  • great video. but you forgot these films:watership down, the triplets of belleville, anastasia, the prince of egypt, and quest for camelot [haven't seen that one but maybe i will].

p.s. have you seen the black cauldron?

  • Wow. Just, wow. I don't know how much more the repeat button can take, but this was beautiful.

  • 1. Anime is still fairly niche, especially in Western markets. Not as much as before, it's known, sure, but not exactly popular.

    2. Not all of these are good films/show, or even possessing of great animation.

    3. I'm really tired of people constantly smitten with nostalgia. Yes, a lot of this video is composed of great animation work, but much of it feels so very...dated. Probably not the right word. Animation (Western) is changing, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that.

  • @TheReaperNX

1: Anime is both popular and sacrosanct, with fans allowing no changes to formula and accepting flaws as inherent.

2: You're missing the point. These didn't have huge studio backing. This was went individual animators TRIED.

3: Dated? So is good story telling and movies without racism. Western Animation is remaining static and so is Anime. I wish both would reexamine where they came from and strive for something better then settling for less.

  • @bloodrunsclear What is the Wizard at :24 from? The credits were a little vague.

  • @Ranger313100

The wizard is from Siegfried. Awesome wizard, awesome wizard.

  • awesome dude

  • Sent chills down my spine. I absolutely loved how I got to see clips of movies from my childhood. :3 Thanks much!

  • Cool tribute. That's the kind of animation I like to see. Great inspirational video. I'll fave this to remind me I need to start animating again.

  • Awesome tribute!

  • wow beautiful man its sad to see alot of great animators like don bluth and alot of work from the 80s through early 70s get overshadowed by the shit nowadays, the material back then was so much more beautiful almost darkly portrayed with color, mad props brought back alot of nastalgia so i thank u in the forerun as well :D

  • @bloodrunsclear i agree with a lot of what you say. for what is worth I think western animation could be as good or better than anime. stuff like siegfried makes me think that. or pyrats. ( another trailer) the road to el dorado was a great film too from 2000. forgot to mention that

  • @mittROMNEY666

I'm sorry I blew up like that :/

    Pyrats was great :D

Actually you're probably going to think I'm insane, but I think anime and western works best when they join forces. Kingdom Hearts for all its sometimes irritating audience is an example of the two styles meshing seamlessly in mutual respect. Another was Macross one of my favorite animes of all time and even Avatar the Last Airbender.

We need to bring the two together, not distance them.

Not forget, but not obsess (I know...:/)

  • @bloodrunsclear im with you bro. seeing more east west hybrids would be pretty cool. I just want to see good animation, wherever its from :) anyway good discussion. peace

  • @mittROMNEY666

Thanks for putting up with me. I realize now I was the raging fanboy and I had no right to accuse you of the same.

I'm glad you seek out fine animation and I might just get over my slump and check out Redline now XD

    Peace

  • @bloodrunsclear i hate avatar and everything cameron has ever done. Im not talking about stories, im talking about the visuals, the actual animation, and to an extent the storytelling. In that anime has the west beat hands down - notice how an anime director includes a huge variety of camera angles and compositions, whereas most western animation uses very static and univentive camera angles and dull compositions. If you cant see how good the animation in redline is, then you must be blind

  • @mittROMNEY666

I thought Avatar did CGI well even on motion capture even to avoid "dead eye" syndrome like Polar Express

  • this video only illustrates the superiority of anime. A few of the films here are good such as the secret of nimh and the thief and the cobbler. rock and rule is uneven but has some well done parts. Siegfried would be good if it wasn't just a four minute trailer. the rest is mostly terribly done 80s garbage that is best forgotten. you might have included some disney and dreamworks films, but still the western animation cannon cannot compare to the depth and quality of anime.

  • @mittROMNEY666

I think my friend you should remove your Weeaboo glasses for a moment and consider how 'awesome' the latest animes are. Depth? You mean like hamhanded anti-war stories, galling whiny teen angst, or invincible warriors prattling on about how awesome they are? How about the nightmare girls with high voices (in Japanese) who witter on about nothing and serve as under aged fan service?

Anime owes its existence to western animation and is still playing catch up.

    Style < substance

  • @bloodrunsclear most anime is garbage, just like in the west I could point out any number of god awful shows. in the past decade however the following animes were released: Paprika, Spirited Away, Gurren Lagann, GITS 2 innocence, new Eva films, afro samurai, sword of the stranger, and vampire hunter d bloodlust . The only really good western animation in that time : triplets of belleville and lilo & stitch. sorry but it isnt even close. also check out Redline which looks totally incredible.

  • @mittROMNEY666

-It's easy to see that Koike is a huge fan of western graphic art, and has been influenced as much by French comic artist Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud (possibly best known for his design work on The Fifth Element), the US animated film Heavy Metal, cult UK sci-fi comic 2000 AD, and even the Star Wars movies.

This was in the first review I found for Redline.

    Still playing catch up...

  • @bloodrunsclear If I had to pick a much more obvious influence on koike it would be peter chung of aeon flux; moebius is stretching it, seems like the reviewer is just naming random scifi crap. The film is recognizably and undeniably anime first and foremost. Furthermore, the fluidity and brilliance of the animation transcends any influencess... quite simply its some of the best animation ever done.

  • @mittROMNEY666

    Cont...

And yes I do feel fine about saying all this.

Consider. Half this country thinks anything from Japan is awesome, content or no. And the reason western animation sucks so much nowadays is because, ironically, we're trying to copy the Japanese.

More pointless chibi, angst, overlong battles and emphasis of style over what little substance there is.

    Woot

  • @bloodrunsclear i think the problem in the west is that animation is still viewed as for kids and all the money is going to 3d. if films like Siegfried could get made, things might be different...

  • @bloodrunsclear

Do you also think both HM the movie and magazine were some of the sources for James Cameron's Avatar? i mean Cameron is a fan of both sources and he probably borrowed elements from them including Star Wars, Dances with Wolves, Ferngully, Nausicaa, Dune, Princess Mononoke, Starchaser Legend of Orin, The dark Crystal, Last of the Mohicans, Lawrence of Arabia, How the West Was Won, Lightyears (Gandahar), Fantastic Planet, Willow etc.?

  • @Johnlindsey289

Well he is a 'fan' of them like the author and filmmakers of Eragon were 'fans' of Star Wars.

He ripped all the ideas off and provided being a fan as an excuse :/

  • @bloodrunsclear

But does Avatar reminded you of those things especially SatAM, Last of the Mohicans, Dune, Nausicaa and Heavy Metal? Cameron did some HM magazine/movie homages in his new movie even with the visual design in the film even with the creatures, storyline and half-naked alien girls, Neytiri reminds me of Taarna combined with Lupe.

  • @Johnlindsey289

SATAM? That had a good story. Last of the Mohicans has actual pathos, Dune has credible science, Nausicaa had a likable lead and Heavy Metal had some original ideas XD

But I agree, there are a lot of influences easily seen.

  • @bloodrunsclear

SatAM and Avatar both deal with technology vs. nature and Robotnik/Quatrich are the same kind of evil person. Similarities to Starchaser is both were 3D Sci-fi fantasy adventures with young man becoming hero and fighting a tyrant as even the forest is similar to the jungle in Starchaser. Who would win in a contest between Neytiri and Taarna in a battle? they are kind of alike don't you think especially with the dragon.

  • @Johnlindsey289

Sorry (I'm a bit of a dedicated Avatar hater ^^;)

  • @bloodrunsclear

Jealous of Avatar's success are you? you don't think it deserves to be highest grossing movie of all time and getting critical acclaim? do you think it's on par with Cameron's Terminator 1 & 2 and Aliens? or is Avatar the biggest fraud in cinematic history? i believe it has brilliant CGI that perfected motion capture without the dead-eye syndrome like in Polar Express.

  • @Johnlindsey289

No, I'm pissed that such a blatant, artless, plodding, hateful film was made at all. If it had been a bomb I'd still hate it. It doesn't deserve public access cable release without being sued because it was made before and called Pocahantus. Or Dances with Wolves. Or Last Samurai.

Its nothing special in any front, no more or less important then the Star Wars Prequels in terms of effects and even then at least Star Wars was exciting and original sometimes...

  • @bloodrunsclear

Cameron wrote Avatar in 1993 before Last Samurai and Pocahontas, Cameron had to wait a decade until 2006 for the technology to do his idea justice after he was convinced by LOTR and King Kong's technology he filmed it rightaway. You think it's inferior to Dances with Wolves and do you think it's on par with Terminator 1 & 2 or Aliens? or is James Cameron just Michael Bay redux?

  • @Johnlindsey289

That is such nonsense. He uses the term 'shock and awe' and other Bushisms. If he had time to update that he could see how much of a pale rip off his film was. He had half a billion dollars and all he could make really was a film with no identity made just to hammer in a ham-handed environmentalist message which doesn't even make any sense?

Its inferior to Dances which was well directed and Terminator and Aliens had character and action.

    Even Bay had SOMETHING happening!

  • @bloodrunsclear

Do you also think Avatar is also a dumbed down version of Frank Herbert's Dune and Nausicaa? i mean he did borrowed from it at times.

What do you think of it being the highest grossing movie of all time? and it's Cameron's worst film right and killing cinema right?

  • @Johnlindsey289

Avatar is a dumbed down version of Last Samurai with less subtlety. Dune and Nausicaa had interesting alien creatures. All Avatar had was horses and rhinos.

It sold well because it ushered in 3D and there was nothing else to see at the time.

Cameron is good at making money. I just wish he cared about storytelling.

  • @bloodrunsclear

Do you think it's as bad as David Lynch's expensive trainwreck adaptation of Dune? i can't wait for the new Dune movie and maybe it'll erase the memories of that 1984 clunker (aka Lynch's worst film).

  • @Johnlindsey289

At least David Lych's movie was memorable in some way shape or form. I can still remember lines of dialogue and parts of the music. Avatar all I remember is being either bored or furious.

I had hoped the new Dune would be directed by Peter Berg, but apparently that's not so anymore.

Peter Jackson might be an interesting choice. Who would you hire? :)

  • @bloodrunsclear

You don't think Avatar deserves to make money right? it's a cinematic scam isn't it? Is James Cameron just another shallow mindless filmmaker who cares nothing but money and you don't think it will ever be as good as Terminator 2 right?

The Mini-series did more justice to Herbert's book than Lynch's monstrosity.

  • @Johnlindsey289

I'm glad you're another fan of the Dune miniseries! A lot of people complained but its not only the best existing Dune film its also the best thing Sci-Fi has ever made.

Cameron I hope wants to make something of himself but there's only two likelihood's to him making a film as shallow and terrible as Avatar. Either he doesn't care...or he doesn't know. The problem is with its success he'll never know how derivative and boring it is so he'll likely never improve :/

  • @bloodrunsclear

    Gore Verbinski.

Avatar is nothing but a cinematic scam only to make money right? What do you think of James Cameron himself?

  • @Johnlindsey289

    Good choice!

Avatar is nothing more then Cameron unfortunately showing his true colors. He has no idea how to write and became famous too early to know anything but effects. I'm not that fond of Cameron. Titanic was an exploitive film that did nothing new. Terminator 2 he actually came in AFTER it was nearly finished by an Italian director so his claim to 'directing' that is a lie.

You want to see his first real film? Its called Piranha 2.

  • sweet video-what song is this if I may ask? :)

  • @Darkflametailz

I mentioned it in the description and actually the last commentator mentioned it too.

Diem Ex Dei by Globus :)

  • @bloodrunsclear thanks. and sorry about that. ^^; I guess I didn't pay enough attention. ^^

  • @Darkflametailz

No problem, I'm glad you could find it :)

  • I say down with Anime and 3-D. I used to love it like all other of my favorite cartoons. But now its getting painfully repetitive with visuals and storylines with few exceptions. Its never going to be like it once was.

  • @DoubtfulGrace

It won't ever be if no one ever gets uppity about it XD

  • Fantastic! Totally Fantastic! Nice job on this video, man. oh, and to those of you who are wondering what the song is called, it's "Diem Ex Dei" by Globus.

  • That was AWSOME!

  • OK I think Ive allredy commented on this but Ive looked EVERYWHERE and I cant find this song, um if you wouldnt mind could you link me to wherever you got it. If its not two mutch trouble.

  • @aloradarkstar

Look up Globus. That should get you where you want to go :)

  • aliens really needs a cartoon series

  • The song is from Immediate Music TFOAC V.1 And you can find it on itunes in the album trailer head. The soundtrack is in Globus and that song it called "Diem Ex Dei".

  • This song is by X-Ray Dog? I was sure it was by Globus...anyway, great video!

  • You have a point. I'll fix that XD

    Thanks :)

  • ah yes traditional animation my only wish is that it had tried to adapt to it's surounding's if they tried to improve it mix the styles of anime and traditional thus making animation simular to batman tas series. But hey i enjoy animation now very fluid and less lo so i guess that's a plus.

  • This simple fact that you included Titan A.E. in this video is enough for me to love it.

  • Ah... such a feeling of nostalgia. : ) I am definitely going to find these movies - and I haven't seen many of them.

Another good show - Pirates of Dark Water, have you seen that? I reeeeally want that, but its not on DVD, : ( its so sad. (not the show though, hahah)

Also, I really love this song. Where did you get it from? I would really like a copy of it.

  • Comment removed

  • Where did you get this song? It's beautiful and I can't find it anywhere.

  • I'll send you a link! Thanks for watching :)

  • Very nice!

  • I agree the story had lot of potential, but the severe snarkiness of the characters put me off XD

Titan A.E is sadly one of the only recent examples I could find of classic animation. Most of the rest are older or independent.

I was trying to stay away from Disney. Not that it doesn't make fantastic animation, but I was hoping to showcase the forgotten classics.

  • It saddens me that most of the people in the industry nowadays dont know a thing about making cartoons. Its like each person who makes something isnt a cartoonist...{Like 6teen and Heck tdi...these are like shows made by people who dont know about animation}

May I mention family guy creator seth? Heck... I should also mention that Adult animation is lacking quite alot in the cinemas in the US.

  • I agree and Japan makes great adult animation you know even hentai.

  • Hentai is like porno anime, isn't it?

    Why is this quality animation?

Likewise in my opinion Japanese works have gotten more technically beautiful but the stories are kind of falling off. Paprika is a good example. Gorgeous visuals but not much sense or pathos :/

  • @OriginalGagBonkers

I know and if you like adult animation, you should check out Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Princess Mononoke, Beowulf, Heavy Metal, Fantastic Planet, Lightyears (aka Gandahar), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind etc.

  • @Johnlindsey289

Don't forget my favorite anime film that no one seem to remember Escaflowne XD

  • Was that Titan A.E movie any good? I never saw it

  • @ytmndman The animation was top notch, but the story was a little weak. Joss Whedon was the wrong choice for writer :/

  • The clips from The Thief and the Cobbler did not include any animation made by Williams*... how ironic. Well, I guess the ones you used were more athmospheric. Nice video, anyway. :-)

*except for the clouds inside the crystal ball, but that is hardly anything.

  • I appreciate the sentiment in giving homage to "non-anime" animation and it's a nice selection, but the info for it the vid doesn't come too short of trolling.

What is happening now with traditional animation is just a reversal of previous trends. In the past it wasn't considered animation if it wasn't Disney. Now, non-western countries are producing animation on a larger scale, for other demographics. It's like comparing newspaper comics to web comics. They're not bad, they just didn't change.

  • Nothing short of trolling?

Why is it that unless negative opinions fit into popular mores they're considered trolling statements?

Anime is not inherently superior and there's a lot of things it cannot do as well as Western animation. I know, blasphemy.

    And anime has gotten worse.

If you're a proponent of change you shouldn't consider negative feedback trolling. Its precisely because anime receives no critique that its expanded without trim and degraded in quality.

  • There's a large difference between "coming short of trolling" and "nothing but trolling".

My point is that while yes, western animation is as deserving of merit and accolade as anime, there is no component in either style that makes it "better". Rather than pointing out those merits in response to finding a few crazed anime fans saying anime possessed some unobtainable quality, you simply stood on a soap box and said "uh-uh!" and proceeded to do the same for western animation.

  • Nothing? I'd beg to differ. Unless you're saying nothing can possibly be better then anime then you're...I don't know...the opposite of trolling.

What was I supposed to say? Both are of completely equal merit? If that's the case then Western animation is superfluous.

And your solution to trolling against an artform being superior in every way is...personal attacks on the people that follow the artform?

Actually I was trying to avoid that.

  • What about AKira, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in The Shell, Hayao Miyazaki's stuff, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Golgo 13, Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2 and more? great anime.

I see you also like Heavy Metal but do you think it predates hentai including Urotsukidoji in the US? do you know what hentai is?

  • Akira I thought was kind of muddle, GOTF was depressing and somewhat pointless, GOTS was great until it got hammy, HM's works are beautiful if fluffy, WC I haven't seen, NS was a guilty pleasure, G13 I haven't seen, VHD was stylish but hollow.

Yes, porn anime I think XD

HM i liked for its breaking of conventions and gritty, realistic style, not particularly for the sex and violence.

  • Yes Hentai is porn anime. Ever seen the infamous Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend? graphic stuff with scenes of tentacles, rape, gore, mutilation, sex, and every excess around like Caligula. GOTS? you mean Ghost in The Shell.

Seen Wicked City and what do you think of Hayao Miyazaki's stuff like Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and more? he's a genius and Japan's answer to Disney.

  • Good glory, yuck O_o

I watch the Crank movies and queasy XD

Ghost in the Shell (darn you dyslexia) I meant yes. It was a superb crime drama/science fiction movie for me until it started getting melodramatic at the end.

Miyazaki's work I consider exceptionally beautiful, but I'm a little bit of a story snob so I get a bit antsy with nothing but visuals. There are usually great characters, but they don't always have much to do (Spirited Away being a good example)

  • Wicked City is another good one of sex and violence done right like HM, made from the creator of Ninja Scroll. It's less sexually graphic and tasteless then Urotsukidoji or some hentai but more on the story. Do you think hentai gives anime a bad name?

At least Bakshi doesn't go overboard with Fritz The Cat or Heavy Traffic like Japanese animated porn. What do you think of Metropolis 2001 anime version or Cowboy Bebop the movie?

  • Um...hentai I consider a separate entity. Its like saying do racy movies give other movies a bad name? Depends on how good they are at what they were made to do I guess XD

Wow, Bakshi might not have gone completely out to lunch but those movies sure pushed the boundaries O_o

I liked Cowboy Bebop the movie. Metropolis...meh. It was wonderful stylistically but maybe it comes down to taste.

My favorite anime movie is still Escaflowne. I'm not sure why...

  • i mean the other side also has a point western animation has lost its balls..its too politically correct and lovey dovey

anime and anime like shows dominates and i think..will be the future of animation simply because they picked up where disney and co left off..

  • But Anime is stagnating too.

If you watch the movie Spirits of the Past you'll see every cliche imaginable. Anime is starting to repeat itself and needs its own renaissance. Too many people accept it as 'the next thing' and don't learn any lessons from the past.

  • well thats because the same thing that happened in the west happened in the east..all the OG's died or retired

and the newer writers seem to just go with what was done..it'll reinvent itself faster then western animation because the Japanesse don;t have idiot media watch dog groups holding them back the way the west does (i seriously blaim parents for watering down american cartoons)

  • who was that old guy at 24? looks bad ass

  • That's from the unreleased animated feature Sigfried. Unfortunately the French creator couldn't get the funding :/

  • This video inspires me. One day I hope to bring back animation like this, and maybe improve for everyone to enjoy.

  • and alot of animes have blood and sexual refrences just to let you know.Anime is popular for the same reason that animation was popular then cause it is hip and people like it so there was somthing wrong with the old animation if it went out.

  • That's not the only thing that made western animation unique! The older styles had focus on characters, detail, exploration of concepts without being alienating and confusing as most modern animes are. Also older style western animation was not ever very popular, just made by those who had a passion for storytelling.

Newer anime is so darn popular its become a massive industry, and is starting to repeat itself and get lazy in my opinion.

  • To you they are confusing but it has more fans than the old animation did.And this animation got lazy to and alot of animes pay attetion to detail's but back to this animation it got lazy as well it payed alot of attetion to detail bu do i realy care?.

  • They're probably confusing to the fans too, but since its popular they go along with it. It has more fans because its not American, and everything not American has to be cool, right?

Animes have a lot of attention to detail that don't say anything about character or story. It just looks nice.

This type of animation got lazy yes, and thats why I made this video honoring the examples of this animation that weren't lazy, and that we should learn from.

  • Now your saying that because it is not from america it is better honestly your saying that is the only reason people like it more you just sound like an angry fanboy now. These are lazy not all of them but some of them thundercats he man god.

  • I'm just saying a lot of people like anime simply because its exotic.

You sound a bit fanboyish yourself, defending anime from the one video on youtube that says its inferior to previous animation styles in SOME ways.

Thundercats as I said was drawn by Japanese artists, but scripted and directed by others. It's not strictly anime. No big eyes. No speed lines. No overblown powers. No sex jokes. No random philosophical tirades. No lengthy flashbacks...

  • I am not a big fan of anime but do find it better both had problems this one obviously had more for it to end.I am defending anime cause of all the hater comment's.And like avatar the last airbender it had japanese animation but was made by others.I never talked about thundercats all i said was it got lazy it's animation sucked.

  • Have you ever seen Secret of the NIMH?

    Fire and Ice?

    Starchaser?

    Light Years?

The original Batman animated series and films?

All of those had things anime has never had and still have not copied. There's a depth, a mature feeling, storytelling, and characterization that doesn't need gratuitous sex and violence to claim its mature.

Even Avatar is kids stuff compared to older animation. I like Avatar too, but it still plays it safe.

    Hater comments?

  • Avatar plays it safe cause it is on nickolodeon and another thing is the fact critics paraise it for a dark story.I saw all that stuff i enjoyed them but the fact is your a fanboy who is mad that his animation got replaced you can't adapt can you. There is depth in and mature feeling's without sex and violence stop stereotyping it..Your complaining when pretty much no one else is just face it anime has clamied the world whY? cause it is consider better by many cause of the stories and animation.

  • Why am I a fanboy for saying the past was better?

    I'm a critic.

So what if anime has conquered. Does something being popular make it better? Remember Disaster Movie and Epic Movie topping the charts? Does that make those movies better then, say, Serenity? No, it makes them more popular.

    I'm not complaining, I'm comparing.

Many like anime because its popular, because its hip. Imagine if anime became unhip, compared to something else. Would a lot of people keep watching it?

    Perhaps not.

  • You say it is hip but i found out it was around when ww2 started i rest my case it has been around longer it has evolved it has done somthing no other animation can do.

  • It hasn't though. Actually anime owes its very existence to western animation. The reason anime looks the way it does is an homage to Disney. Anime is Japanese Disney copying first and foremost, the oldest animes like Astro Boy and Simba the Lion very definitely resembling early Disney artwork.

Now whose the fanboy? The one who argues western animation was better then anime IN SOME WAYS or the one who argues anime beats western animation in all ways?

  • Not really dude astro boy loks like which disney creation? tell me.I have not said it is better than it i am saying people consider it better cause it has lasted longer. And anime has been around since ww2.

  • oh i just found out somthing else it started with 5 movies that were made in 1917 so there ya go.

  • Earliest American animation: 1906

  • And dude still it is along time the fact that type of animation has ben around so long and is popular show's that it is good. Also we are talking about the animation you showed in this vid and anime.

  • Ahh, the beauty of TRUE animation :)

  • true animation there is no true animation cause of the different opinion's.

  • As an animation student, I sincerely appreciate watching this video, as it reminds me of the good old days when animation crossed all borders with provocative, majestic themes and were not subjected to just children. With that being said, I think the state of traditional animation can be rooted to not only to the "politically correct" mantra making current animated features "safe", but also to the effect that there are only a few art schools in the states that emphasizes 2D principles.

  • Your saying animation is just for kids but plenty of animation is marketed to adult's from japan.

  • This video makes me so happy. I get so sick of people fawning over anime and totally forgetting some of the great western animated shows and movies. I actually believe that one of the huge problems with animation today is that so many people are trying to imitate the anime style. I also totally agree that it's criminal the way animation has been relegated to a children's medium.

    I miss the 90s. :(

  • Criminal go to the kids cause well adults need to act like adults.

  • I greatly respect your appreciation for the dying ideals and forms of animation. A great and well presented tribute and video.

  • Thank you :)

It doesn't have to die. Nothing does if there are those who remember it.

  • That's correct. Here's a valid statement:

"What more could I say? I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way."

  • Sometimes we have to remember where we came from, not just as a means of nostalgia, but a way to forge ahead.

Hollywood and entertainment in general to me seem too fixated on the past for all the wrong reasons; remakes.

Wouldn't it be great to see something in the spirit of the older films, not just modern retreads?

  • I'm curious, did the Iron Giant not make it on because you didn't remember it, or because it didn't make some kind of cut?

  • It's technically CG in my opinion, I was going for traditional, hand drawn, not anime.

Also Iron Giant lives into a kind of Disney aesthetic. I was looking to the grittier, more dramatic caste of animated film.

Giant had its dramatic moments, but for me it was part of the reasons animation is relegated to children's films.

  • I like the old Anime stuff like the Guyver and Fist of the North Star...Especially Fist of the North Star, that's a favorite of my brother's and mine!

  • I think that all forms of animation are profond, moving, and beautiful in their own ways. The trick is to make the artwork flow with the storyline. Do that, and you've got true magic; no matter where it's from.

  • I agree with you :)

But everyone has something to lend to the art-form as you mentioned, regardless of location. However stereotypes like 'western animation is dead/pointless/can't be dramatic' has really left a lot out of the animation pool in my opinion.

  • Oh yeah!!! 0:33 2:25 and 3:09 Heavy Metal is my FAVORITE animated movie EVER!!!!!!!!!!! GO CANADIAN ANIMATION!!!!!!!

  • I agree :D

Although, you've got to admit New Zealand animation is awesome too...and French...and American (on occasion XD)

  • oh yea.

have you seen that movie Fantastic Planet (French from like the 70s). My art teacher showed that and I was like "wow. animation is definatly interesting."

  • I loved The Secret of NIMH clips in there, I found that to be one of my most favourite animations of all time.

  • Thanks to this vid I was introduced to several old school animated films I had not seen before, including Rock & Rule and Starchaser. They both rocked. :D Thank you.

  • I don't really agree with those people who claim that Western animation is inferior, as Western animation has much more history and has amazing styles.

Then again, I also don't agree with people that claim that anime is all cutesy and lacking in depth. There are plenty of animes that have the "gritty atmosphere", it's just that American audiences focus on others.

  • I've seen plenty of gritty animes (Akira comes to mind) but at least in my experience animes often drown the characters in the massive events, leaving little to care about. Other animation styles are more effective at conveying characters as central to the story. It's probably just my sentiments as a Western person.

Many animes nowadays seem a tad shackled to the conventions of the style, suffering the same dumbing down as Western animation has.

  • You are right that anime has undergone a degradatative process, and now the depth and complexity characteristic of earlier works is exceedingly rare to find, but nonetheless there exist a few animes that focus heavily on the psychology and mentality of their characters, such as Ergo Proxy, Monster, and Welcome to the NHK.

Of course, these gems are often drowned out by the multitude of shallow action and comedy animes popular in the West.

  • My favorite films and shows are usually combinations of western and eastern influences. I like Avatar the Last Airbender and the original Macross series (which unashamedly made references to Star Trek).

  • its all to do with whiny perents who can not keep an eye on there kid whining about frendlyer programing still i would love something like kotor animation with WESTERN ANIMATON oooooo what a forbiden art it seems to be

  • YAY! You got highlander in here awesome! I agree with you. The issue about anime I see these days is that they look too colorfully "cartoony." I mean if you take a look at Macross Frontier or Gundam 00 they don't have that feeling of real-ness like the Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal cartoon, man it's so fluid and it makes you feel pulled into that world. I wish we have animation (no matter Western or Japanese) up to that standard of quality.

  • This was wonderful! I do miss this western style of animation sometimes.

I loved the inclusion of the Land Before Time, but you left out the Hobbit and the animated LotR. (Also, Siegfried has gorgeous animation.)

  • I couldn't get a lot of the classic in very good quality! If so I would have posted Pirates of Dark Water, the Lucasfilm series like Droids and Ewoks, The Hobbit, LOTR, Heavy Metal 2000...

I'm glad you liked it though. I keep hoping for some kind of revival!

  • holy cow what's the movie at 1:08?

  • That's from a trailer for a French animated feature called Siegfried (based on the Ring Saga). Unfortunately it was never released. It looked beautiful!

If you look up the trailer on line you'll see what I mean ;)

  • Great video! =D

I love anime, but I also like other other styles of animation as well.. its nice to see something different. ^_^

  • there is difference. Alot of Animation today is done to be quick for marketing and such. Hence they use Limited Animation, The Computer makes Limited animation much faster to produce-days or weeks instead of months.

The animation in the clip is mostly whats called Full Animation. This form is usually used for full length movies and such for theaters.

  • But even comparatively, Full Animation nowadays is of less detail, less grit, less overall depth then earlier work when it was not committees that put it together but individual artists :/

  • Excellent job! Especially on Batman animated. That series was the SHIT! Shame no kids shows are willing to tackle themes like that again.

  • ^^ i too salute you. Great tribute to an increasingly underappreciated style.

Not that I don't like anime, but I've always enjoyed the different styles and approaches.

  • I love these movies, good memories. Thanks for again being different.

  • Nice video! It's really great to remember people there are also other cartoons besides anime. I grew up with both. But btw: You have Thundercats in the video and Thundercats is - in fact - an anime! ^^

  • I'm aware that the animators were Japanese, but to me the style is far different to the popular form of anime, and creator and writers were no Japanese, and the style was not tooled specifically to the stringent rules of anime. Anime nowadays bears little resemblance even to classic Japanese animation. I guess this video is a tribute to classic animation of all kinds.

  • Ah, ok.

  • ok, whoever said that anime is far more superior than any other form of animation must be the same kind of person that says words like, "kawaii" or "gomen nasai." in regular conversation. I.e. they are morons.

also fun fact: most if not all anime was inspired by western animators like Walt Disney, chew on that logic fantards!

  • Anime is mostly Limited with Excellent Rendering, today I seen a couple Full Anime. Anime was inpired by the early animation too. around 1920s

  • 1:08

    What is this movie?

And did you put "Heavy Metal" in there? That's not for kids! XD

Have you seen Wizards? (AKA War Wizards.) That's one of the best ones there is, but I didn't see it in there.

  • I'm actually not as much a fan of Wizards. I like Ralph Bakshi's other movie Fire and Ice better, but that's just me.

Heavy Metal is definitely not for kids and was meant to show that traditional animation wasn't always so confined to a child market.

  • It seems Anima has taken over the animation buissness sadly.

  • "The inspiration for this video was a comment I came across in my travels declaring Anime the best and uncontested style for animation, the western style and all others inferior and barely worth bothering about comparatively."

Dood. The person who said that was shallow...most likely an anime fangirl who squees over anorexic boys with overdrawn hair and eyelashes and whatnot. Nothing THOSE types of people say can or should be taken seriously...

  • Fucking character restrictions.

Anyway, "As stylized as Japaneese animation is, to me it lacks the heft of earlier work, the gritty atmosphere, the realism, the detail."

Go check out Miyazaki if you want some realism and extreme attention to detail.

Also, earlier western styles were drawn by hand, so attention to detail was REQUIRED frame-to-frame. The products were just stunning, too. Nowadays, most cartoons we see are either computer created or assembled (not CGI), or simply drawn...

  • Miyazaki is close, but the incurable traditionalist in me still prefers the grit of Don Bluth's previous works in many ways (not that Miyazaki isn't an exceptional and entertaining artist!)

I wish there was still integrity and individual accomplishment encouraged in traditional animation. Nowadays it seems that western animation is all kid stuff, since 'obviously' it will never be anything more then cartoons. CGI I think contributed to this attitude.

  • "Dear god...realism presented to MY child? Hell no! Let me have Flash animation!"

  • Ouch 0_0

Anime is a perfectly respectable animation institution, but I do think it takes itself as the only mature artform in existence. It's just a matter of taking other forms into consideration.

  • Yes, I hate todays' parents. "Violence?! IDEAS?! Oh NOES!!"

    Anime doesn't "take itself" as the only mature artform in existence. It's the people who watch it, especially the idiots here in the west, who idolize it that way. In Japan, anime is nothing more than a form of entertainment, like western animation was/is in the west. It's their immaturity that narrows their minds to, "Anime is everything, nothing else can compare". Unfortunately, that's a wide range of people. D;

  • I remember when cartoons were good.

Nowadays, there all kid-friendly and junk.

I think thats why so many people watch anime nowadays.

And there's never animated movies in theatres anymore, just CGI ones.

  • Precisely my thoughts as well. I do not believe that anime or western animation are superior or inferior to each other.

  • Great video, great memories. Will you do a tribute to Disney?

  • besides anime i dont think that other types have a name. anyways i noticed that they heavily rely on epic fantasy or fantasy/sci-fi settings

  • Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!

Thank you so much Bloodrunsclear for making this wonderful tribute. There's alot of memories in this vid. The "Anime Generation" are really missing out. ;)

  • I salute you sir =)

  • First+ good vid, once again :)
