that John Jorgenson playing guitar?

  • He is still in great form. His voice is still excellent.

  • I love this song. My parents bought the album! This is a great version. Mike really was the only musician on the Monkees. He was a great innovator and guess what kids, he might even be the father of the music video!

  • today is his 69th birthday...happy birthday mike...winner of the first grammy for a video...ever!...

  • Absolutely gorgeous. I got chills so many times. Love to YOU Papa Nez!!

  • wow

  • Great song with a great melody. Magnificent that most punters dont realise that it's about a cow.

  • Is it true that Steven Stills auditioned for the Monkees but Peter Tork beat him in stead?

  • Love the way Mike changes tempo when performing his already great songs.

  • MIKE NAILS IT HERE

  • I was 13 when the Monkees came out. I never took them seriously, which probably was the intention of their producers. 30 or more years later I was captivated by this tune as sung by Frank Ifield. Years after that - now - I finally downloaded the Ifield version and have been listening to it. I was surprised to see that Mike Nesmith is the writer! Great song, and Nesmith has a new fan. I'm very impressed.

  • It was until recently that I realized just how talented he was/is.

  • The late, great, Red Rhodes on pedal steel.

  • I forgot all about this song, until I heard it on a rebroadcast of am.top 40,on satelite radio, do I went to you tube to see if it was on here and there it was.

  • WHO`s on STEEL Guitar here ? Red? Ralph? I Know it`s John J on guitar but who else is here?

  • Mike looked sexy here!!

    Dawn

  • The missing member to Crosby , Stills ,Nash and Young , It's not too late Boys ! Tom Petty could use some good back up too .

  • well done you have moving pictures not a record cover or stupid photos

  • the hold she had for me was much stronger than her love she had for me.......I remember her well.

  • This was filmed on AUSTIN CITY LIMITS on the University of Texas campus. Thanks for posting. I'm using this song in a screenplay I've written.

  • Who knew a Monkee could write such a beautiful song. Who knows what great music he may have wrote if not playing a teen idol.

  • Just look at his eyes...he is just so into the song as if he was singing it for the 1st time. Beautiful. Thanks for posting!

  • I actually like this more then any of the Monkees songs, my parents had Mike's album, First National Band, darn cool!

  • this is the only song i've heard that used my name which is kinda cool :)

  • This was from Austin City Limits in the early 1990s.

  • looks like Kato Kaelin playing guitar

  • Lovely, lovely.......one of our most beautiful songs.....he was his own person!

  • Great song! The talent of the Monkee's, was way under rated!

  • this song still brings me to my knees 35 years later

  • Great quality video recording! I like that he slowed the song down to savor the lyrics. I notice alot of 70s bands during live concerts speed up their song which I don't like.

  • Thanks for sharing the first decent video of a Nesmith recording.

  • Such a sad song.

  • Mike was just an awesome song writer and musician

  • So beautiful ... so plaintive and sung from the heart. I've always love this song.

  • On the MONKEYS he was really the ONLY musician.

  • @starfish50 That is incorrect. Peter Tork was a musician before interviewing for The Monkees, and a music teacher after the show. He probably played more instruments than the others combined. (Also the most intellectual of the four.) That being said, Mike Nesmith is still my favorite singer of the four, and this song, so beautifully written, shows such insight for a young man.

  • @dellison58 - Your right. Each were talented in their own ways. My best friends use the MONKEYS as their thyme song, - LOL so we loved that group and the songs.

  • @dellison58 Google ' Mike Nesmith profile at Edge' and go there. Then reconsider your comment about Peter being the most intellectual of the four. He's a smart man but he doesn't run a bi-annual think tank called Council On Ideas like Mike.

  • Bloody Gorgeous

  • Thanks for sharing this. I saw this performance when it was originally shown was blown away by it.

  • Love this song, and my name is Joanne...This song made me love the name even more.

  • When was this recorded?

  • @stadalberts

    it was 1993

  • @ss73ss Thanks.

  • @stadalberts In 1971 or 1972 it was released.

  • He was always my favorite Monkee by far... (even though I wasn't alive then, lol)...

    I loved him so.

And yet, imagine my face--I had no idea he'd grown older to be such a GOOD looking man. My-my; -whistles!-

    You're a good boy, Michael...

    <3.

  • still sounded true to form in 92, too......*sigh*...

  • Great songs and a wonderful voice... and as some stated here.. a very much underrated artist.

  • always liked Mike Nesmith the best of all the Monkees........thanks for posting this....I have never gotten sick of this tune..........

  • It's such a shame that so many people have no idea how great a talent Mike is. One of the greatest melodies ever.

  • This is from Austin City Limits. Not sure what year. Mid-1980's maybe? A most haunting, beautiful song. If he never wrote anything else (though he certain has), writing this would be such an achievement and contribution to the world.

  • @Cyclist051 It's actually circa 1992, that's when he was out promoting his then album ,Tropical Campfires.

  • i named my monkey after this song

  • i luv u monkey man

  • Nesmith's mom invented WhiteOut...Mike put up little bottles in a garage. IBM bought her out,I think. He plays several instruments and was leader of The Monkees! Used to envy the band...Batman was also on TV at the time. He's still GREAT!

  • I agree!! I've been listening to his solo stuff for years. Very clever lyrics and a great voice.

  • What year was this?

  • The voice still sounds great. Michael Nesmith was always my favorite Monkee. Still is.

  • Mike -love ya man.

    xox

  • I named my daughter after this song.

  • Michael Nesmith is by far my favorite of the Monkees, but Peter Tork is the most accomplished musician, and his solo work has been too often overlooked. His voice is not as good as his playing but check out his stuff, you might be surprised.

  • That was his mother that invented Liquid Paper.

  • i thank mike for white out his grandmother invented it.and he is a great singer to.

  • That's really nice. Thanks.

  • Have always loved this song; yes, a haunting melody and that melancholy love that many of us have felt for an "impossible" love. Even in a moment, someone can touch our soul, and it stays with us our whole life.

Yeah, he was the only serious musician of the bunch.

  • Nice. Thanks for posting this!

  • This is a great posting. Thanks for sharing. :) I have this Austin City Limits performance on VHS from when it originally aired. :P Could you post the other two songs that were played that night: "Laugh Kills Lonesome," and "Yellow Butterfly"? I would be most grateful.

  • Care to post a link to your music maximus118? I'd love to hear your songs.

  • @maximus118 Actually you're incorrect about them not writing their own songs. Check the credits on their albums, and you'll see Michael Nesmith wrote a large number of their songs, some of which were big hits. Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork also contributed quite a few tunes. You're entitled to your opinion, of course. But a little fact checking is always nice.

  • A very serious performer, songwriter and one of the most creative of all the monkees, We love you Mike. I am proud to call you a fellow texan,,

  • @Texas49201 Me too! Moving to Texas 31 years ago was the best decision I ever made. Love Texas and I love the music created by Texas musicians.

  • goddamn master, beautiful . i bet bob dylan digs this song . oh yeah

  • Always keeping close to his country & western roots (see that Hawaiian guitar?) mike could always sing a pretty country tune! Must be that Texas air...Jim Reeves had it too.

  • This song unleashes a flood of sensations and associative memories! Go Mike, go!

  • just sent this version to my daughter----Joanne.

Let it be a reminder to ring more often or do you want to be classified as to what he allegedly wrote it about?? HA,HA

  • Beautiful....

  • So beautiful. One of my all time favorite songs

  • The pedal steel guitar at 4:10 is absolutely spectacular...

  • IS IT TRUE THE SONGS ABOUT A COW ?

  • really great songwriter musician, very much under-rated in his day,but nevertheless a great musician

  • That performance put me into a spell. Fabulous.

  • I've always loved this song! What a claas act Mike Nesmith has always been...not to mention the only one to sing a song with my name! lol

  • Hey Robert, If you're out there, this is Barbara. Think back to 1972 and the first time you told me about this song and why you wrote it. Do you still feel regret that your mom sold the rights to it? Are you still composing? Do you ever wonder what became of the fair haired Joanne?

  • I have loved this song since I first heard it in the early 1970s. Whatever happened to Mike Nesmith? He was a GREAT composer.

  • This song takes me way back, too. He sure sounds good, and has aged very nicely. Such a rich sounding voice.

  • One of the greatest songs to come out of the 60's.

  • LOVE IT

  • so nice to really see him play and sing. was hoping to find a utube version of him singing "Sweet Young Thing" from the Monkee Days, but this song always touched me deeply. his presence exudes a grounded natural man, comfy in his own skin.

    Suprised he and Ronstadt never paired up to sing, what with her doing his "Different Drum' song in Linda's Stone Ponies daze ;}

  • Brings back memories. Love this song.

  • Wasn't that just great?

  • Always liked this song. Excellent rendition!

  • Mike is a very underrated songwriter/musician. He deserves much more respect and acknowledgment than what the industry has given him!!

  • @anticorpration That's very true But at least they PAID him.

  • Great song . Great voice. Beautiful falsetto. Love this!

  • Love this song, the lIVE AT THE pALAIS VERSION IS EXCELLENT

  • great video! Mike Nesmith is an awesome songwriter...The Monkees had 3 really good singers (sorry Pete) and lots of great music; but it took a solo hit to realize Mr. Nesmith's talent...thanks for posting this...a nice surprise

  • I don't think the Monkeys had any GREAT singers but, as novelty acts go, they did have a few very pleasant & memorable ditties. This might be the closest to a great song, though it never really rose to that level.

  • Mickey Dolenz ia a GREAT singer...listen to Pleasant Valley Sunday...Mike Nesmith is a GREAT singer...listen to What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round...and Joanne was not a Monkees song

  • No need to say "sorry" to Pete. What he lacked vocally, he more than made up for musician wise. He played more instruments than any other member of that great orchestra (The Monkees). And, let's not forget his awesome song writing (although all 4 wrote pretty tough).

  • Love this song, one of the most haunting, beautiful songs ever, in my opinion.

  • @oldcodyjr - I agree. Beautiful song

  • I always loved this song. It brought back so many beautiful memories. Thanks for posting.

  • Happy 67th Mike! Please get out on the road!

  • This is amazing!!! Thank you for posting!

  • it is Austin city limits..

  • STELLAR!!!!

  • Red Rhodes on steel!

  • in my experience all these creative guys love strong attractive women like Joanne

  • Really nice....

  • still got that high note :) very rare at this age

  • great song, gave me goosebumps from the memories. Is he still living?

  • Oh yeah, he just records now because we wants to,

  • WOW!!!! Just like revisitng your all time favorite sermon performed by an awesome preacher at a far too cool Church! Michael Nesmith is outstanding, and his band is just plain awesome!! Thanks again to ss73ss(GOOD WORK) and, of course, You Tube you and NES are just THE BEST, by all means keep 'em comin'! ROS everywhere!

  • Thanks MIke a great song - About Paul Newmans wife Joanne - sadly Paul is no longer with us. ( great actor and race car driver ) He will be missed -

  • thanks for writing a song called....JOANNE!!

  • Awesome song, Mike, thank you for sharing that little glimpse of heaven, man. and you guys posting this version and others on youtube deserve a round of applause!

  • God bless you mike what a song.

  • john jorgenson on the guitar. who's on pedal steel?

  • That's Orville J. "Red" Rhodes. He played steel on most of Nez's solo records.

  • This has got to be from Austin City Limits-right? If it is, I must have missed it.

  • @daleahill Yep, Its Austin City.... At the time Nes was goin to head up theyre

New music video dept. as Pres.. things fell thought.. Nes split.. and PBS canned his performance .. Was really great to see this production..

  • God, that was beautiful.

  • More More More. I am a big Nesmith fan

  • Wow. Amazing.

Just saw him perform with The Boxmasters in VR3D. He still sounds incredible.
