Fernando is so well-written. Alliteration comes easy. All those Fs!: "fight for freedom, feel, friend, fire, Fernando." Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds, and ABBA lyrics abound with it. Look at the Ws in Waterloo: "Waterloo, won the war, wanted to, win when I lose." This gives concreteness to a song. ABBA rhymes entire phrases. Miraculously, the recurring sounds never interfere.
@autumnnights65 is it weird for a 20 yr old to like this song? I've heard this song a long time ago, I was probably 6 yrs old back then when I was in kinder... whenever I hear the songs dancing queen, fernando, chiquitita, the winner takes it all and some other abba songs, it always reminds me of those days, my dad always taking me to kinder while playing those songs in the car.. the old days where dvd's probably still did'nt exist yet and tapes were used.. I'm such a sucker for nostalgia

personally, I thought I was the only one who felt more attracted to Frida... She was so ethereal and mesmerizing and lovely and... do I have to continue? Anyway, don't get me wrong: Agnetha had it too!
In this particular video she looks so tender and pretty... makes you want to hug her.
Too bad I was born in 1973 and will never to be able to see them performing live like in those days.
Thanks youtube for giving a "face" to the songs I heard before when I was a child.
not again!!! a song with Frida in the lead vocals and the stupid, stupid director of this video makes the camera focus on Agnetha. I do not know what is wrong with you people. FRIDA is gorgeous. Can't you see this?(I am so sorry but I am so fed up with the people telling me that Frida was not even close to what Agnetha was to ABBA and she was nothing more than a mediocre singer compared to Agnetha. This song proves you wrong.)

my family name is fernando as am from a former portuguese colony - Sri Lanka of all places and i used to be so proud that ABBA knew my name... he he ... This was recorded on my 6 th birthday Oct 18. What a lot has happened since then and where are we now? Its great to see the all-Swede culture somehow and the faces of Swedish kids in I have a Dream - this guy John gives out the greatest details and is wonderful.. thank you John for tell us about the music !!
Hi, John. I just have to say that I very much appreciate how you always provide detailed background info for the clips you post. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
Thanks for your appreciation of my efforts! I feel it makes the videos more complete to set the scene for the performance and give the background info for the song.
Has anyone noticed that it's a slightly different mix of the song that is played as backing track. I'm surprised that no-one has yet commented on that...
I agree with hamslice151, this clip really shows off Frida's exotic beauty. She was an absolute stunner, but sadly her beauty has been much under rated, perhaps due more to bad 70s styling than anything else, they didn't have the luxury back then. She reminds me a bit of Priscilla Presley.
Hi Angie, yes this sunset background and the wild west style outfits for the guys are just perfect for this classic nostalgic song. It was not enough for Abba just to sing their songs on stage, the visual presentation of each song was just as important to them. They changed costumes for each of the six songs in this Top Club filming session in Paris!
Hi there, this is one of Abba's best known classic songs, it sounds just as fresh today! The sunset background creates the perfect setting for the song, it's just like we're at the Rio Grande! French tv performances are rare indeed. The French tv companies were not particularly efficient, as Abba found out themselves the next day! I like to put plenty of background info in my vids to set the scene for the viewer. The vid then feels complete. It's John from England.
You're right, it was B&B's songwriting skills that made Abba outstanding. They won't be writing anymore for Abba, so it's over with for the group now.
What an incredible song. Benny/Bjorn were masters, but it was Agnetha & Frida who gave life to ABBA's songs. Is there any chance of them collaborating on some new music ... without Benny & Bjorn? They both still have those incredible pipes. They'd be great together even now. I don't really need an ABBA reunion at this point, but I'd relish an Agnetha/Frida reunion and any new music that might result. [How about JUST LIKE THAT as a comeback song?] How can we get that to happen? Any ideas?
Hi Virgil, I can't see any chance of Agnetha & Frida making new songs without B&B, they would have done it by now. The split between all is too deep and long to be undone. No doubt they would still sound great together, and would show today's poor singers how its done properly. B&B own the rights to Just Like That. I suspect they have deliberately not released it to keep Abba dormant while they do other projects. So I think we're banging on a closed door Virgil. Some bad feeling still remains.
There's plenty of sadness in the lyrics too Max. Its almost like one of those epic John Wayne westerns, where the heroic Fernando triumphs ar the end! The music is powerful also. The pan pipes opening is unique and memorable, giving a dramatic lead in for Frida to build on to the perfect harmonics of their combined voices for the chorus. Wonderful stuff, its a masterpice really!
Always loved this song John. Thanks again for all the nice info you include. I knew a lot of it, but you always go a bit more in-depth and I love reading your posts... As well as watching the videos!!
Thanks Dallas. I like to be thorough and include everything relevant to the vid and song, without overdoing it. It makes everything more complete for the viewer to set the scene, and give the facts and lyrics. I couldn't do just a bare performance. I come from the old school like you, we were taught to do things properly then. It's a pleasure to research classic songs like this one!
They sang this one frequently Shay, but always with enthusiam and a fresh setting. Yes the tv team have done a good job here, there's plenty of shadowy overlays of the girls to create the historical effect. A pity the tv techs spoilt the next day!
This song came out over 2 years before this performance Emma, so they would have done it plenty of times before. Thus they can concentrate on making the visual side look good, which they do here. You take care also Emma, hope to do some more classics soon.
Hi Laura, I'm so glad you're back! I sent Fernando out to find you! This is one of Abba's huge worldwide hits. The performance aims to recreate the setting for the story, with that glowing sunset and country outfits.
Cheers Laney. Songs like this are all time classics that stand the test of time. There is nothing at all like this today. Great that Emma has inherited your family's love of Abba! Some more classics this week hopefully.
I enjoyed this write up Bill, the hit figures for this song are amazing. Yes Agnetha does look good here Bill, but Frida's figure is hidden by that unusual shawl. This is a nice heartwarming performance of this classic. Always good to hear from you too Bill, some more classics coming this week hopefully.
Abba did quite a lot of flying visits to European cities during the 70's Di, usually to promote a new album or single. Yes its nice that they vary the performance each time. Everyone knows Fernando, its one of the best songs ever!
Thanks Agnetha, you help make my efforts worthwhile. This is a less well known performance from French tv. I like Aggy's simpler outfit here. Yes this is one of those songs where they can really let themselves go in the chorus!
Evening Elin. Yes, this is one of their lesser known performances. What a good idea that was, to record all the songs in one evening and then show one per day over the next week. French tv viewers had a treat!
You're right there Xem, everyone knows this song. Its been a classic for 30 years now, and is still played often. This is a typical nice performance by Abba. You can't help but love 'em, especially the two girls!
Good stuff Rustie, that saves me having to send them. I've never heard of Aiden, and probably don't want to. Amo is getting worse, do we call on the last resort for her? You get 1 guess as to what song that is.
Here's a bit of trivia for all you Abba maniacs out there.(I don't even know, It would be neat to know the answer!)....How many Abba video's were there that Benny wasn't behind the piano? Anyone care to answer?
I would guess at 10% of the Abba videos Jim, but how many different Abba performance videos are there? Maybe about 150, so I'd go for 15. I'm not going through them all to check!
A peaceful performance here, I never saw these unique costumes in any of the other Fernando performances. Not many French stuff are in colour. I also like Thank You For The Music from this show. Agnetha looks adorable there. Thanks again for sharing!
Jun
PS. Does anybody have SOS from this show? I've never seen it before. Would really appreciate it if someone shared that with us!
Hi Jun, yes you're right they're performing within themselves to a simple setup here. It looks like an attempt to recreate the promo vid evening setting. They go for a casual look for this outdoor song, but Frida wears that strange shawl. I guess they had enough money not to need to repeat outfits always. The French seem to have trouble with their tv technicians, as Abba discovered next day! You're right again, SOS is unavaliable from this show, as far as I know.
