Trade was a huge motivator. Union Pacific's first President was William B. Ogden, who believed like Lincoln, that trade could advance markedly with the Transcontinental Railroad. Butler's experience with the first Railroad in Chicago, proved this point. As Chicago's first Mayor, Butler knew what helped the City become a major distribution point for goods, transportation. His Galena and Chicago Union Railway proved the naysayers wrong and created a whole new trade from the interior.
