Doing another video today of me working on a 71 Mini. Give me a little bit, perhaps a day or two to edit it and make a new Plastic Media Blasting in action video and post it here. Some things I want to show are close ups, action shots, and perhaps even some 'problem' areas that come up.
@CaseyMcLaughalot All the Soda blasters I know can't recover their media, it get's flushed down the drain/sewers, and it's pretty caustic, not too sure your facts are correct.
I sweep it up into a collection port I built that pulls it up thru the ducting I installed, into the hopper for re-use, the worn out stuff (dust/paint/crap) gets pulled over to the dust collector.
You are right, but when I put my blast suit on, wear the helmet, with hoses all over the place, I feel like an undersea diver, everything slows down, can't move as fast, limited visibility, etc. Most everything is deliberate; movement, just walking is like being underwater!
I did media blasting for a little over a year. Plastic media as well. My compressor was a $40,000 dry sump electric system on 3 phase. Pushing an average of 90-95 psi. I loved my job and the outcome of the finished product. I recommend this service to anyone who wants to get something stripped! Good video.
@XLSAELEETUBE I had the pressure a bit too high in this video, speed has many trade offs, run media down fast; wear it out, or go slower and save the media.
whats the average amount that someone will charge someone to get there car blasted?what do you charge to do a complete car? whats the more expensive media or sand ?
Well, I can't speak for someone charging someone, I can speak for me, average, about $1500.00-1800.00 dollars for a complete car with rotisserie service; blasted underneath the car too. Sand is a media, however, I don't use sand; at all! I use Plastic blasting media.
PSI is not a concern per se, at the pot I have 40-50 PSI, at the nozzle 65 ft later it's down to about 20 or so PSI.
Yes, reusable.
Electric.
Pressure pot/vessel, not siphoned.
Need that size hose, the nozzle is a 7 in this video, way too big, since then, I'm using just #5. This video I'm not too pleased with, but, with the amount of hits I will keep it up there. Also, the pressure was a bit too high there in this video, I think I was at 30 PSI out the nozzle in this video.
same principle, except media blasting uses much lower air pressures, but higher air volume. When I re-watch this video, I see several things 'wrong', my blast nozzle is way too big, allowing way too much material to be expended...too fast, and I was not wearing my blast suit!
There's two numbers to answer your question. I will run thru my system on a car this size about 6,000 lbs of Plastic Media, I will lose/expend/wear out about 100 lbs if I really hammer it hard and crank up the pressure to do it faster. When I say crank up the pressure, that means go to 40 psi or 50 psi at the pot, nozzle pressure is half that.
Usually, the cars have the quarter panels removed. Yes, you are correct, if this stuff sits around it will collect moisture, so, I blow or vacuum it all out.

You put the hose in front, not over your shoulder but in front, and with that pressure and material I would get a little closer.

Thats a pretty serious sand blasting setup. Make Model Cost? Where did you buy it?

What colour did you re-paint the car, well done for youir hard work but would really like to know?.

@mr954 hey man ever tried aluminum oxide? its alot faster.

How do you clean/reclaim all of that media?
GeorgiaBoi70 1 year ago
@GeorgiaBoi70 Got a dust collector that sucks the media up, good media falls down into pot for re-use, dust goes to collector.

Why am I holding the hose this way? Because that's the way to do it.
mr954 1 year ago
why are you holding the blast hose like that?

so much easier than sanding! lol

@deadkey61 sure. tell 'em you want Plastic, with a slight mix of crushed glass to give it a good etch.

@ChivalrousCharm Thanks! I don't use that much air pressure though, I'm down in the 42 psi at the pot, 18-22 psi at the nozzle.

Wow! just 3 minutes..... and almost a good range of the rear quarter panel. Im wondering how long will it take to complete a honda civic hatch back.

So what is the optimum psi and cfm for what you are doing in this video?
6,000 lbs? Is it reusable?
Is your compressor gas or electric? How many hp?
Is it syphon or gravity fed?
That's a LARGE hose! What size nozzle is a #7?
Thanks! good video.

use bigger nozzle, with bigger compressor = job done quicker

Do you have to spend much time masking up potential traps where residue could fall and gather moisture?

Huh? It's a #7, and it's plenty big, just watch how fast I am stripping that Plymouth qtr panel!

I was being sarcastic. You could probably make a rocket pack if you had two of those things strapped to your back!
