This music is close to the true human nature, I think.

One's got to appreciate Zakir Hussain's and the other artists' patience, listening to this monologue (and this is part-2!), just waiting for their bit to start. It's beautiful music, no doubt, but so lengthy! I think this is the main reason classical music doesn't strike a chord with the masses.

@mnair77 I do agree to a certain extent. And these artistes cater to these audiences and the general masses when it is appropriate. One thing I do wish to bring up is that true connoisseurs are believers that if this music wasn't as lengthy as it is, the performance would undoubtedly be incomplete. Some Tabla players refuse to play without a sufficient alaap. Some people can listen to over an hour of just alaap, and some people can't...

@mnair77 i agree to you that alap is not so appreciable by general audiences. the performances at such concerts by these maestros are not meant for just entertainment-- they are also for the educational purpose. these classical artists do bring out albums, which we can say are `semi-classical', and these albums though have a lot of classical base are to the large extent meant for entertainment and are readily appreciable by masses.

@mnair77 @mnair77 the problem is not with classical music, its more that todays peoples masses arent willing to pay attention to the real beauty of this kind of music (which indeed has to develop itself over some time). unfortunately today people "consume" music in tiny bits of few minutes so that listening to music for them becomes a short enyojment like watching tv or chewing a bubble-gum. classical indian music is not a "consumption" thing, its a living entity wich has to develop itself.
