  • Africas sold their own people into slavery. They are the ones who caught the slaves for the buyers and offered them for sale.

Does that make Africans (negroids) racist against their own kind? Of Course not. The term "Racist" has been way over used. Happy smoking.

  • I call it Oom Paul because, despite him being a dick, I am distantly related to him.

  • It took me a minute to ralize that Oom Paul refered to "Oom" Paulus Kruegerus. Haha. Not sure if he was really as bad as you think. English were just as racist as the Afrikaners

  • It took me a minute to ralize that Oom Paul refered to "Oom" Paulus Kruegerus. Haha. Not sure if he was really as bad as you think

  • Very interesting, as a Hungarian, it's great knowing that some pipe makers choose to call the Oom Paul a Hungarian. I also didn't know he had such a dark history. Thanks, Marc.

This is what I love about your channel, not only are you very knowledgeable when it comes to pipes and tobaccos(helped me a great deal when I first got into pip smoking), but you've got so many videos I always manage to stumble across one I haven't seen yet.

  • I told you all this stuff in a response decades ago.

The shape of the pipe is older than Paul Kruger. Kruger smoked one, and so it began to be called after him, when he became notorious at the time of the Boer War (1902). In France it has always been called an "Hongroise", probably because it was popular among Hungarian regiments French soldiers met up with in the Napoleonic wars.

Soldiering always has a lot to do with pipes.

  • The zulu and the Lovat (after general Lord Lovat-Frazer) were also pipes that became popular and received their names at the time of the Boer War, the first major European war after the invention of the briar pipe.

Up to the time of the Crimean war (1855) most soldiers smoked plain clays, except for German and Austro-Hungarian regimental pipes made out of porcelain or olivewood ("Ulmer" pipes.)

  • look at the pic of oom paul on wikipedia....the just looks evil.

  • What is your Skype name?

  • Paul Kruger wasn't that bad. Gandhi was a right prick... Stupid ass, got his people to starve...

  • I dig the Oom Paul shape, and name for that matter, so I'm sticking with the classic. However, I wouldn't smoke a pipe called the Adolf Hitler shape. If Oom Paul was bit more prolific I would have a hard time with that. Great video and info.

    Keep on smokin',

    -Josh

  • @joshskorton if it was a really cool shape i would smoke the adolf hitler. i dont think the name of a shape is nearly as important as to how it feels and the enjoyment it brings the smoker. its like calling french fries freedom fries. no mater what you call it it is the same thing. so just call it what it is.

  • I did not know that. I've always called them Hungarians though...stil do ;) Another great topic from you

  • lets call'em dirty bastards

    G

  • What's funny is that in Khmer Oom also means uncle. But I always assumed that tobacco had its roots in slavery also, not just of blacks but also indigenous populations in early America.

  • Actuly it was the british what were infamous back then for the way they treated the poor boer farmers. they were herded into consentration camps and starved to death..kruger was realy not so bad

  • I've got no problem blotting out a name...although sometimes I think ignorance is just as effective. Nobody cares that Thor's Day doesn't belong to Thor anymore, because nobody thinks about the word Thursday. Still, once the knowledge is out, there's no putting it back...every time I see Oom Paul I'll think of this...so I guess I'm moving to Hungarian!

  • Pretty sure that's the best stem on any pipe you can get. Did you enjoy that cigar? I just picked up a couple La Flor's yesterday just seeing what people were commenting about that brand on your video.

  • It was great!

  • hahaha, ik ben in Hungarije nu, in Boedapest

  • no problem my friend...glad i could help...have a great day!

  • I'm sticking with oom paul infamous or not its named after him for a reason and I'm gonna stick with that i don't think there's any reason no matter how good or bad he was to now decided to change it

  • Oom Paul rolls off the tongue easier than Hungarian. Oom Paul it is.

    Mason

  • I think that Dunhill and some other English makers called Oom Paul pipes Hungarians not because of his politics or bad character but because of the Second Boer War fort between the UK and South African Republic.. So i don't think it was done for goods but because he'd been an enemy of the British Empire in Africa. But i do think Hungarian is a much better name..

  • That is fascinating!

  • Much of South African history is sad. Jan Van Riebeeck all the way up to Verwoerd. Most of the Boers were complete bastards. Also, unrelated I know, but can you speak Afrikaans since the language is so similar to Dutch?

  • yes I can understand it quite well and sort of speak it, it is 17th century Dutch with a lot of naval terms

  • Has learning about the dark history of Oom Paul affected your opinion about the pipe shape?

    - Joe

  • No, I don't blame the shape for what happened :-)

  • I am glad that I have never really enjoyed those pipes~ The history is indeed strange.

    Ruben~

  • Do you ever smoke cannibis in your pipes?

  • No, I have no moral issues with it, but dislike the side effects such as altered state of mind

  • imma go ahead and answer that for you no he doesnt smoke cannabis he smokes tobacco I believe billy bud by cornell & diehl in this video

  • to each and every time and place a dectator of its own i will not go into tht, however if Oom paul have came up with such magnificent design then the man do posses a great taste

    cheers

    ahmad

  • Pipefriend, I believe it was Alfred Dunhill who named the shape "Hungarian" because he found the other name not PC. What was the Hungarian significance to the English?

  • They remind me of a pipe that would be smoked by Grandpa in the movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, so I refer to them as such. lol Chitty Chitty Bang Bang pipes

I also refer to Churchwardens as Back-scratchers at times too. :-)

  • Full Bent

  • I couldn't find the info on OomPaul about Oom Paul.

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams my bad. I added the link to the video description

  • @PipeFriendCHS Thanks Marc!

  • how come you don't smoke an Oom Paul (or Hungarian) pipe in this video?

  • @CaptainKhrenov Didn't think of that! Next time :-)

  • Very good song!! Glad you like it!! Maybe you could use it in the background of your next video!!

  • Thats interesting. Ive been to South Africa its a very interesting place.

  • So, that's where Freddy Krueger comes from!

Being Hungarian myself, I'm a little partial to the name Hungarian! I agree with you and can see why Dunhill would use another name for that shape. I will have to research the Hungarian aspect of this myself now.

Thanks for this thought provoking topic.

    Francis
