BBE sonic Maximizers suck tone, they are rubbish. These amps are great, especially for metal. Just put in some decent tubes, and throw a Bloody Murder pedal in front to tighten it up and it is a beast.
Yeah, I had that with mine and it was because of the tubes.. I hadn't replaced them from the day I bought it (back in 92). 15 years out of one set of tubes, gotta love that amp.
It may be tube related, although the first thing you should try is cleaning the FX loop jacks. Spray some contact cleaner in there and repeatedly plug/unplug a patch cable to clean the jack of any dirt/corrossion. Super common issue with this FX loop design, and it can cause a whole bunch of funky things to happen.
New tubes isn't a bad thing, but if the return jack is messed up the problem will continue.
i found a good deal on one of these and it sounds great...but my biggest concern is to see if its reliable. have u gigged with this amp or had any problams?
i use a 5150 and our other Guitarplayer a Engl Richie Blackmore Amp...i like the Peavey more, have a dirty Sound is not so clean like a Engl but everybody have a different Taste in Tone, you can´t say Peavey or Engla are better...I have the 5150 15Years and i will use always
i have played the Engl Thunder, Screamer and Fireball. Planning to buy a Ritchie Blackmore sig. If i were you i would buy the powerball. I have never tried a peavey 5150 or 6505 series but i did try the Valveking and bandit and got very dissappointed. I know its a very different pricerange. Just test em both and pick the one you like
the engl powerball sounds more brutal then the peavey 5150II. so i guess, you'd be better off with an engl powerball. because i think, the peavey 5150II is more for this modern sound.
Between 2 and 3 is where other people in the house are going to start complaining. At 3 your nearest neighbors will hear it a little bit. And at 10, I just measured mine at 126 dB, (3 feet from SPL meter). (Using two cabs: 4x Celestion G12H and 4x Celestion G12M greenbacks).

What's better for Thrash/Heavy metal? Peavey 5150II or Engl Powerball head?
HeavyThrashGuitar 2 years ago
I don't know. Never heard an Engl in person. Just depends on the kind of tone your aiming for. Heard that the Engl is suppose to be a very good amp.

stay away from the 5150II .

ENGL powerballs definitely have an awesome sound
Especially the ENGL invader.
I personally would go with them but they tend to be on the expensive side..

Neither, a jcm800
M1K3999 2 years ago
5150. If you go engl, check out the Savage or the SE. The powerball is muddy and overpriced.

excellent sounding amp
just recently purchased this head and am waiting for it too arrive =]
now i've heard about a *knob* i guess you could call it
It acts as a master volume knob for the 5150/valveking/6505 series
anybody else heard of it??
It would be nice to get the tubes nice and hot without blowin out your ears..
bruisedorange6 2 years ago
On what volume does the 5150 start to get really loud. Is it loud at 1?
braidin123 2 years ago
it gets really loud when you pass volume 2. At full blown gigs, I play at volume 3. It would be silly to use this amp past volume 4.
Willferox 2 years ago
Depends on what you set your pre-gain at.

Id say 3!

The first part reminds me of Hellion by Judas Priest. Seems like you were listening to that when you wrote the part, sick song though.

Actually I have never heard that song. I will check it out though. Not big into Priest even though the stuff I have heard from them are good.
