  • When I try this, I have troubles getting my hand out the handcuff. Any tips??

  • @Wiegieboard that's what I messed up in the video, too. It helps to have slack in the rope beneath the immobile hand as you go through all the motions. It also helped me a bit to have the handcuff up a bit closer to the elbow, in the muscular part of the arm.

  • @colandline Excellent thank you very much for the advice. I'll give it some work tonight and see if I can get it pretty smooth.

  • To everyone commenting that you don't want to tie this around your abdomen... it depends on the situation. Most people, when they need a rope, aren't about to be hoisted vertically up a cliff or into a helicopter (which would already be using special equipment anyway). Rather, they're on a steep incline and can't get up without assistance. The bowline around the torso is to let rescuers assist them up the incline, rather than haul them up.

  • @inter10per Thanks for the comment. Each situation is unique, of course. Once you learn the skill, you can adjust accordingly.

  • Hey this works great!! I was on a boat for two weeks and needed to know

this. I finally figured out how to tie one (with instructions) but I like this.

I don't agree with some of the comments. He uses two hand, instead of

throwing the rope over a branch or something. Good video, thanks. Helped a lot.

  • Some people really do spout some crap! Exellent vid and a real lifesaver!

  • Thanks, this could save your life

  • Brilliant. I think that could be really useful in some circumstances. Yes ideally a double loop, or treble loop bowline would be more comfortable in the long run, but this is excellent for a quick way of tying onto a rescue rope. I shall certainly be teaching my sailor sister's family. It's just as easy with eyes closed as well! Thanks

  • poor way of doing it u ended up with your hand in a loop if u were in the water and u had to do that your asking for trouble..bit of wrist snapping goin on there if the fast end was pulled unespected intead try putting a loop into the "dead end"and then u can feed the free end up the hole round the "dead"part of the rope and then back down the hole then if you do it like that u will never need to tie the rope round your self you can do it in front of your self and then feed it over your self

  • lawl u used 2 hands on a ONE handed bowline.....

  • @senokot89 Yep, as has been pointed out by several others. Send a response video with it tied correctly.

  • @senokot89 Pay attention; he only used one hand to tie the knot. The other just supported the rope for the demo.

  • well done , thanks much for this video.

  • my e-prep counseler does it in like two seconds

  • @aceofspaids98 fantastic, E-prep...sounds survivalism related...am I right?

  • @knifecollector93 sortive,

  • you still using the other hand tie man

  • @snipeice Yep, and you're still not reading the thread before commenting.

  • @snipeice he was demonstrating that the one in his left was the one that would be thrown down to you .

  • Never tie a bowline around the abdomen or chest to be rescued. You will wind up swinging suspended with the line under your armpits. You will be asphyxiated before your reach the top. Instead, tie a loop with a bowline at the working end and step into the loop with your foot. Then let them pull you up.

  • @jrschomburg Good advice.

  • @jrschomburg I don't understand why you would say this. It seems to me that there wouldn't be any pressure on your chest or neck. The under-armpit scenario is what the Coast Guard uses when they hoist people into a helicopter. The bowline doesn't tighten, unlike a round turn and two half hitches. Can you clarify?

  • @jrschomburg Or tie a bowline on a bight and sit in it comfortably as the rescuers pull you up.

  • @jrschomburg not true yes the bowling will ride up under your arm pits but u will not become asphxiated because this knot dose not slip so still be abile to breath because there is no pressure on your chest from it dont want to sound an ass or anythin i was just saying

  • @rednissan001 ...where do I begin?

The fixed knot (if not done properly) wil lslip over the shoulders, resulting in one of two things- a boo-boo or a nice long drop with a side of oh shit.

I'll use a self adjusting anyday of the week and twice on sunday if it gets my dumb ass out of the situation.

Unless I've got time. THEN I'll use the swiss seat, alpine butterfly, ETC.

  • @knifecollector93 Do you have video of how to make the self-adjusting, swiss seat and alpine butterfly? You could show a better way.

  • If you can't tie a one handed bowline in under 3 seconds without using your left hand you're doing pushups in Dive School

  • I love that. Wish I could do it that fast. I'm working on the flying bowline -- saw it in another video. Pretty cool. A couple of my boys and I are getting better at it. It's the 1-second bowline.

  • great tuturial video , do I have your premission to translate this video and make an explenation in my language ?

any way , streanghten and get braver (in free translation from the hebrew scout greting) and Be Prepared my Scout brother :]

  • You are free to translate to your language. Good luck.

  • its called the around the waist bowline if you are a scout like me and in ROTC you should know this knot it is very easy strong and useful

  • Good demo but you can't call it one handed when you use both hands.

  • can i just be a little picky and say he used 2 hands!

  • Absolutely! The trick to the one-handed flavor is to keep the "handcuff" loose, which I neglected to do. Good eye.

  • @colandline FYI, the only way to do that (to keep it loose) is to take tension off the "static" part of the line with the other hand. Then, you can flip the bitter end around, capture it, and pull out your hand.

  • @amswal if you werent listening, if this was in a real situation, he would have to use 1 end of the rope.

  • He does step one too fast. I cant get that part.

  • correction, I mean step 2

  • Good tutorial - step by step and clear instructions work for me. Thanks!

  • Thank you so much I have a test tommorw and this is just what i nedded you should make more videos like this it really helps THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! LOL!!!

  • What kind of class are you taking that is giving you a test on the Bowline?

  • he is giving us a test on all types like i really need help on trace 8 and the saftey knot so yah!!!

  • thank you

it helped for a fire scout thing

  • you are wrong because you need to adjust the knot in the last part

  • Yes, I know. If I had kept the wrist loop loose, it would have worked as a one-handed knot. I was nervous filming it -- I've never done an instructional video before. Just keep the wrist loop loose, and you won't need to adjust.

  • if you loop it around your wrist looser you can actually do it with 1 hand. some of my scouts can only tie a bowline this way...lol

  • Yep. I got nervous filming it, and managed to snug the loop over my wrist every time. My 8-year-old daughter is getting pretty proficient at it, tho. I've been working on the flying bowline too. That one's more showy.

  • Nice video

  • Thanks -- hope it's useful...
