Maynard was one of the best entertainers ever. The magic he brought to the audience (not to mention the band members) was amazing. A natural high for sure! I am so grateful to my father for turning me on to his music. He heard Maynard in 1952/53 with Kenton and he remembers the hair standing up on the back of his neck. That impression never left him and he made it a point to take us to hear Maynard in the mid to late 70's.
When a person finds their gift and is fully delivering it, at play in the fields of it...they are like angels...bringing a gift to us from another place..Love to all
sort of amazing when someone finds what they were virtually custom-built to do for a living.
physically, MF is like lance armstrong is to biking (armstrong's heart is actually quite a bit larger than a normal person's)...MF on the other hand had lungs (and chops) for days.
People can play the occasional MF chart or two, but there isn't a single person on the planet right now that could blow through an entire mulitple-hours concert right now the way he did in his prime.
was blessed to have seen Maynard a few times, twice at Toronto's outdoor venture, ONTARIO PLACE .. like others, the first time I saw Pagliacci, and the band went out into the audience, it was gooseflesh producing.. Bobby Militello's multi-chord flute playing was beyond amazing.. high energy incredible MF music, to say the least .. thank you so much for sharing this with us - fantastic MF screech trumpet memories!
Ummm Bill Chase was dead when this was recorded this is in the late seventies after 75 and he died in 74. He played lead in the 60's, probably not gonna find any things on youtube with him on lead tho.
Lyrical playing, musicianship, control, musicianship...the list goes on. Sure the argument can be made that there are better technicians, jazz soloists, etc. out there, but no one has ever been able to come close to Maynard at his "thing." And many have tried! He absolutely changed how the trumpet is played.
u embarasing ur self, u said musicianship twice. but i agree with u he is god and that ass chetedenim333 wants 2 talk shit he nedds to back that shit up.
actally when i sat down and talked to him i was at zanzibar blue and he said that he had corrective surgery to his jaw. because it was either play with the surgery or dont get it and never play again
Guys, while this is a decent version of Pagliacci, even with the low quality video, without Bobby Militello's 10 minute flute condenza it's still not the greatest. I was blessed to see Maynard many times in the 70's and got to see Pagliacci twice with Bobby and once after he left the band. Believe me, the solo MADE the piece, no matter how good Maynard was that night. Multiple standing ovations during the solo.
I agree...Militello's solo was out of sight. I think I heard that version "live" a few times. I really wish I could find a youtube version of that solo out here somewhere, it would be great to re-live that and hear it again.
Maynard will never die. I saw Maynard over ten times and I will do my part to keep him alive. It's crazy, he was one of thoes people that shold have lived forever, like Sinatra. You just can't let go of them.
Tommy, you are right Dude!!! Maynard and Sinatra....BOTH are "Monsters"!!!! Noone will ever come close....I saw Maynard 20+ times, and Sinatra the last concert in Chicago, IL.. I worship them both..I even took-up the horn because of him....(Just for my own enjoyment) Take Care dude.....
I first heard him live in Ft. Worth in '63. I was a mere lad. I heard he split his lip a few years after that, and maybe that's why he went to trombone for a while. Made the Playboy all stars on that instrument a number of years. An awesome talent he was.
Love the Maynard videos, this one included. There was only one Maynard, and now that he has passed I doubt we'll ever see another one. Same when Buddy Rich passed before him. We've never seen a drummer like him since. The Great Doc Severinsen is still with us, but he has retired from performing. Our links to the Big Band era are almost gone...
I don't mean to make anyone mad...but while MF's showmanship is great here (as usual), and yes, I still get goose bumps when he's revving up for the high notes...the musician in me cringes at a lot of his midrange stuff. Being a high-note artist doesn't mean you can't play cleanly and in tune in the staff.
Before I get ripped a new one, yes, I know this was a live concert, and he was a legend, and I could never approach what he did...I just wish he'd been able to sound good all around.
In a way you are right. But something happened to Maynard just about after MF Horn 2. if you listen or see any of the stuff before that he had control of the whole register. I think there's an element of burnout after that. Try not to judge him on later stuff. Cheers.
This isn't Knotsberry Farm, I'm 100% sure, and this isn't the concert from where the high note clip was taken, although he does hit the triple B in both. Might want to listen to it again.
This is NOT from Knottsberry Farm. In that concert Maynard is wearing a shiny gold shirt and plays flugel horn while moving around in the audience. This is from "Live at the Forum" in 1978. Don't question me - I am certain of this.
If you've ever heard the infamous "High A#$ note clip that circulates the internet, this is where the audio was taken from. Listen to that clip then listen to the audio on this video. He clearly nails the living hell out of that triple B on the audio, where as on this recording it sounds as if the audio equipment couldn't full capture it.
I disagree. The sound quality is awfully bad, and it certainly isn't his "greatest" performance of Pagliacci, but it's still Maynard -- the greatest trumpet player ever -- doing things few others could even dream of...

God wanted a little variety. Was thinking that Gabriel could use a day off. HE called on Maynard. I'm guessing that he's playing lead.

He at that point had them straightened from the way they were.
