Hi, I'm a photographer studying my diploma, i'm doing a piece of work on propaganda in the cold war used by the soviet union. having a lot of difficulty locating images and text i can understand to explain how the images were used as propaganda and what their effect had i am telling the story from the soviet unions side and what they used as propaganda...... if anyone knows of any information i might find useful that is in english i'd appreciate the help :) Thanks

I will support a somewhat different position that although he did have purges, these purges were necessary for the development of the Russian and Soviet industry and to promote education from a social standpoint, as Albert Einstein said in 1949. Under Stalin did the Soviets attain such achievements in education, sports, chess and culture, for it was he who promoted this.

Russia was far behind the rest of Europe, demonstrated by the Crimean war, WW1, Japan, etc. Russia was poor, an agrarian society, slowly developing, whilst the rest of Europe was moving ahead and developing at huge speeds. If Russia developed slowly, it would not have survived long as a nation.

It is not disputed, that these gains were accomplished at the cost of millions of lives. Official Soviet estimates stated the annual rate of growth at 13.9%; Russian and Western estimates gave lower figures of 5.8% and even 2.9%. One estimate is that Soviet growth became temporarily much higher after Stalin's death.
However, the reason for these purges, lies in the ideology of the "Communists" namely Lenin and Trotsky. These men wanted a "world revolution", that would see the development of Communism in highly industrialized states such as Germany, and see the elimination of the lower classes to make one, proletariat class. However, Stalin realized that this goal was impossible (demonstrated by the rapid repression of the Communist movement in Germany), and it did not make practical sense.
And as a result Russia would need to survive on her own, in a largely hostile world. And in order to survive, Russia need to be on par with the West, in terms of education, industry and economy. This if anything was the cause of the Great Purges, were after the solidification of power, Stalin was forced to eliminate the "world revolutionaries", for they did not care for Russia and would overthrow him, if his plans became to obvious, too early.
These purges lasted for many years and resulted in the elimination of the opposing party, that was dangerous to Stalin and his new direction, but this systematic repression opened new doors, allowing a sudden promotion in education, sports and culture. To continue with his scheme, Stalin introduced the first of the 5 year plans, plans which sought to rapidly improve Russian industry. He needed this industry as prior to his reforms, Russia was largely agrarian....
....and lacked any form of industrial base, with no machinery, know how, expertise or experts, and they did not have the ability to import many experts from foreign countries, laying the precedent for Soviet self sufficiency. Stalin also knew, or at least thought, that another war with the other Great Powers was inevitable and he wanted Russia prepared for it, and so forced the rapid training, development of infrastructure throughout the country.
It was this infrastructure that allowed the Soviets to take all their production, and move it past the Ural Mountains during World War 2. and restart from the beginning and outproduce Germany, and the Allies by the end of World War 2. Yes Stalin killed people (actually far fewer than is commonly thought), but this was necessary to turn an agrarian society, to an industrial powerhouse, over the course of 15 - 20 years.
And so I will end with the following question, is a dictatorship bad? Is a centrally planned economy, that is well managed, bad? Clearly not, for it can achieve far more faster, than a lassiez fair, market economy can.

This man killed many people, yes, there is no denying that. But to kill many people in a province just doesn't make sense. First of all, you are killing labour that could be used for industry, secondly you are destabilizing the region, and thirdly there is no need. There reason famine occurred, was because of a poor harvest season throughout the world, droughts in the Midwest (dustbowl), in Russia, Africa, etc.
And state mismanagement of crop and food distributions was what caused famine in Ukraine.

Note: An invasion is an attack of a country which retains its sovereignty and is independent. We cannot call any of the places you listed countries, per se. They were not, they were Soviet Satellites, provinces if you will. Therefore, it was not an invasion, it was merely protecting public order.

Read your history again. WWII lasted from September 1939 (German/Soviet invasion of Poland) to August 1945 (when Japan formally surrendered), for a total of just under six years. The United States entered the war in December 1941 - meaning that the United States was involved for well over half of the war. It wasn't "pretty much over". The United States fought a lot of decisive battles, especially in the Pacific sector.

I will support a somewhat different position that although he did have purges, these purges were necessary for the development of the Russian and Soviet industry and to promote education from a social standpoint, as Albert Einstein said in 1949. Under Stalin did the Soviets attain such achievements in education, sports, chess and culture, for it was he who promoted this.

Russia was far behind the rest of Europe, demonstrated by the Crimean war, WW1, Japan, etc. Russia was poor, an agrarian society, slowly developing, whilst the rest of Europe was moving ahead and developing at huge speeds. If Russia developed slowly, it would not have survived long as a nation.
You seem to have conveniently missed my early posts, where I described Stalin's policy, and reasons for rapid industrialization. I am not a supporter of Stalin, I am against Ignorance.

And as a result Russia would need to survive on her own, in a largely hostile world. And in order to survive, Russia need to be on par with the West, in terms of education, industry and economy. This if anything was the cause of the Great Purges, were after the solidification of power, Stalin was forced to eliminate the "world revolutionaries", for they did not care for Russia and would overthrow him, if his plans became to obvious, too early.

To continue with his scheme, Stalin introduced the first of the 5 year plans, plans which sought to rapidly improve Russian industry. He needed this industry as prior to his reforms, Russia was largely agrarian....

....and lacked any form of industrial base, with no machinery, know how, expertise or experts, and they did not have the ability to import many experts from foreign countries, laying the precedent for Soviet self sufficiency. Stalin also knew, or at least thought, that another war with the other Great Powers was inevitable and he wanted Russia prepared for it, and so forced the rapid training, development of infrastructure throughout the country.

It was this infrastructure that allowed the Soviets to take all their production, and move it past the Ural Mountains during World War 2. and restart from the beginning and outproduce Germany, and the Allies by the end of World War 2. Yes Stalin killed people (actually far fewer than is commonly thought), but this was necessary to turn an agrarian society, to an industrial powerhouse, over the course of 15 - 20 years.

AHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You cannot imagine how ignorant that is. There was corruption, yes, within the Soviet political parties, but saying that the people were "poor" is an overstatement. They had everything, a job, a home, free education, free healthcare, free tickets to go on vacation anywhere within the Soviet Union, and sometimes even outside its borders.

With the taxes they collect from the people so it is always the people who pay for it because nothing is free.I visited the Soviet Union many times and what you say is pure b.s. people needed visas just to go to another part of the country and there were even stores Berioskas where most soviet citizens were not even allowed. Only for foreigners

People of all races and nationalities were tolerated, women had equal opportunities as men since the advent of the Soviet Union, and your life there as a blackman would have been very good, as you would not have suffered discrimination...

Note: An invasion is an attack of a country which retains its sovereignty and is independent. We cannot call any of the places you listed countries, per se. They were not, they were Soviet Satellites, provinces if you will. Therefore, it was not an invasion, it was merely protecting public order.

URSS send trops to Afghanistan at their gorvernament request to fight the rebels, and yes it was war, every armed conflict its war and it doens't matter on who's request...

Czechoslovakia: Czechoslovakia wasn´t just invaded by URSS it was by all the Varsaw pact members and it had the purpose of stoping the "Prague Spring" and fortify the communist party of Czechoslovakia, wich you can compare to what the U.N will do to Lybia right now if it gets that far, they will invad it to serve a pupose

Read your history again. WWII lasted from September 1939 (German/Soviet invasion of Poland) to August 1945 (when Japan formally surrendered), for a total of just under six years. The United States entered the war in December 1941 - meaning that the United States was involved for well over half of the war. It wasn't "pretty much over". The United States fought a lot of decisive battles, especially in the Pacific sector.

@EuphrasieF yes the US entered WWII in 1941, but when did the US actively enter the battle in europe? the battles in the pacific sector were around that time and it took the US quite a while to get started in europe (after the soviets have taken over control and they already rolled over german territory, is that a coinsidence?!). thats exactly what i was trying to point out, although germany declared war on the US in '42 they didnt interfere until it was clear what the outcome was going to be
