  • So why is Honda the only car company offering CNG cars in the U.S.? It really wouldn't cost much to add this as an engine option. There are about 8 million production cars worldwide that run on Natural Gas; it's only a new concept in America (we're so backward!).

  • here in argentina a lot of cars work with natural gas, i think a 30%, its very cheap and clean for the enviroment, but still a non renovable fuel. Sorry for my english

  • @Pentium3ddem Let's not worry about renewing this fuel; the U.S. has a 200 year supply and we could use the export business. By then we'll be making electricity from hydrogen fusion, so the limited supply will take care of itself.

  • I have one of these cars that I bought at a local lot. It used to belong to the EPA office in Utah.

I fill up for between $7-$9 a time depending how cold it is. It goes 140 mi. for that price. The disadvantage is finding the stuff. A new station is going up here, but not till May. Until then, I'll just use the liquid like everyone else and bide my time.

  • "We're not gunna pay the oil companies anymore!"

Who do you think drills and produces the natural gas you are using to fuel your car? I'll give you a hint... natural gas is found in the exact same places as oil.

Just saying. CNG is definitely the wave of the future though. Thumbs up

  • I found a website that claims natural gas has an octane level of 130. Plus your oil doesn't break down as fast.

  • AWESOME!!!

I hardly EVER find a news story on here from Indy.

  • How about performance? That's what driving is all about. If you just want to putt around take the bus or buy a scooter or scooter chair. ;)

  • Is natural gas even natural?

  • @heartlessvietboy some gasoline is used to mine natural gas, but it woulhd cost way more to use solar, wind or hydrogen to extract natrual gas.

  • So, it's cheaper to fill-up, It's greener than any other vehicle and there is no need for foreign gas ! So, what if it doesn't go as fast, they keep lowering the speed lmt. anyway !

Time to re-design our autos to make sense !

This is an opportunity to create new US jobs !

The Gas stations will have to retool for natural gas !

In many other countries they have their cars custom fitted to

take natural gas tanks at a cost of about a thousand dollars !

Let's think on the positives !

  • @luchpockets We would only have enough to power for 200 years..not to meantion the spike in natural gas after everyone starts using it, then we run out all the steal we wasted making those cars.. Electric and compressed air/electric hybrid would be the best way to go.

  • @unholynationmorons

You do realize that 200 years is about twice as long as we have been slaves to the oil barons and we aren't even talking about all the cost of the pollution that gasoline and oil has created.

Let's face it we need to start using both natural gas and electric, and wean the country off of gasoline, while we continue to search for a better power or fuel source !

These electric batteries are still a bit suspect but are still a better alternative to gasoline.

  • @luchpockets Natural gas heats homes, now imagen price spiking up like crazy withen 20 years due to supply being zapped out. Now imagen what will happen to everyone. Electricty is different from gas in that we can always make it with wind turbines and solar pannels and nuclear plants. Vegitable oil can also be massed prodeuced so that would be another good fuel to pick from. Compressed air cars also work fine.

  • Compressed gas is safe there is a pressure relief valve gas is light so it goes up. Petrol pours onto you or the street and sets everything on fire!

  • I've lived in Brazil off/on since 2004. I have noticed recently more & more cars at filling stations in Brazil getting filled with Nat. Gas.!! Brazilians love this because it's cheaper per liter than petrol.

I just watched a big "B.S." interview on CNBC. Some "expert" was saying it's too expensive to convert gas stations over to Nat.Gas Stations!

Listen!,....next month I'll be back down in Brazil. Shall I ask the Brazilians how they did it within "budget"?

  • BKK calling!

  • wow, this guy takes 8 HOURS to get his CNG car refueled???? C'mon, in Brazil we take about 2 MINUTES to do it.... in any common gas station!!!

  • A gas station is commercialized where they use high pressure. A home refueling station is extremely low pressure so it takes time for it to build up enough pressure. HUGE difference. Commercialized CNG is around 3000-3600 PSI and residential CNG is at 5-50PSI.

  • @fdief it has to do with line pressures. Main CNG fuel stations come off a line of 1600psi +

At home, the supply lines are reduced to <2psi, so the compressor takes quite long to fill. This only applies to filling at HOME.

  • Compressor strength man. Your gas station probably has an industrial compressor, that thing is in an old man's garage.

  • This is my question there are plently of CNG refueling stations in Utah but lets say for some weird reason I run out. Could I put Proprane in my car to get me back to a CNG station.

  • I'm also in Utah, and the answer to your question is NO. At least without modification. 1. The natural gas you fill up with is gaseous not liquid. Propane vehicles are filled with liquid propane. 2. Most CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG [(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) aka Propane] vehicles both have a "Compuvalve" which is specific to which fuel it was design for. 3. The filler nozzle is totally different. SO.... ....just don't run out! :) I'll see you at the filling station.

  • @vampov legally you cant mix fuels. practically, you maybe could but propane runs 23.5:1 air fuel ratio, and CNG is only 10:1, may be some operating issues

  • cng is so much cleaner than everything else and with the shale find in the usa we are good to go for the next 118 years. Why not look into this further so we can save money and keep it domestic?

  • We can also make biogas out of our own poo, but sadly my dad (who used to work for city government) said nat gas has no performance.

  • honda pulled the pin on this, you cant get it any more. they are basterds.

  • Fuck honda

  • Who wants to get blown up in a CNG wreck when you can get a soothing bath of flammable gasoline instead. Decades of action movies clearly demonstrate that cars fueled by gasoline explode too.

  • Just used diesel.

  • one crash and KABOOM!!! its more dangerous than regular gasoline.

  • Actually research show'd that it's more likley too go kaboom as you put it in a regular petrol driven car than a ng car, because the gas is very light so it will just float into the atmosphere indstead of frying you like kfc.

  • mmmmmmmm chicken

  • There is the danger of the car having a leak, and ignition, forming little buriner. So the fuel line shouldn't be under the passengers.

  • Gas has fumes too.

  • Pakistan is on the forefront of CNG use. Same for Argentina. We don't have many CNG stations in the U.S.;however, almost every home here has a natural gas supply line. Home fueling has tremendous potential here. I recently did a bi-fuel CNG conversion on my Toyota. It cost over $5000 U.S. What does a CNG conversion cost in Pakistan? I like being able to choose between Petrol and CNG. In some parts of the U.S. , CNG costs under $1 per gallon.

  • My car is bi-fueled with petrol and CNG. There are CNG stations everywhere in my country. There are more stations that offer CNG than those that offer Gasoline or Petrol.

Another benefit I have is that I can fill up my CNG cylinder and the petrol tank up to the top and not worry about refilling up to 350 miles.

  • My CNG Cylinder is filled to top for $4.8 US and is good to go for up to 200 Kilometers (124 miles).

  • By the year 2050 most gas stations may offer you these options: * Electrical energy * Hydrogen * Methane (synonymous with CNG) * Propane (synonymous with LPG) * Ethanol * Regular Gasoline * Midgrade Gasoline * Premium Gasoline * Diesel Most cars may also be bi-fuel, tri-fuel, etc... so drivers will have their options.
  • CNG is the way to go. American fuel, cheaper. The government needs to allow access to there filling stations, they have been using these as fleet cars for a long time.

  • I wouldn't bother with this unless I had a hook up at a gas company where i could get free fill ups!

  • Its it possible to also use propane instead of natural gas without any further modifications? Because we have buses in our area that run on propane, not natural gas.

  • oh ya there is a ton of kits on the internet to run your car on propane for around 300bucks and most truck stops have propane its super easy easier than natural gas

  • Big deal. Politicians have been running in this for centuries.

  • I wonder what tricks a car engineered for CNG will have.

  • Regerative braking with no batteries is possible by using the engine to compressing air into a tank. Then run the car on compressed air.

  • CNG vehicles may also combust hydrogen or operate entirely without combustion by using compressed air.

  • By filling up with a combustible compressed gas you get two energy sources. Two energy sources out of one fuel. There is the combustible gas. There is the high preasure gas. The vehicle engine is computer controlled with electronic valves allowing it to operate as a combustion engine, compress gas(air) engine, and air compressor for regerative braking.

  • For long distance trips the dual fuel use gets you way down the road. If your just running short trips around town then using only compress air gets you enough miles per fill-up.

  • Horsepower is not a major concern for most.

How much does it cost to fill a car, and how far will that take you? I guess instead of "miles per gallon" we need to talk "miles per dollar". The price of nat. gas has gone up tremendously over the years, there have been shortages, etc. so I wonder how fueling our cars with it would make heating your home and cooking with it even more expensive.

  • I see people talking about LPG and CNG as if they are the same. they are not. LPG is a refined product of Crude oil. Natural gas however is a gas siphoned off deposits f decay... same may be oil bearing some may not.

For Propane you still need the oil feedstock...in the USA 70% is foreign imported... whereas natural gas has a lot of domestic sources.

  • LPG actually has more energy per volume than nat. gas- more BTU's. It should be added.

  • americans assholes in dominican republic every body use natural gas as car fuel and is a 3 th world country ?ahhh? asssholes and you can fill up your tank anywhere

  • well the dominican republic is full of ignorant idiots like you, and it sucks and stinks.... and the dominican republic really is a third world country. a couple of people in the u.s use natural gas as fuel, and you fucking idiot says its a third world country? wow. you are just dumb and stupid.

  • nobody is an idiot or an asshole because of their nationality. that idea comes just from stereotypes and intolerance, which you both end up using unnecessarily.

  • I have an 8.1 liter Chevy 2500 and it would be kinda cool to convert it (to save money), but my truck has 330 hp and 425 ft-lbs of torque, does natural gas cause a reduction in power (because I need the power)?

  • Not that I don't understand or appreciate the benefits of higher horsepower, but if you use your truck for heavy hauling, you probably would have been better served with a Diesel.

Even at a $1 more per gallon (vs. $4 per gasoline), you would have saved money with the slightly higher mileage (especially when hauling loads).

HOWEVER, it would have taken a while to offset the cost of the Diesel...

  • Yes, if the engine is not adjusted to fit the higher octane Natural Gas your engine will get less torque and less hp.. But not very much.. Why do you need that MONSTER car for? Buy a small one and save the nature! :) 8.1 litre? You could run 4 normal cars on your gasoline bill i guess .. lol ;)

  • I sold my chevy and bought a 5.9L 6 cylinder dodge ram diesel. I get 18 city and 22 hwy going 70....plus it can tow more. My 8.1 liter chevy got 9 city and 12 hwy.

  • not enough to notice and u can get kits that run both at the same time to have power and mpg

  • Or you can try propane.

  • This is true. I used to drive a HUGE dump truck that ran on propane. This was 30 years ago. I imagine that the price is a lot higher than natural gas, though. You have to pay the lower price for a long time before you could recoup the cost of the compressor ($10,000 if I remember correctly).Propane is also widely available throughout the country, too.

  • My dodge ram van is a hybrid; propane or gasoline. It's great I only pay 24 dollars for a full tank, and it costs me 60 dollars for gasoline.

  • Was it made that way or converted? You have two separate tanks? How does the mileage compare?

  • It was converted. Yeah I have 2 seperate tanks.

The gasoline gets more mileage but just by a few miles. I'd rather use propane because it's cheaper and cleaner and my engine will last longer.

It failed the EPA emissions test so I drive it illegally. Ssshh Don't tell anyone. xD

  • Natural Gas is better. Way cleaner and it passes emissions tests by a long shot. Plus you can refuel at home.

  • Well, to be fair, you can refuel propane vehicles at home too.

If you live in a part of the country that relies on propane for heating (like the country), then you probably have a propane tank in your back yard.

You can connect a hose to that tank and as long as it has liquid propane in it, you can refuel your empty propane tank in your car/truck.

I did this for years with my 1989 GMC Sierra pickup until propane got to expensive to make it economical.

  • Propane truck you are referring to is called LPG in europe.. Liquid Petrolium Gas.. Its the same gas you use to power your BBQ grill with :)

  • thing is both fuel gas are way more affordable then oil base fuel my gramdparent

heat thare house with oil and we heat ours with natrual gas we pay way less

more heating our house with gas thin what thay do heating with oil

  • @Charles2337 propane is a bit more expensive, and it puts a lot more strain on the valves and rockers, because propane burns at a hotter temperature, so unless the engine is designed for propane it is harder on the gas engine, where as cng is easier on the engine, and burns clean enough to change your oil every 7000 miles instead of 3000

  • @Charles2337 And propane accessories

  • Commercial pumps can do it in a couple of minutes.

  • cool
