Val quit the show because she felt the role of Bea Smith was repetetive and no longer challenging. She didn't like the way one of the new producers was trying to glam up the series,and it did not work and they asked her back three times.Also Anne Phelan who played Myra 'desperate'Desmond, wanted a pay rise,Grundy's said no,Annie resigned, Val was asked back again and said no because she supported Annie and it was to cause trouble between them. So the Producers out of spite killed them both off.
I have read in several places that Val Lehman despised Elspeth Ballantyne (Meg Jackson/Morris) but I have never read anything that suggested that they were less than professional on-set.
This clip just goes to show that Val Lehman and Collette Mann could still credibly play their PCBH characters. Why don't Grundy's or whatever they are called nowadays seriously consider bringing the series back? Neighbours is dire nowadays and could easily be replaced by a reinstated PCBH.

From what I have read, the network wrote Bea out "permanently" in this way so that the fans would stop bugging them to bring her back, as she had no desire to revisit the series. I tried to find the exact air date for this episode but couldn't. Given the timeframe of the series, I would say that 1985 is more plausible than 1986.
