Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of my favorite movies. As a woman I appreciate a film where the guy is devastated by a break up, not a woman crying for months and finding new love. Haha and the women we're both strong and clever. I love it.
I loved Sarah Marshall, but I do agree there are too many comedies like there where the rather "sloppy guy" (being Segel!! I don't understand why anyone would see Brand that way, he's a very handsome man) gets the perfect girl... whereas media with less-than-perfect women getting the great guy are often soaked in pitty or fairytale-unrealistic cliches.
marica i think may have been missing the point, it doesnt matter if the girls are good characters the movie isnt about the girls, the movie is about the guy, and what happens to him after the breakup, the women are just crutches
I love the reviews. Dont agree with this one. I thought the women were very fleshed out Jason Segel is a man. Most men write from the male perspective. All the characters are real, Sarah Marshall isnt evil she's real, same with Peter. He pushed her away. Everyone is essentially a good person who makes bad choices. I liked it.
Why are directors/writers with faces like Mr. Potatohead casting themselves opposite beautiful women? Zach Braff, the pudgy schlub who wrote 'Knocked Up'....
I'm a 21 year old male, and I love good witty dialogue in a film, it's what keeps me interested, there doesn't have to be sex on the screen to keep younger people in the seats, not all of us are as immature as marcia seems to think, and can enjoy a film simply for the witty dialogue and awkward situations. I agree with Lorenzo's point of view 100%.
I don't see how a male director and writer can effectively make a movie from a female perspective. It's an unfair expectation to have considering that all the movies from the Apatow camp has been from a male perspective, which I find interesting because it shows the vulnerability and feelings of guys for a change.
Those of us out in the other side of the Atlantic will certainly never see the film, as it is unlikely to be released. However, it des not seem we will miss much. Regarding films about a woman's point of view, I think Tamara Jenkins would have a lot to say about putting together her Slums of Beverly Hills, a 1995 film which did, I think, remakably and universally, address a young woman's insecurities about making her strides into adulthood, to mention one woman;'s point of view
I am really not liking how the man here is being completely overbearing to the woman! He's talking over her and he's talking down to her and he's dismissing all of her criticisms b/c he doesn't like them! As if they're not worth merit. It's very frustrating!
I don't understand why she's complaining about female perspective. Romantic comedies are always have the story told from a female perspective. Why not have one from a man's perspective? It's a refreshing change.
I think Lorenzo has it right here. Movies like knocked up, superbad, and now this are about and for a generation that is failing to launch. Its humor about awkwardness, base humor and enelegant situations....was woody allen much diffrent? I think there are many strong female characters in movies today in Avaitor, Serenity, ..oh well off point. Anyway, This is a funny movie, not citizen kane. Thanks for the review. Can you review some less recent movies like Jaws, Alien, and.fightclub
it is not that the generation is failing to launch (a ridiculous term), it is that society's organizational structure has changed. people just can't go off and raise a faimly and buy a home and bring in a large income. to tag people with the word 'failure' shifts the blame onto individuals. if this perceived failure is occurring en masse, it shows it is social organization that is at fault.
I love watching the banter between these two. It's fun to watch these folks that seem like what me and my movie buff friends will be like when we are set in our opinions and perspectives. Neither of them back down from their points of view. Just a joy!
"Comidia del Arte'? This ain't exactly Harlequin and Columbine, kids!
Still, I get your point. I think that there are in-roads like "Ugly Betty" on TV and such, but to this day, people find it hard to believe that females have a hard time replacing men.
I think that she is right on. There isn't that many women movies that are told in the women's perspective. He frankly, comes off as a bit of a chauvanist.
Actresses always complain about the lack of good scripts for women. I say there are few good scripts for men as well. Most the films that are shown in the theater you can't pay me to see.
If an actress wants a good script they should learn the craft and either write their own or work with writers to develop their own scripts.
Nia Vardalas wrote her own script (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and ended up creating the highest grossing Romantic Comedy ever.
Bingo. Not just women. Ethnic minorities as well. Being African-American, I wrote a script about my life when I was 15, lonely and a wunderkind writer.
Agreed, he was a bit of a turd in this one- he was quite a bit more insulting to Marcia than usual (usually its only one or two off-color comments or jabs).
I also think its a bit naive of him to say all that is needed is for women to write the scripts they want to see. He KNOWS the movie business & knows how difficult it is to get even good original writing & scripts by anyone. Even if its a good script, they can reject it, or they will edit it to death until its typical Hollywood crap.
The MPAA has always allowed male frontal nudity in R rated films as long as the penis is limp and the exposure doesn't occur in the context of a sexually explicit scene.
she needs to cash in her pension and buy a sense of humour. Perhaps two.

Judd Apatow does it for me. He's simple, he makes jokes that you dont need a setup for, and each movie he does takes the average guy seriously.
He's no Hitchcock, but he's getting there.
