@rnotlee I never said that? What I meant is, most people who receive an update prompt push it off to a later date so that makes them lazy when all they have to do is click a few buttons; or people who don't know how to manage what updates they want to install simply install of them--which sometimes are just useless features Microsoft likes to push onto Windows users. Chromebook would be perfect for these people because they wouldn't even know it's happening.
I actually like to have control over my updates and applications... I have Windows Updates set to manual so I pick and choose what to install. This is basically so that people who are lazy and with no knowledge of computer software don't have to be bothered to take an hour (not even, but that's the longest time I've ever had to update my laptop) of their time to do it themselves.
@JunkRulesHinerd I have a Chromebook, and it's really efficient at downloading and applying updates. Basically, it doesn't tell you anything, but you get a little green notification by the wrench menu saying that it's already finished. Click that menu, it'll ask you to reboot. Eight seconds later, it's back with all your tabs.
Those aren't just security updates either, massive feature updates are pushed this way.
That's crazy. I just spent two days updating a friend's laptop that never received updates because the system was turned off at the time the updates were to install. Frankly I'm sick of Microsoft updates.
If my browser is always available, and I mean 24/7 365 days a year, then my browser has made me a happy and more productive man. Chrome is the best. It is the future of web browsing, and yes I am truly convinced of that now. Forever Chrome. Aragorn@igoogle.com
So is chromebook a new laptop company like... microsoft or apple? or is it just a name like acer, compaq, dell etc, or is it just a web browser like opera, mozilla, google chrome? I DON'T GET IT PLEASE SOMEONE RESPOND TO ME.
@100DUE Well. It uses Samsung and Acer laptops, so it's not a brand name like that. Google would be the company like Microsoft and Apple, and Chromium OS is the operating system, like Windows 7 or Max OSX. The Chromium operating system bypasses what most other operating systems do. In effect, the operating system is your web browser, and vice-versa. No desktop, and things aren't even saved to your laptop, but a server. A Chromebook is just a laptop with Google's Chromium OS. Hope that helped!
@100DUE no Chromebook is an operating system like Macintosh or Windows but the only thing Chromebook does is being connected to the Internet. This is why it becomes much faster than any other OS.
What if I don't like unknown things happening "behind the scenes" such as Google uploading private data and causing privacy issues like they always do.
Actually, what it REALLY does (as of now, I'm in the Test Pilot Program) is that it tells you that it updated, and asks you to quickly restart. (it does take about 8 seconds though)
Linux Mint has a nice update manager. I will stick with linux Mint and Windows in case my internet has problems however when the web becomes more accessible and there are cheaper costs for internet I might consider Chromebook.
Autoupdate never annoying me. Besides, I feel happy everytime I saw an update. About Crome OS, I always have to use it with an Internet Connection. What if I don't have an Internet Connection? So thank you, I'll stick with Windows or MAC.
Wow! Google think that automatic updates are an advantage! On a pc you can choose to update, on this you'll go to use it and you're stuck waiting for the daMn thing to update. Googles first OS is happening again!!!
It'll download the update slowly (this is on purpose, so that you can use the interwebs while you wait, including apps and stuff) and when it's all done downloading, it'll let ya know that it's finished. You then go to the wrench icon (the settings, if you use Chrome, you know what I mean) and select "Restart Chrome to apply Updates". You'll be back online in about 8 seconds (a tad less actually).
If you dont know how to update windows software or are to lazy then you're just stupid. Windows supports by far the most and it is definitely worth taking 5 extra seconds to update and have better variety of programs.
I think you are missing something? Its linux, most linux distros have a nice and easy non-naging package manager such as pacman ( archlinux )
Okay, it's not hard to run one command? `pacman -Syu` update whenever you want.
BTW: Using a real distro you can minimise the packages installed and have firefox instead of chrom/e,ium(-browser)?/ :) But again gnome3 is sure a great interface.
@jamesitegen The problem isn't the difficulty of typing 'pacman -syu' the problem is KNOWing your suppose to type that at all... and why type when you can click?
But... I live in Australia! We have limited bandwidth! Do I seriously have to re-download apps EVERY TIME I OPEN ONE? What about if I'm away from home with no wi-fi?!
This thing sounds... remarkably inefficient to run.
@filmguru You don't download the application anymore than you download YouTube every time you use it, which you do, but that's a different story. The high bandwidth stuff that makes apps GBs in size (the data, the actual framework behind the interface) is all on Google's server and stays there. The interface is just HTML.
It's a great strategy, if you don't mind all your documents on the web.
And what if there is no available internet connection and you need a program, that's on the web, to finish your work on time? I bet that will suck!
I'll stick with Win 7/Ubuntu on my laptop.

Don't worry, all you gotta do is being naive, while we put in hundreds of updates, all making your computer slower and slower for each day.
Less time taking care of your computer.
More time deleting unwanted update.
