I like this version. It doesnt compete with Bill Withers', and he doesnt even try to hold a note for 18 seconds like Bill but I like the toned down, almost melancholic feel that Maroon 5 brought to this song. They didnt try to better the original, but put their own spin on it. Surely thats what a good cover song should be like!

I like it, I love Adam and Bill Withers. I also just like what the song stands for. It shows the influences that have inspired Adam's career I don't think he could have come across better. Actually, the vocalist sounds pretty good but besides Bill Withers singing what made Lovely Day such a great song was that funky bass guitar.  I think this would have been a great cover if they hadn't chose to leave that one very important element out of the song.

I agree that this version is not as "bright" as Bill Withers' rendition (which, by the way, isn't as "bright" as the version by The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M.), but it has an introspective tenderness to it that the original doesn't have. I think it is a gorgeous take on a classic song, and complements the original extremely well. Not very often that I can say that about covers. I'm impressed.

As big as a Maroon 5 fan I am, I'll admit that Adam didn't capture the joyful, upbeat essence of the original.

What he did do was create a soothing, laid back vibe that I can't help feel would be perfect in a lounge with a martini in hand or quietly played in bed with that special someone during pillow talk =)
