F-16 It's the best thing American built that flies . . . . . . .It's a piece of awesomeness. Beautiful looking, highly versatile and relatively cheap.

Sophisticated ground SAM will probably reduce this beauty effectiveness but most small air forces are concerned primarily with defending their OWN airspace. So it's not a big deal. In that role this one engine awesomeness still has plenty to offer. And it can fly low to avoid sophisticated SAM network if needed. It has a killer look too.

@jester26uk Indeed F-16 has only a single engine. It is cheaper to operate and maintain.

The capability is just amazing. very versatile aircraft. If a nation is only concerned about primarily defending their own airspace then it is a good aircraft to have.

I saw a formation of Flankers couple weeks back too, practising for a ceremonial overpass. It was an awesome sight to see too :)

I believe the F16, in my opinion, is still the undisputed in terms of reliability, of all US fighter planes. I think I remember it right that this is also the most cost-effective to maintain?

@skateboy159 Well, later or soon better jets will be created like the F35 JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) and that plane is a stealth bomber/fighter in all. So, too bad this beautiful plane get replaced by the F35. :(

I've participated in a lot of joint exercises with PACAF or NATO and I can tell you first hand no country has "the best" pilots--although as American pilots we had a definite edge: they are our airplanes, we designed them, had access to advances in technology, and have (Red Flag) the best air combat training support system on the planet

the Israelis proved the F-16s dominance of balance in the 80s. they killed more than 40 enemy jets with them, and none of the F-16s were on air superiority missions, they simply could not scramble the F-15 escort fast enough to get those Mig 21s and Mig 23s... and Mig 23s were quite on par back in the 80s.

and while operation cast lead is controvercial, from a strike capability of the F-16 its impossible not to be shocked at how much endurance the F-16 can take.

The Swedish JAS-39 Gripen has had problems with their fly-by-wire computer system. Both at air shows, the computers failed and the planes literally went into a cobra maneuver from hell and proceed to fall out of the sky.

Thanks for sharing that. I guess that's the disadvantage of being too dependent on computer to fly a plane. Though the advantages probably outweighs the disadvantages.

F-16 imo is one incredible plane. It could perform dual roles, air and ground without having to compromise on the other. Once the bombs are unloaded it becomes a very nimble fighter. And it's much cheaper as well both to operate and to buy.

I bet the F-16 could out turn the F-15 which is an air superiority specialty fighter.

If you're referring to the Ukrainian airshow disaster, both pilots were convicted and sentenced to prison, because they flew over the flight line, and performed maneuvers they were unauthorized to do.

i would have shot them. the meer fact that they ejected,befor killing 80 ppl is a good enough reason. even if they could not have saved them. at least they would have tried,and died as "heroes".

from where i am now, i would stay in. but then i couldnt know, as im not a pilot. and have never been in that situation.

But a real fighterpilot should get the plane out of harms way, even if it kills him.
