I heard it only used for a total of 13 days, with only 48 shells being fired. It took 25 trainloads of equipment, 2,000 men, and six weeks to assemble the monstrous gun at the firing location.
@Alaska1925 the gun had alot of power but it had a secret it shot the shell so high it would go to the earth's atmosphere and since there was no air resistance there the shell would travel longer distances
I know. they definitely are intimidating. but you do the same amount of damage with an airstrike or tactical missile. they were very easy to hit from the air, and are limited to the track they are on. they could work defensively but there are still better weapons than a railway gun.
@sickleandsuckle But their were benefits also. You could mobilize and get a battery across the country in a few hours. Thats a massive tactical advantage.
@TheBlackhawk123 Thanks you , Can you tell me this gun shoot 255kg Shells Over a distance of 70km And how much shells it can fire ? And the Germans Still have this gun? And the German use this Gun Against Which Country?
@24tam2010 Im not sure how many shells it can fire per time unit, but since they had to have the barrel horizontal to load the gun, it was not very fast firing. There are some of this guns left in museum and such. These guns were already outphased when WW2 started. The Germans used the gun against every country. They even bomben the allies in italy with it. The guns were very usefull, but they didnt have the inpact they were suposed to have.
Crazy that M982 Excalibur rounds fired from M777 artillery have close to the same range as these railroad guns. The M777 is like 20x smaller than a railroad gun though.....
@TheBBoyJmE Like TonyLozada27 said, it's simple physics. Here's a basic rundown for you:
Gravitational acceleration was already figured out to be around 9.81 m/s. Taking the angle of reach and velocity of the launched projectile while factoring in air resistance, time of flight and distance traveled could be accurately measured. Radios and map-reading (because a GPS wasn't invented yet) made precise artillery strikes possible.
You must be, because I told you I understand the physics behind it, I also know the procedure. that's STILL not the intention of my initial question, How accurate and effective is this gun. 1mm deviation at the gun when wanting to shoot at the effective range of 39km, with the air temperature, wind direction and humidity across the 39km can play a very vital role of the projectiles final trajectory. so this gun will most likely miss desired targets by kms.
@TheBBoyJmE Well, aren't we snippy? I don't see how this differs too much from the howitzers we still use today. Wind, humidity, and air temperature were also considered because these guys are smarter than you would like to believe. Artillery is used to shell the target area to cause terror and destruction. When you're lobbing several shells the weight of two pickup trucks, this gun did it, and so did its modern-day equivalents. Besides, this old thing is obsolete, so what's the point in asking?
@Samuraipaladin "Bullet," "7 Tons," Oh dear Lord, what in the hell is wrong with people! 7 tons is 14,000 Lbs. Do you realize how impossibly heavy that is? There is no way in hell that bullet would have traveled ANYWHERE. And the fact you called it a, "Bullet," is just insulting.
@oddieboi How should i call it then? Heavy artillery round? Ok.... :-)
And its not impossible to shot a 14,000Lbs round with such a gun.
Just go to Wikipedia and enter "Schwerer Gustav" in the search. There all the details about the gun will be explained. And yes....there is a photo of a 7 ton "bullet". Its twice as high as a russian T-34 tank! Enjoy!

@TheOneToxic they had to open their mouths to equalize the air pressure and prevent a punctured ear drum upon firing.. If you notice, they all are opening their mouths to some degree.
@TheOneToxic As was said, there was a very real need to do that so that the differential pressure wouldn't blow out their ears. Might look goofy but at least he kept his hearing.

One question to you artillery experts, unlike light mortars that shot bearing can be adjusted by seeing where the previous one landed, how do you know where artillery fire falls and how do you correct its direction if needed be?
@R5H4D0W Depending on where these guns were positioned you could have to scenarios, direct fire and indirect fire. Direct fire is when you can visually see the target, indirect means you have a system of coordination, i.e. a spotter, relay team. Most of the time these guns were indirect fire, and all the knobs ect. all fall on to a coordinated grid that is laid over a map. And all the components of the gun team and relay team have a special math chart that can be used to make adjustments.

The sound hurts?? This ppl can not do much about it that this country wanted productions the best of the best. Better than the whole world. I am not kidding. Even right now in 2011 the should use very old German trains as American Winter trains..What is so nazi? New york ppl probably scared to hear the word nazi train and rather have critical railroad and planes in towers?

The Nazis were a political party, you really needed to join if you wanted any chance of having a successful military career.
That of course doesn't apply to the conscripts, of which was the majority of the German Army.
Some soldiers were actually transferred to the SS to help fill the losses in combat.

I seem to remember hearing it could only fire a few times before overheating. I also think I heard the barrel warped due to heat.

They should sent this One to New York right now to free the frozen Train roads and get rid of snow!
