I know. they definitely are intimidating. but you do the same amount of damage with an airstrike or tactical missile. they were very easy to hit from the air, and are limited to the track they are on. they could work defensively but there are still better weapons than a railway gun.

@24tam2010 Im not sure how many shells it can fire per time unit, but since they had to have the barrel horizontal to load the gun, it was not very fast firing. There are some of this guns left in museum and such. These guns were already outphased when WW2 started. The Germans used the gun against every country. They even bomben the allies in italy with it. The guns were very usefull, but they didnt have the inpact they were suposed to have.

Gravitational acceleration was already figured out to be around 9.81 m/s. Taking the angle of reach and velocity of the launched projectile while factoring in air resistance, time of flight and distance traveled could be accurately measured. Radios and map-reading (because a GPS wasn't invented yet) made precise artillery strikes possible.

Wind, humidity, and air temperature were also considered because these guys are smarter than you would like to believe. Artillery is used to shell the target area to cause terror and destruction. When you're lobbing several shells the weight of two pickup trucks, this gun did it, and so did its modern-day equivalents. Besides, this old thing is obsolete, so what's the point in asking?

@R5H4D0W Depending on where these guns were positioned you could have to scenarios, direct fire and indirect fire. Direct fire is when you can visually see the target, indirect means you have a system of coordination, i.e. a spotter, relay team. Most of the time these guns were indirect fire, and all the knobs ect. all fall on to a coordinated grid that is laid over a map. And all the components of the gun team and relay team have a special math chart that can be used to make adjustments.
