3 Wats of RF power was the advantage of using these phones. Now days you get about a quarter watt if you are lucky and the towers do the rest of the work.
These large mobile phones may look like junk compared to today's small iPhones but they were more dependable back then even compared to today's phones. My grandma used to have one and she lived off a dirt road that led deep into the forest. They worked great even in that terrain.
@14Greekboy14 Hey gayboy you stupid faggot stop cursing God, and stop pretending you somehow pretending modenr technology makes you superior in any fashion because 20 years ago things were different what alsoer you are
3 Watts!! That's fucking nuts, that kind of power could fry your brain. I'm glad we have a lot more sites now so we don't need to slow fry our brains while making calls and become a vegetable by 40 years old.
@elmalacopa you can move it around retard portable radios are big and you can move them around they aren't fixed just because you are a dumb pussy and can't lift 3 pounds and walk around yes makes you an ignorant faggot now go kill yourself
Yeah, whats the trade off twenty one years later? Well, back then the only thing distracting to a driver might have been his girlfriend giving him head! Today, he can surf the net, watch porn on Xtube, all on the phone while driving! Every time something comes along to make life more convenient, it winds up becoming a nuisance. Now you see "I drones" walking around holding there I-Phones gazing at them like they had some sort of magical powers, almost hypnotized by them, what a society!
Quality-made GE Cell Phone from 1989... laugh all you want about how much of a dinosaur this is... 21 years from now tell me you can't say the same thing about today's iPhone.
Cell phone manufacturers need to focus on the signal strength of phones and voice quality. I have no need for txt messaging or internet capability. What I want is a phone, not a tiny computer in my pocket!
In LW I don't think that was a cell phone, could have been a radio phone, the had those way before cells. But ya, it's insane to think a phone in thx 80s wad bigger than a VCR in the 80s
Oh and typing on an itouch ranks up there with driving into a pile of mule dung, thank you
Hey Zoomer, a little bit of information, Cellular or mobile phones have been around for many years, they like the internet were only used by the military!
You wanna see something funny....check out "Wall Street"..('87 or 88)...theres scenes where either Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas' character) or Charlie Sheen's character are seen in their car or walking around with one of the "hip" monster sized cellphones of the day..this was HIP back then, especially in '87....also in "Lethal Weapon"...Danny Glovers "portable" cell phone in the car (with the enormous back-pack like charger in the car trunk!)....those were the days!
$397 INCLUDING antenna ?!! You have GOT to be kidding me....I'll take THREE!...(by the way, 'Also Sprach Zarathrusta' playing in the backround...like this was the event of the last 100 years!!)
yeah bro laughed as much as you did when i first saw this commercial but if you could travel back to 1989 you would think this cell phone would be the latest in electronics
i mean look at what were probably gonna think about the first-generation iphone in 2027
Cell phones in 1989 when they were first announced already had been adjustable, and already had redials like now, and since then probably more things have been added to cellular phones.
Looking at this shows that we have progressed quite a lot in 19 years. Now mobile phones have 5 megapixel cameras, plays games, have GPS and plays music. They do cost about the same though.
I love General Electric, because there's such a wide range of quality in their products. I mean, they make nuclear reactor parts, some of the most highly engineered and expensive products in the world, and they also make the shittiest and cheapest TV's you can buy. I used to sell them, and one started on fire on the sales floor one day. Let us hope that doesn't happen with one of our nuclear reactors.
After 18 years of electronic technology progression you gotta just sit back and laugh... wow $397 - only the thinnest and most high-quality camera phones would cost that much now. And adjusting for inflation and that would be like $520 today. Lightweight? Wow are you serious... like anyone today would have a problem carrying cell phones on them? Last number redial... wow how much times have changed now that we have like last 300 number redials on phones today.

If these phones would still work, they would be great for those dead zones, cause they have a much more powerful antenna than a blackberry.
