It's long been a story in my husband's family that they were related to Billy. No historian has been able to find out Billy's history, but we know where my husband's MrCarty came from in
Ireland and even had a Catherine McCarty immigrate to Indianapolis before moving down to
@JettRink50 A lot of historians don't comment on the McCarty family. These people have other priorities and are more interested in their own version of events. But really, the path of the family is very sketchy and requires deep and and calculated research. Michael Wallis, who provides the best look at Billy and his Mother, even admits to the difficulty of events and places. You should check out his autobiography 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'. This includes a stop in Indiana.
It's not unusual for families, moving from one region of the country to another, or one country to another, to change their last name. Last name changes were much more common and accepted in the 19th Century West. People settling the West territories quickly established relations with found relatives in order to obtain a safe and secure life in an land that oftentimes did not have established laws and were dominated by autocratic police rule.
@phillipduncanhunter ... This was the case in the 1870's-1890's New Mexico Territory. When Henry and his Mother moved into Northern New Mexico they adopted the 'Antrium' last name because they had relatives with the 'Antrium' family. Henry McCarty became Henry Antrium, then, later, when Henry became closer to his other New Mexico relatives, the Bonneys', he took on the name William Bonney. ...
@phillipduncanhunter This was very common as East Coast immigrants dropped their last name to begin again in a new land or territory with a new identity. If a particular name was recognized and respected by the likes of a territorial gang such as the Santa Fe Ring, then more doors could be open and the individual would be accepted into the territorial society.
I believe, based on Michael Wallis' autobiography 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride', that Billy and his Mother spent time in New York, Kentucky, Indiana, then Whitchta where they had a laundry business. She developed lung/breathing problems and moved to Denver and then Northern New Mexico. The family relations along the way were the Antriums' and the Bonneys'
My husband is supposedly related to Billy. We do know Billy's mother lived in
Indianapolis for awhile, coming from New York. He has a lot of McCarty relatives but no one in Ireland will even look for evidence because they don't want to find out they
are related to an outlaw. The place his McCarty's came from was Toomard.
@MultiThunderstruck My full name is Jared Young John Henry McCarty Chastain. I was named after Billy. He is supposed to be my illegitimate Great Great Grandpa. After he "died" my great great grandma (that he fucked) married (and fucked) a small time bandit and horse theif named John Phillip Chastain. Billy's child was born and then he fucked his half sister and that all narrows down to me. That's how the family tree tells it anyway. :)
@uzavas True. Only a coward would shoot someone in the back. Garrett was also a coward. Billy was unarmed and half asleep when Garrett killed him. Only a coward would kill an unarmed man. Billy was a good person even though he broke the law. He tried to do the right thing but the damn rich people wanted everything to happen their way and wasn't having none of it. If anyone in Lincoln County was an American hero it was Billy.
I had heard that an angry rancher named Jesse Wayne Brazel killed Pat Garrett whil he was riding to Las Creuces. That is kind of funny though. Shot in the back while takin a piss. He deserved the most indecent way to go to hell for the killin' of Billy the Kid.
@JaredChastain1 Garrett was hired by the Santa Fe Ring. Their mission was to take territorial land by any means necessary. Garrett knew what he was getting into. He made his choice.
@phillipduncanhunter I know that. I still hate him for killing Billy the Kid. Garrett was nothing but chicken shit. That Santa Fe Ring was a bunch of dumbasses to. Billy done the right thing. The law wasn't working right and was doing alot of illegal stuff for all of the rich people. Billy tried to make things right. I respect Billy and he's supposed to be my Great Great Grandpa. I didn't believe that at first but it's on the family tree. I also resemble him slightly so it's a possibility.
Garrett covered for him as he went south to Mexico. Ended up teaching salsa lessons and traditional tango. Started a travelling dance group called Menudo who decades later transitioned into more of a singing group. He was smooth with the ladies and had happy feet so there was no reason to maintain an outlaw life down there. Too bad he was half a generation before television, I think he could've been as big as Charlie Chaplin.
The family was in a lot of places in the 19th Century - New York, Kentucky, Whichita, KS (where Henry spent time as young boy), Denver, Colorado and then Northern New Mexico. There were related families to the McCarty family - Antrium and the Bonneys. While in New Mexico Henry changed his name and took these last names and changed his first name to Billy. A lot of people claim they are related to Billy and some of the family could have settled in Texas.
@phillipduncanhunter theres alot of mcCartys though, my last names mcCarty im in california though, my dads grandparents are from somewhere southern states

What is lost in the recent talk about a 'pardon' for Billy the Kid is all the crimes and murders conducted by the 'Santa Fe Ring'. New Mexico was not a state at the time. It was a territory and this gang did basically anything it wanted to do and did it so that they would not have to account to anyone. All I've heard about is the 21 people Billy allegedly killed, which, by all historical accounts is not true.
Billy: You were my favourite of outlaws and western heroes. You were my only true love, throughout my life. You and nobody else has managed to catch this beautiful heart of mine. I love you, forever. <3 You got the ladies everywhere you went. You loved life and lived it to the fullest. I am in deepest respect for you and your life. You were handsome, boyish good looks. I loved you, Billy...in a blaze of glory. The kid, the best in the world!
@warrkrymez The 19th Century West was made up with people who sported different names, nick-names,and pseudo-names. William Bonney was known in his lifetime by three names - Henry McCarty, Henry Atrium, and William Bonney (aka Billy the Kid). I think Michael Wallis has made the best effort at researching and trailing the real Billy. If you would like to read more go to the my space site /monorryoung and read the blog review on Wallis' non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride
@phillipduncanhunter He went by Kid Antrim when he was riding with the Regulators. They didn't hang the Billy the Kid handle on him until after Alex McSween was murdered. At that point Billy became leader of the Regulators by default and the media gave him the nickname he's most commonly known by.
Like Henry McCarthy, aka Billy the Kid, a lot of cowboys and rustlers that Billy rode with used aliases. The Michael Wallis autobiography has a number of names and a few friends that Billy rode with in New Mexico and Arizona. Check it out, you may find your relative.

why am i the "wierdo" when I (unlike billy the kid and jeffrey dahmer) have NEVER shot ANYONE and EATEN anyone. You , perhaps , should have stayed in school a bit longer or taken advantage of the educational system. Oh, and "serial killer" solidifies the comparison between Billy the kid and Dahmer...as well as Ted Bundy and numerous others of the same desciption. SERIAL KILLERS.
That's true. There are a lot of accounts. Most were put together for self-serving purposes. His early life is sketchy and fragmented. but I think Michael Wallis' nonfiction book maybe the best.effort so far. If you would like to read a short review of this book go to the Myspace site /monorryoung and read the blog - The Pirate Prince of the Pecos - a commentary on Author Michael Wallis' non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'
I recomend people go to Lincoln New Mexico Ive been there about 20 times it still has letters that Billy the Kid wrote to the governor and the Jailhouse that Billy the Kid killed Bell it even has bullet holes
henry McCarty was him Original name. But he stole laundry at busted out of jail. He was a drifter then. At Fort Sumner, He changed his name to William H. Bonnie.
Willaim is his step father's name, Bonnie was his dad's name which died near the end of the Cilvil War. Hope this Helps. ;-)
The old tin type picture that everyone thinks is Billy the Kid may not even be the real Billy the Kid. The descriptions of him from reporters don't match the tin type photograph. He was supposedly 5'7, and skinny, with blondish brown hair, and blue eyes. The person in the tin type photo looks like he could lose some weight...
If you would like to learn more go to Bob Young's myspace site - /monorryoung. There you will find a few of Bob's credits and a synopsis of the screenplay.
brushy bill roberts was lying bcuz if billy realy did live dunt u think he wuold hav done somtin else? like kill more? billy died but his legacy doz still liv on
billy the kid was irish, the irish where always the best outlaws cause there crazy, haha, ned kelly was irish too, i read about an irish guy who was around the time of al capone but i cant remember his name, anyway he was a bad mutha,
The upcoming feature length film is not a docuementary. What you see here is a 'Preview' of a full length dramatic feature film. Obtaining Authorizations for picture releases and the cost of obtaining them for a 'Preview' did not make much sense. It is money better spent on the final production.
he could speak Spanish as well as a native. Bob Young,W. F. Hafer, Jimmy Ramage, Ablo Norman, Tom Turner, and L. L. Gamble also said Brushy was fluent in Spanish. The reason people think he was non-fluent in Spanish is because a myth started that Jarvis Garrett (depending on which version of the myth you heard) asked Brushy a question in Spanish at the meeting with Gov. Mabry, to which Brushy couldn't respond. This is false. Not one person who was at the meeting ever mentioned this happening.
I love billy the kid he is my favourite outlaw and i am obsessed with him he wasnt shot by Pat Garrett. Billy the kid was Brushy Bill Roberts and Brushy wasnt lying in 1950.
In may of 2005 the body of John Miller was exumed from the grave by former sherrif of Lincoln county,Tom Sullivan.DNA samples were taken and compared to that of the blood stain on the bench that the kid was laid on when he supposedly died.Aftrer the results came in the only comment was"What I know about is not what's written in history. What I know about this case differs from history."spoken by Steve Sederwall, former mayor of Capitan,N.M.,Sullivans partner in the case.Check it out at Wikipedia.
Accounts say Garrett got the drop on Billy. Personally, I find that hard to believe. Garrett was a tall lanky guy, very similar in height and physique to Conan O'Brien. He was suppose to be a friend that's how he got the advantage on the Kid. If you want to read more go to the Myspace site /monorryoung and read the blog - The Pirate Prince of the Pecos - a commentary on Author Michael Wallis' new non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'
Yes its true garrett did kill billy the kid, its a fact, dont let young guns give you that impression because that film is miles off. Read the book by robert M Utly on billy the kid, it will tell you accurate information. Garrett had an advantage over billy as pat was sitting in the darkened bedroom of pete maxwells house. Garrett was looking for the kid and it was past midnight.
Garett was sitting on the bed next to pete maxwell and was asking him if he had seen the kid, at that moment billy walked in, billy sensed the presence of a third person in the room. He could of course shot that unknown person but billy was staying in petes house and could have persumed garrett as a friend of petes. This was a mistake that costed him his life.
Garrett recognised billy's voice as he asked garrett who he was and so garrett fired off two rounds, the first hit billy in the heart and killed him instantly. It is proven a fact that billy was killed that night as friends of that residence stated that they witnessed his dead body and attended his burial.
Garrett and the kid were never friends but did know each other from the past, Garrett stated in his book that before billy was a wanted man he had seen and spoke to the kid in bars numourious times but did not know him well.
None of these pictures match up to who the video says there are, looks like the filmaker got lazy and chose random pictures of people to fill for the dialog. haha
I've finished reading Michael Wallis' new book on the Kid. If you want to read more go to the Myspace site /monorryoung and read the blog - The Pirate Prince of the Pecos - a commentary on Author Michael Wallis' new non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'

wonderful how people make these serial killers and psychos like billy the kid, jesse james and jeffrey dahmer pseudo-quasi HEROS. fuck them!!
KamenHanya 2 years ago
You want us to have sex with dead people ?
...Weirdo.
Oh and there is no comparison between Billy and Dahmer.
Ceaaa22 2 years ago 2
why am i the "wierdo" when I (unlike billy the kid and jeffrey dahmer) have NEVER shot ANYONE and EATEN anyone. You , perhaps , should have stayed in school a bit longer or taken advantage of the educational system. Oh, and "serial killer" solidifies the comparison between Billy the kid and Dahmer...as well as Ted Bundy and numerous others of the same desciption. SERIAL KILLERS.
KamenHanya 2 years ago
Lighten up, Francis.
Billy killed enemies who threatened him and his friends and he was a loyal friend.
Dahmer just wanted to kill, eat and fuck.

KISSMEMYFOOL69 2 years ago 3
That's true. There are a lot of accounts. Most were put together for self-serving purposes. His early life is sketchy and fragmented. but I think Michael Wallis' nonfiction book maybe the best.effort so far. If you would like to read a short review of this book go to the Myspace site /monorryoung and read the blog - The Pirate Prince of the Pecos - a commentary on Author Michael Wallis' non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'

The problem with Billy the Kid is there is that so much information is not confirmed about him so it is hard to figure out the historical character.

jamierourketen 3 years ago
Most people think that. He changed his name to avoid embarassment for his Mother. Thats what I have read.
jrdill1929 3 years ago
henry McCarty was him Original name. But he stole laundry at busted out of jail. He was a drifter then. At Fort Sumner, He changed his name to William H. Bonnie.
Willaim is his step father's name, Bonnie was his dad's name which died near the end of the Cilvil War. Hope this Helps. ;-)

The only picture that has been proven billy the kid is the one where he is standing with his winchester rifle
weroindamix 3 years ago 3
The old tin type picture that everyone thinks is Billy the Kid may not even be the real Billy the Kid. The descriptions of him from reporters don't match the tin type photograph. He was supposedly 5'7, and skinny, with blondish brown hair, and blue eyes. The person in the tin type photo looks like he could lose some weight...
streetbikerboy81 3 years ago
In the BTK Photo he had alot of jackets, belts, and weapons on him
KoltSunfriPictures 3 years ago
That could be the layers of clothing, leather vest, scarf, and so on. Also- the old cameras made people look a lot heavier as well.

Not one person who was at the meeting ever mentioned this happening.
daishaney100000 4 years ago
Not so sure about that 'brushy bill' crap. the old man couldn't speak Spanish, it was found, however everyone knew the real Kid could, fluently.

before garrett became a law man there was a warrent out for him aswell.
for taking some part in a rustling murder cant exactly remember.
Yep he was a traitor he basicly got pardoned so why not billy he saw another murder take place outside a saloon and was asked to get rid of the gun?!

I love billy the kid he is my favourite outlaw and i am obsessed with him he wasnt shot by Pat Garrett. Billy the kid was Brushy Bill Roberts and Brushy wasnt lying in 1950.
darkjedi454 4 years ago
In may of 2005 the body of John Miller was exumed from the grave by former sherrif of Lincoln county,Tom Sullivan.DNA samples were taken and compared to that of the blood stain on the bench that the kid was laid on when he supposedly died.Aftrer the results came in the only comment was"What I know about is not what's written in history. What I know about this case differs from history."spoken by Steve Sederwall, former mayor of Capitan,N.M.,Sullivans partner in the case.Check it out at Wikipedia.

I HATE PAT GARRET FUCKING TRAITOR
foolxTrunks 4 years ago 2
Accounts say Garrett got the drop on Billy. Personally, I find that hard to believe. Garrett was a tall lanky guy, very similar in height and physique to Conan O'Brien. He was suppose to be a friend that's how he got the advantage on the Kid. If you want to read more go to the Myspace site /monorryoung and read the blog - The Pirate Prince of the Pecos - a commentary on Author Michael Wallis' new non-fiction book 'Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride'
phillipduncanhunter 4 years ago
Yes its true garrett did kill billy the kid, its a fact, dont let young guns give you that impression because that film is miles off. Read the book by robert M Utly on billy the kid, it will tell you accurate information. Garrett had an advantage over billy as pat was sitting in the darkened bedroom of pete maxwells house. Garrett was looking for the kid and it was past midnight.
brogmyster 4 years ago
Garett was sitting on the bed next to pete maxwell and was asking him if he had seen the kid, at that moment billy walked in, billy sensed the presence of a third person in the room. He could of course shot that unknown person but billy was staying in petes house and could have persumed garrett as a friend of petes. This was a mistake that costed him his life.
brogmyster 4 years ago
Garrett recognised billy's voice as he asked garrett who he was and so garrett fired off two rounds, the first hit billy in the heart and killed him instantly. It is proven a fact that billy was killed that night as friends of that residence stated that they witnessed his dead body and attended his burial.
brogmyster 4 years ago
Garrett and the kid were never friends but did know each other from the past, Garrett stated in his book that before billy was a wanted man he had seen and spoke to the kid in bars numourious times but did not know him well.
