When i was young, the game i want it to play was GTA and SR, but my mom and dad would not let me, but when they did, they had a talk with me about the game, now im 14 and im still fine.

I'm a 15 year old boy and obv video games are my main hobby. I already told myself when I have kids, I will sit them down with a video game and let them harm someone in the game, I will make them understand that this is only a game and should stay in the game. I will tell them that doing this in real life will take them down a path they do not want to go down (unless it's a military game.) then I will make sure they understand this is wrong.
Honestly, (this may sound sick) I use video games (Gta, Cod, Halo) for stress, killing a person in a video game is not only good stress relieving for some people., it also stops you from murdering people in real life! If my friend said "omg im gonna go fucking murder this kid for slapping my books out of my hand" I would throw a controller in his hand, and tell him to play grand theft auto and tell him to kill everyone you see, instead of killing somone in real life, its much safer that way,

I have a friend who's uncle joined the army becuase he thought he new what to expect becuase he played Call of Duty, he only lasted 2 weeks of the training course.

Kids pay more attention to what you do rather than what you say. Saying something is wrong, and then intentionally exposing you and your kid to said wrong behavior (whether through watching TV or playing games) presents an internal conflict to the immature mind of a child. He/she sees a contradiction between what you say and do. He/she starts to wonder "Why, if Daddy said this is so wrong, do we intentionally watch it? It must not really be that bad after all."
You Obviously do not have kids. They are a Product of their environments and upbringing.
My daughter (14 going on 15) plays GTA and the such, but she and I have talked at length about what it means to emulate the actions of the video and it's real life ramifications. She understands this. I've taught her.

We've all gotten to know kids in a way their parents don't. we grow up with other kids and see other families operate. I've ALSO raised a child.
I've been raising my daughter with video games since she was old enough to know what they are. I've been a responsible parent with what I let her play, see, and interact with. I've explained to her in great detail the differences between reality and fiction. this is all a parent need do IF they intend to let them play mature games. It works.
A parent that cannot teach their kids these things needs to keep them from playing the games at all. Plain and simple. (and get the kid's I.Q checked) That's why there's an ESRB rating to begin with. So parents can know whats in the game!

Glenn Beck is kind of a mixed bag with me. I agree with some points he makes, but regarding video gaming, I disagree completely. You, on the other hand and despite open dissension, know where the responsibility truly lies: with the parents.

I grew up playing some pretty vulgar and violent video games (Doom, Duke Nukem, GTA, etc.), and I always understood, thanks to my parents, that they weren't meant to teach how to behave in real life because they are not reality. Although I associated bad behavior to playing video games before as if it were a cause and effect relationship, I don't truly believe that's the case. It's good to know there are people like you actively defended gaming.

There's no such thing as a perfect parent or person. I do agree with you that parents should teach their children the difference between right and wrong, but is teaching them that through words alone sufficient to make them understand? I don't think so.
It would be comforting to be able to believe that parents are the sole benefactors to raising their children, but I can't believe that because I know it isn't true. I would also like to believe that parents are all-knowing of what their children are doing at all times, but that isn't the truth. We live in a society in which it is normal to send your kids away for several hours, every weekday. Home schooling is an option, but the opportunity cost is too high for most couples.
GTA 4 is a fun game and all that jazz, but I have to agree with Glenn on this one. He's not saying we're training everyone to be killers. He says that in regards to children that are still developing their understanding of this world. If you've raised a child, you'd know they aren't exactly what you'd call "rational" at times. They don't always truly understand that people (or representations of people) do wrong things. Ever heard the excuse, "Well, he was doing it!"

I think this "game-blaming game" phase will pass eventually. Maybe not soon, but it's not near as heated as it used to be. It'll take time before game critics begin to see how the reality vs fantasy relation really works. It's just a new form of media that, just like the rock and psychedelic music from the 50's and 60's, scored controversy because of its nature. It was different, and violated the norms of society at the time. One day games will be accepted entertainment. Great video, L1!

I agree with you here They have no right to blame us Gamers for their short comings and inaccuracies. I mean look around you even if they did ban video games it's not gonna change the state of the world, there will still be terrorism and war and famine and death but all we'll have is a bunch of bored kids if and when I do have kids I'm gonna let them play what they want because that's how my parents did it with me and I'm not a violent person.

my mom used to tell me about those games and she told me that that wasn't real and i shouldn't try nothing like that and she started telling me those things not only for violent games but for animes with violence...my point here is that it is the responsability of the parent to teach right from wrong and it is the parents fault if their kid is stupid enough to do everything he sees on tv...thats why there is a rating system and parents are the ones who buy violent games for stupid kids

Kids pay more attention to what you do rather than what you say. Saying something is wrong, and then intentionally exposing you and your kid to said wrong behavior (whether through watching TV or playing games) presents an internal conflict to the immature mind of a child. He/she sees a contradiction between what you say and do. He/she starts to wonder "Why, if Daddy said this is so wrong, do we intentionally watch it? It must not really be that bad after all."

You Obviously do not have kids. They are a Product of their environments and upbringing.
My daughter (14 going on 15) plays GTA and the such, but she and I have talked at length about what it means to emulate the actions of the video and it's real life ramifications. She understands this. I've taught her.
Our society is what teaches our kids what they learn and they may do some bad things, but it's a parent's job to teach them right from wrong. plain and simple.

Glenn says that Games TEACH the same things the military teaches. Thats completely false! (I was a soldier for 11 years)
He says that the game teaches us to degrade women and that too is completely false. A parent can just as easily say to their kids that it's just a game and use it as a tool to teach their kids how NOT to act. THAT presents no conflict at all.
And if a parent cannot teach this simple lesson to their kids, then they shouldn't let them play the games.

As a parent, we can't always be there, but we strive to TEACH our kids how to act in a society FILLED with violence, sexuality, drugs, and temptations. We CAN do that.
I may not know what My daughter is doing 24 hours a day, But I have a lock on what shes doing for a vast majority of it.
Someday when you have kids you may see how it works. a responsible parent can have a massive positive impact on their kids.

Eddie Haskell syndrome is rampant (not just in kids, either). 14 year old is mature enough to understand that it's not okay to do something just because someone else is doing it or because they can watch it. The video game thing, I'd say, is a bigger problem with young kids

We've all gotten to know kids in a way their parents don't. we grow up with other kids and see other families operate. I've ALSO raised a child.
I've been raising my daughter with video games since she was old enough to know what they are. I've been a responsible parent with what I let her play, see, and interact with. I've explained to her in great detail the differences between reality and fiction. this is all a parent need do IF they intend to let them play mature games. It works.

A parent that cannot teach their kids these things needs to keep them from playing the games at all. Plain and simple. (and get the kid's I.Q checked) That's why there's an ESRB rating to begin with. So parents can know whats in the game!

Games TEACH nothing at all. The values of a family and the upbringing of the individual kid are it's teachers. If the game is TEACHING them, then the parent has FAILED.

I grew up playing some pretty vulgar and violent video games (Doom, Duke Nukem, GTA, etc.), and I always understood, thanks to my parents, that they weren't meant to teach how to behave in real life because they are not reality. Although I associated bad behavior to playing video games before as if it were a cause and effect relationship, I don't truly believe that's the case. It's good to know there are people like you actively defended gaming.

It would be comforting to be able to believe that parents are the sole benefactors to raising their children, but I can't believe that because I know it isn't true. I would also like to believe that parents are all-knowing of what their children are doing at all times, but that isn't the truth. We live in a society in which it is normal to send your kids away for several hours, every weekday. Home schooling is an option, but the opportunity cost is too high for most couples.

GTA 4 is a fun game and all that jazz, but I have to agree with Glenn on this one. He's not saying we're training everyone to be killers. He says that in regards to children that are still developing their understanding of this world. If you've raised a child, you'd know they aren't exactly what you'd call "rational" at times. They don't always truly understand that people (or representations of people) do wrong things. Ever heard the excuse, "Well, he was doing it!"

If video games teach kids to commit crimes then lets do away with games like "cops and robbers" and get rid of all water guns, any toy guns, paint ball guns etc. Let's just let them all play with barbies. i cannot believe that CNN made this speical, and i thought that fox news made that, but anyways i was raised the right way by my parents too, i too play video games, i however don't like the grand theft auto series, not because its violent but because it gets boaring after awhile, i rather play final fantasy (or halo, or even classic games from the NES, hell maybe the super snes) than GTA series. p.s. you should make a video showing how to get the MAME arcade emulator on a pc or laptop.

I think this "game-blaming game" phase will pass eventually. Maybe not soon, but it's not near as heated as it used to be. It'll take time before game critics begin to see how the reality vs fantasy relation really works. It's just a new form of media that, just like the rock and psychedelic music from the 50's and 60's, scored controversy because of its nature. It was different, and violated the norms of society at the time. One day games will be accepted entertainment. Great video, L1!

Wow you cant blame anything on games. i mean i personally have shot a gun and i'm 14 and no video game on the market can simulate the knock back of the gun. If you try to do half the things on video games in real life you'll kill yourself or seriously injure. My parents are involved in my life they monitor me constantly but they allow me to play these games because they know that i won't as he said jump of a bridge because i know i can't re-spawn.

But you hold a very good point in this video. Back before Video Gaming, if crime rates went up, there wasnt really anything to blame it on, so stupid claims like these never existed. But since video gaming, the media have just taken advantage of the fact that there are violent games around to blame on crime. But its not as if crime rates have gone up since video games, anyway!
